Canning vegitables

Well if I can anything this year it will be from the farmers market cause my garden just is not producing what I had hoped for. Out of all the tomato plants we put out 12 plants only two plants have produced tomatoes! Our squash isn't doing anything but giving male flowers and the cukes are still tiny not even a half inch long! We did harvest some beans......enough for one dinner! So if I do any canning this year it will be with produce from the farmers market. This makes me sad. How many vegitables have you canned this year?

Hi, we have planted tomatos for the first time this year and had lots of them, though in a few of them have been attacked by insects even though we sprayed them. I never canned tomatos myself, mum used to do that, and don't know how to do it. it would be a great idea instead leaving them to rot if we don't use them. We have also long green beans, potatoes, onions and the melons are small. We have a field since we have no garden. The most amazing one is the basil shrub it has the biggest leaves I ever saw.

I am putting out mellons today (long growing season in florida so they should do ok) and putting out more carrots and radishes. I have never done well with onions. Our tomatoes were a bust but I am going to keep tending them in hopes of a miracle!

Sometimes there may be something with the seeds or plant that doesn't work well. Last year all potatos started getting the root growth soon after they were collected.

I generally do not can, I have made jellies and relishes before. I prefer to freeze. I do not have much in the garden, just tomatoes and peppers this year. Good crop of tomatoes, inspite of hail a time or two. My friend said hers went from green to black and never ripened. I think she had a fungus in her soil. Farmers market offers good things, though.

Oh how sad that the tomatoes just turned black! I will try the epsom salt idea.

Oh! I miss my garden! Since we moved into an apartment, we no longer have a place to put a garden. I had thought of trying to grow one or two things in pots on the balcony, but it just never happened this year. Perhaps next Spring, I can get the pots and plant tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini!

Well a plus with the cukes is that you can always pickle the smaller ones and make the small sweet pickles. I love those! I am sorry that your garden is not producing. We started out with a good garden and then the place we were renting the owner broke up with his gf and decided that he wanted to move back home. We dug up all of the potatoes that we could but everything else we had to leave. We have a few very small tomato seedlings going right now. They should produce a bit before the cold weather hits. I did get a great deal on some cukes and I made bread and butter pickles as well as some dill pickles. I did not get a chance to make any sweets though. I would really love to get some more deals on some corn and tomatoes to can. We use alot of corn and tomatoes/tomato sauce and paste around here. I hope that you will have better luck with your fall garden.
