Tylenol may cause deaths

Did you read this news story over at CNN about how over counter drugs like Tylenol and other acetaminophen containing drugs have been linked with numerous deaths? Very scary! I use that stuff all the time for my migraines. Couldn't live without it. They are thinking about taking Tylenol products off the shelves. http://linkbee.com/Tylenoldeaths

They already know that over-consumption can cause liver damage. But, they're not saying if the cases are from over-consumption or from regular use. If this is from regular use, then they have some legitimate concerns. But, if it's because people don't follow the directions properly or don't keep them out of the reach of their children, then I think pulling them is premature. They don't work on me except as a back up to Advil if Advil isn't working. But, they've worked well for many people when properly taken. They need to be more clear in their statements rather than so generic that people begin to panic.

It's not necessarily true that people who take the recommended dosages of Tylenol won't be affected. There was a story just last night how a woman took the recommended dosage of Tylenol for her migraines for ten years and next thing you know she had to have a liver transplant. What people don't realize is that all medications can accumulate in the system

Thanks PYE, I heard about that story too. Turns out, just two caplets of Tylenol more than you need can cause liver damage. But what if the recommended dosage is too high as listed on the bottle? Makes me wonder what is too much.

Thanks for sending this report. I don't take a lot of Tylenol. I do take a lot of Goody's and BC Powders which I'm not sure if they have acetaminopen in them or not.

Hey, Shaun, I did some research for you. Goody's Powders has acetaminophen in it, which is what Tylenol is. BC Powders does not, it has a salicylamide, which is like an aspirin. Both powders contain aspirin and caffeine as well. These three ingredients: Aspirin, caffeine, and acetaminophen combined are very good at relieving pain, but each has its side effects and you risk liver and kidney and stomach problems or damage from them.

Thank you very much for this warning. I will just get BC Powders then. I have to be careful already from a shot that I take from having Multipls Sclrois it can cause Liver damage also. I get my liver checked with blood work about every three months. So far I have been alright but it still worries me.

Dr Mercola and several others have been saying that about Tylenol for quite awhile. I'm glad it finally made the news and I hope they do take it off the shelves... BUT most of the other pain killers are just as bad in one way or another. The safest way to handle pain is to use white willow bark and natural relaxing methods, but I don't know how well that would do for migraines. Maybe you could check out biofeedback?

Hello beauty queen. I also take capsules contained Tylenol for cold and migraine. This is the only capsule that helps with my migraine when it happens. I am wondering whether they have healthy ingredients for the medicine of this kind so that we won't have to suffer from its side effects. Thank you so much for the information, my dear beauty queen. Take care.

Yeah, tylenol kills people because people abuse painkillers like loritab and vicodin. It actually wouldnt be a problem to take 5 or 6 of these at a time if they weren't mostly tylenol. The tylenol is actually put in with the hydrocodone or oxycodone so that it cant be abused. If people take too much, they're poisoned! ...no joke.

I read about that too. Very interesting. And I find it especially scary since I'm an older person and my rheumatologist has had me on mega doses of it for the past few years. (By mega doses I mean 600 mg every four to six hours, along with something so I don't get ulcers from it.) Tylenol has been around for at least since the 70's (or maybe even the 60's), you would have thought they would have noticed a lot more problems before now and the FDA would have done something earlier. It'll be interesting to see whether they ban it in the future or what they will do.

In the U.K. it is called paracetamol, and there have been a number of deaths from it because an overdose can cause severe liver damage, occasionaly complete destruction of the liver. However if taken in the correct doseage is a very effective analgesic/pain killer. There have been suggestions about adding an antidote to paracetamol poisoning, but so far this has not been done. Instead the amount you can buy over the counter has been restricted to 16 tablets at a time. (That wouldn't stop someone from going around a number of stores and buying lots). The main problem is that it is contained in so many different medicines especially cold/flu treatments that it is possible to accidentally overdose by taking a number of different medicines at the same time.

I've been hearing about this. I've never used Tylenol a day in my life. Also, the different times I've had a cold or something even pass up the cold remedies as they have acetaminophen in it as well. Did you know the prescription medication oxydone has acetaminophen in it too? What people might be doing is taking a combo of these medications not realizing they are taking more than they should

I have always adhered to the saying that 'too much of something is bad enough'. If there's a need to, everything should be taken at a minimal. If in a severe migraine case, just a pill would ebb the pain away. Sometimes, I don't have the time to go to a doctor unless it's really throbbing mad. On some days that I have minor pain, I just avoid painkillers of any kind totally. I think it's more safer in a way. Thanks for sharing this...

If that is the cae then the squuky clean image of Johnson and Johnson will get a hit . I remember reading couple of years ago that once accidentally one consignment of Tylenol got laced with potassium cyanide and Johnson & Johnson without taking any chance recalled the entire lot of Tylenol thereby taking a hit to the tune couple of million dollars . It was a classic example of rapid service recovery . Now seeing this news .....just makes me wonder
