Do you bake your own bread?

I am making a starter for sourdough bread today and making white bread today. Which leads me to the question of how many of you mylotters make your own bread? How many use a breadmachine? I do both the breadmachine (though strictly for dough I don't bake in it) and by hand. Today I am doing it old school. I love the smell of fresh baked bread and to me it tastes better than store bought. of course it is better for you too.

I make all sorts of bread by hand. I've never owned a bread machine and never want one. It seems like you're not really making bread if you have a machine to do it for you!

Yes, I can see it if you have arthritis or other health problems, but for me, kneading bread is therapeutic. It's part of the creation of something good - not just that tastes good, but is actually good.

I like the option of using a bread machine but I never bake in it just use it to make dough. Oh and my machine also makes jam so that is a nice feature. I like making bread the old fashioned way also but some times my hands hurt too much for it (good ol' arthritis and I know I am only 38 but have a family history of arthritis and I have it in my hands and wrists and feet and ankles).

Hey sweet! I have never baked my own bread except many years ago when I was back in high school! I am not very good about using yeast! I would love to bake my own bread though because I am such a bread fanatic and love the taste and smell of homemade bread baking! I don't have a bread machine and really don't know anything about the making of bread at all. Is it difficult to do? And is it time consuming? Can it be done in a regular oven? I'm sure the taste is well worth the work!

I bake all my breads in my regular oven. I only use the bread machine for doing the dough but here lately I have been doing everything the old fashioned way and not using the machine at all. I love making bread. It takes time off and on throughout the day but while it is rising you are free to do other things. It takes about 30 mins of mixing your ingredients (or less) then it has to rise in a warm place for a couple of hours then you punch it down and knead it for about 5 minutes and shape it (loaves, rolls or braids) let it rise again for about an hour then bake it and eat it.

I do in the winter. I make a type of Cuban bread that Hubby loves. I don't make it in the summer but in the winter it is great hot from the oven and topped with melted butter. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

My mom used to bake bread when we were kids and I remember the smell and the anticipation of having a warm roll with butter. so yummy! Unfortunately I did not follow in her footsteps but want to try sometime. I used to work in a bakery many years ago where we made bread from scratch so I am familiar with how to do from my work experience and remembering some from helping mom long ago. My husband who is a fantastic cook has tried to bake bread(sourdough mainly) from scratch and it never turns out very good. very dense! So I will try some day soon.

That sounds like it will be really good. I don't have a bread machine but I have made some bread before in a loaf pan. I've made bananan nut bread, cinnamon bread and zuchinni bread before. I never made just plain bread yet.

oh I make quick breads too but love to do yeast breads. It is relaxing and frugal at the same time.

Well usually i buy my own bread from the store, but we do have a bread machine and you still have to buy things to make your own bread and by the time you by the box of bred ingredients stuff you are about to just save when you buy the loaf of bread and of course when making your own and using the bread machine you are using your time away from doing other stuff so i say buying the bread of loaf is easier and it taste just fine and i know bread from the bread machine actually does taste better.

Well actually the cost is much less when you think how many loaves you can make from a bag of flour, yeast and water. I don't buy the premixed boxes for bread machines I buy bread flour and yeast. If I am making it old school without the machine the savings are even greater cause I use an all purpose flour which is even cheaper. A loaf of bread around here is almost $3.00 so making it myself is just easier on the wallet.

I do bake bread from time to time. I like to let the bread machine mix up the dough while I do something else. I have a really good time experimenting with recipes. The problem is that if I make it, I eat it, and I eat a lot of it.

Ok gotta admit I've never made bread from scratch - my idea of 'homemade bread' is the frozen loaves you thaw, let rise, and bake. Guess that would be 'home baked' not home made :( My Mom has a bread machine and although she doesn't seem to use it much my little sisters (early 20s) used it when they were still at home - hummm they moved out and got an apartment together wonder if Mom sent the bread machine with them :)

Wow... It is very good and healthy. Unfortunately I have little time to create a cake or bread. Although I am not eat bread very often. By making your own food, you know exactly food material and mixed with fruit as you like.
