Frogs or toads...?

I have new visitors in my garden. hard to tell if I have frogs or toads. I moved 4 of them away from my yard to protect my dogs from frogs(toads) and frogs (toads) from my dogs. They are back!!!! I am afraid, because toads have parotoid (or poison) gland behind the eyes. That poison can kill medium size dog. In the other hand, dogs are hard to be keep away from moving objects. How would you recognize the difference? What would you do if you were me? Note: killing is not an option, adoption is not possible...living in peace is limited because of my dogs....

You live in the U.S.. We don't have any frogs or toads that are all that toxic. They wouldn't be a threat to your dogs. If we lived in South America or Africa that would be a far different story. Just ignore them. If your dogs kill a few..fine, if not they'll help keep the bugs out of your garden.

Here in the U.S. we have a limited # of poisoness animal species. There's the big 3 snakes the copperhead, cottonmouth & rattlesnake ,,, the beaded lizard & hela monster ( found in the desert regions ) & finally the coral snake found in the south ( but only really dangerous if you let it chew on you since it has no fangs to inject the poison ). If you get into the insect world there's far more nasties. If we lived on another continent there could likely be a lot more.

Toads will make your dogs foam at the mouth, and their secretions are unpleasant, but not dangerous. My cats, after catching one, leave them alone.

I guess this is going to sound silly to u buyt we always called them toad frogs when i was growing up so i didn't know there was a difference in them. I use to see them alot when i was young but sure don't see them very often anymore. we use to try to catch them & were always told if they pee on u it will make u have warts, lol. I guess that was one of our mother's tales. I'm surprised ur dog doesn't keep them scared off.

I always call them frogs, but big ones are usually toads. My visitors are very small, so i am very confused...

Hi pola, you are in a predicament. I'm sorry I can't tell you the difference, similar to aligator and crocodile, but I think I'd search wiki, and quickly, as you have said, toads are poisonous. Take care.

I see one poster stated the difference between frogs and toads, and I'm sure they're right. In Australia, cane toads are a major problem, so much so, that in some areas there is a bounty on them. People trap them in some kind of trap, and then kill them. They are brown and grow rather large. Maybe you could trap the ones bothering you. Good luck1

Yeah and after you trap them you can sell them to French restaurants! Frog legs are a delicacy :D

I'm so glad to hear that your not looking to kill them off :) I also understand your concern for your dogs...maybe a fence around the area? Something that would make it harder for the dogs to get to them. You might also work on training them to not bother them by rewarding them when they leave them alone. It takes some work but usually you can train a dog to not do something as well as doing something. Good luck, ribbit!! ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

LOL My bad...somehow I got the impression that they were near a pond or water of some sort...so I was thinking of fencing off the area they were in. Now I see that they are all over the yard...that makes it alot tougher. Other than trying to train the dogs to see them as friends rather than foes, I don't know. Good luck with it though. Toads have a drier, warty-looking skin, little or no webbing between their toes, and they hop. Frogs have more of a slippery-looking skin, webbing between their toes, and leap (their back legs are longer, too). Unless your dogs are not very intelligent, you really don't need to worry about the poison. If a dog gets a toad in its mouth, the poison released tastes bad enough that the dog will spit the toad out. Most dogs wouldn't eat a toad because of this. We had dogs that, after they learned their lesson, actually liked to play with toads. They seemed amused at getting a toad to hop, but knew better than to pick it up with their mouth. Hope this helps!

Hi Pola! I am not sure if frogs have poisonous glands. May be, I have not come across those kind of frogs here in India. Now a days, we rarely see frogs, even in rainy season because our cities have become concrete jungle. I think you should take your dog to some other place, if he wants to roam, instead of garden because it will be difficult to make him understand that frogs could be poisonous.

Visitors aren't always welcome LOL You have the perfect example :) As for differences, it is not always apparent because there are so many different frogs and toads, and some can look like the other. But Toads are usually bulkier than frogs. Frogs tend to have a smooth skin and toads rougher drier skin. Also toads live on land and only breed in water, while frogs live on water or close to water.

Yeah that can become a problem with your dogs. However when I was a kid, I used to visit my cousin that lived in a farm. Sometimes there were toads but the dogs seemed to pretty much not pay attention to them, or just play with them. I don't remember if any one dog got sick because of the toads, but most of them didn't. So maybe it's not as bad as we think:) Good luck though LOL

Just catch them somehow into a bucket of water, you can take boys' help for it. They are experts with these, and you can leave them taking to rivers or beaches.

It's either you kill...not good..or probably set a trap and have them transfer to another 4 house away from yours. you simply just can't get an throw them away in some near by house because they might come back again. or just call wild life and have them take those toads.

I imagine since they are in the garden, they are toads. I would look both up on the internet to be sure, but, frogs need to live near water. They are amphibious. I know that if my cats catch a toad they foam at the mouth and drop it quickly. They never get really sick from it. They also learn and do not catch one again.

I see one here in the backyard, it's not a problem because my cat is indoor. She never goes out on her own and she seems to be afraid of outdoor too. Not sure about poisonous frog or toad, never heard of them here. we don't have rattle snake or anything like that here either. If I were you I guess I would keep my dog away from them but it must be difficult because you can't keep dog inside, they always need to be walked. About the difference, to be honest I don't remember. but my hubby calls the green one in our backyard 'toad' so I'm guessing water is the difference. we don't live near water and the toad seems to appear close to the tree.

Frogs are amphibious, meaning they like to hang around water. Is there a pond or river or some such near you? Also, they're usually green in color. Toads are not amphibious, and generally brown in color.

OK, my visitors are brownish...in color....there is no water except my next door neighbors swimming pool...let say 1 feet away from my fence....

You've made a little mistake there Barbara, toads are also amphibians, they're from the same class of animals, but are more adapted to dry environments. ;)

mmmm----well if you kiss one of them and it turns into a Prince then it's a frog.... Okay just kidding...saw some of the other responses and it does sound as if it would be a toad if it's brownish in color. Is there anyway you could "trap" them and then set them free elsewhere, like a park??

trap? ....I used small container and trap them in second, moved to abandoned next door yard, but they like my yard much better, so they are back... I skipped kissing...

you wouldn't be able to see if one is poisonous or not....only by experience....
