Sewing Machine Has arrived

sewing machine - My new "Janome Mini Sew" sewing machine, sorry it's dark forgot the flash was off.

My new sewing machine has just arrived it's a "Janome Mini Sew" and it only cost me £20 new on good old eBay (not including delivery). It's really light I can lift it with one hand and has all the stitches I'll ever need. I bought it because I collect Sindy dolls to restore and wanted to start making clothes for them as I have some patterns I also got on eBay, my old Singer sewing machine needs servicing the bobbin winder doesn't work any more so I needed something new. Does anyone else use a sewing machine regularly? It's so easy once you get the hang of it and you can make so many things for your home and to wear.

Ebay is a great place to get sewing stuff. Yes, I have been an active sewer since I was about 14. A few years ago I bought myself a very special treat, a Brother Innovis 2500D sewing and machine embroidery machine and software to "translate" my own drawings and paintings to machine embroidery patterns. The last thing I made was just yesterday, a new curtain for the spare bedroom. It looks so nice and I got the fabric from WalMart's $1/yd sale bin. So many WalMarts do not have the yard goods any more, but now we live near one that still does, at least for a while yet.

My friend was asking about embroidery machines and she is an artist so she will be thrilled to hear she can turn her paintings into patterns for one, what is the software called by the way?

Digitizing your own designs is very expensive and very confusing and also quite frustration. Since I have a Brother machine, I use their PE Design software. I was fortunate enough to secure a copy bundled with the machine I bought from a store that was going out of business. But then I had to buy a program called Pre-Design, too, in order to clean up the lines in my JPEG files before they go through PE Design. Now the biggest problem for me is that you cannot run the PE Design software without a thing they call a "dongle" and as I travel a lot, I'd have to carry the dongle around with me, which is ridiculous, or buy several which is absolutely cost-prohibitive. They do this on purpose. It is infuriating. There are other brands of digitizing software for home machine embroidery design, but the main thing is to be sure they are compatible with whatever machine is going to be used. Once all the pieces fit together and the learning curve is established, then you can get beautiful results, but making one's own images is not for the faint of heart. It takes a real commitment in time and money and what I call moral fortitude

I've got a software that can turn any image into a cross stitch pattern but when I tried to use it it printed the design out so large it went across about 12 pieces of paper. I couldn't work out how to scale down the design (even though the packaging showed a dainty little image on the front of a card) So I gave up, I understand your frustration.

I have something similar and I can't even thread the thing! A friend of my daughter's who makes her own clothes did manage to do it, but she's left town now and I can only sew with the red thread that she put on it! I hope that you have a happier sewing experience than me. Ow.... Just stuck a needle in my thumb!

Do you have the manual? there's normally instructions for how to thread the machine in there, though they don't always make a lot of sense sadly.

Yes there's a manual and no - makes no sense at all. English written by an Outer Mongolian who learned English in Russia, taught by a native Double Dutch speaker! LOL.

I don't know how to use one, but I wish I did. My sister's husband just bought her a brand new one. My mom has one that her grandmother used. It's really an antique. She treasures it as her grandmother has been gone for decades. It's in her front living room.

My Singer is an old one not quite antique yet, I got in from eBay too though so it's not a family heirloom sadly. Using sewing machines isn't hard once you've done a few things, I recommend starting with a hand operated one if you've never used one though as electric ones go fast.

I have no experience with the Janome brand although I have heard of it. I have a Kenmore and use a Singer at work. I used a Bernina in sewing classes in collage. I have a Singer and a New Home that both need some work. (A man was getting rid of them and just gave them to me.) HOpe you enjoy your new machine.

I'd never heard of them as a sewing machine manufacturerer before, It seemed ok when I set it up and threaded it but I still need to try it out properly.

I would be interested in knowing how well it works, if you don't mind letting us know.

Don't you just love ebay? I hope you have a lot of luck with it. I do have an old Singer sewing machine too. It is somewhere up in the attic. I don't like to sew. The only thing I'll sew is a simple stitch or a button that needs to be replaced. I wish I could get more enthusiastic about sewing and take some lessons.

I did a short course recently as I'm interested in making costumes for children and events that require it. It's not a shard as you think once you know what you are doing.

Not me nancyrowina. I can sew on a button and that's about it. I would love to know how but I just don't think I have the knack for sewing. I cross stitch and stuff like that but as far as clothes from a pattern..I don't have a hope in the world. Years ago my daughter was supposed to be a little reindeer in a play and I thought..I'll just make the costume myself. A little brown jumpsuit with a tail and some antlers from the store. WELL...the night before I am trying to fit her and measure this and that and then it dawned on me...I am in over my head...thank goodness for the seamstress on the corner! She was so understanding and whipped it right together for me. I haven't tried again since.

I'd love to know how to make an outfit to measure, I've made one dress for myself from a pattern but that's it so far, until now I've only ever done things like quilts and repairing things.

I have two sewing machines and a serger, but I have not used them in awhile. They are buried under junk. I have sewn a lot in the past. It sounds like you got quite a deal.

I bought my granddaughter one of those a couple of Christmases ago. She's always designing and making clothes for her teddy and doll, and she also makes little teddy bears and puppets. She uses it quite a lot and was thrilled to bits with it when I gave it to her. I bought her a sewing basket for her birthday too, which is on 14th December, because she's always using her Mum's, lol. So she has plenty of aids now for her sewing projects. Brightest Blessings.

I used to sew a lot, but rarely do now. Janome is supposed to be a good brand but I haven't heard anything about the mini sew. Have fun!

Dressed artist teddy bear - Artist designed and crafted teddy bear
I learned to sew when I was three and have been sewing ever since. I am working at buying another sewing machine for the finer sewing I want to do. I have a New Home right now that I use constantly for making teddy bears. (My business is as a teddy bear artist) I need the finer machine to make the clothing for the bears and for making my own clothes. I do a lot of heirloom sewing and also design wonderful outfits for the bears so it is important to have a machine with a larger stitch selection and better controls for the finer sewing. I am posting a picture of one of the bears that I made and dressed for a raffle for the college that I am attending. It kind of gives you an idea of the sewing I do.

This is so cool.. I don't know anything about sewing but looking at the picture of the sewing machine here, it brought me back to my childhood memories whereby my late grandma loved to sew and she's good at it. Hers was the black Singer. Lots of people last time used the black Singer sewing machine. Awwwww, I totally miss her so much. Thanks for bringing back these memories for me.. they were happy ones.
