I have learned that fruit flies are very good swimmers? Some of you might remember that I was dealing with a problem with fruit flies after we bought some bananas some last month. I posted a discussion about it and got quite a few suggestions to deal with the problem. I am happy to report that the person that suggested a container with vinegar really helped. I put some wine vinegar in small containers, covered them with plastic wrap, got a rubber band around the container so the plastic was really tight, and then with a toothpick make a number of holes on top. At first it seemed to me that the holes were way too small and there was no way that those fruit flies will get in. But to my surprise they did. In about 2 days I had so many of them inside it wasn’t even funny. They seem to get attracted by the smell of the vinegar, enter trough the little holes and then have trouble finding their way out. Some of them fall in the vinegar and stay there swimming for a long time, and some are even able to finally get into the side of the container. Ok so I suggested the Olympics but I couldn’t care less about their career choices LOL I’m just so happy that it is working and that I was able to either get rid of them or at least get them into a manageable number. So if someone else is struggling with fruit flies, do use the vinegar. Either wine vinegar or apple cider. It works. It seems to work if the plastic wrap is not used, but I had more success with it. Have you ever had problems with fruit flies after buying some fruit? Do you think they come in the fruit itself? Or are attracted to it? If that is so, where do they come from?

I intend to try it, as I'm having the same problem now. I agree it doesn't seem like it would work. I'm willing to try anything after walking into my kitchen a short while ago. It is terrible.
