Have You Ever Suffered From Gout???

I have recently had a flareup of Gout. Instead of hurting in my big toe, I'm having fire in my ankles. In reading what foods cause the problem & what food to relieve the pain, I am finding that I'm NOT eating those foods to start with. Even though the pain is unbearable, I'm not interested in having a doctor stick a needle in my ankles to let me know what I need to do. So I'd like to know, if you've suffered from Gout, what did you do to relieve the pain & swelling??? Anything short of the needle will be greatly appreciated!!!

THANKS AGAIN for finding it for me!!! It's the things like this that make you so special to those of us here on the Lot!!! I best not ever hear that you're thinking of leaving ever again!!! I'd threaten to spank you if you even think about it, but it would mean you're thinking of it constantly!!! Tell you what, I'll spank you every day that you stay!!!

Hi, LadyMarissa. I have never suffered from Gout nor have I ever had any pain in my ankles. I have swelled up during my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies. And that was all. One time my doctor put me on some medication for my Cholesterol and it left me swelled up. So, I stopped taking it. I have never had Gout before, and I hope to never have it either. I hope that you will feel much better very soon. And I hope that your doctor can give you some permanent treatment for this condition too. Take care.

After a LOT of experimenting, it seems sodium sets mine off!!! Drinking tons of water seems to help clear the sodium out of my system. Swollen feet I can handle. It's the pain that drives me nutz!!!

NO, I'm NOT stupid!!! With the second onset of Gout, I figured out real quick who the loser was going to be...so, I've taken care of the problem!!!

Water certainly helps, but the only real solution is to lower uric acid below 6mg/dL. Everything else is a lottery, with one permanent long-term loser. (must I spell out who?)

Well I certainly hope you go a more natural route to help yourself with gout than take medications. My doctor wanted to prescribe to me a medication that has a severe warning that it can trigger heart attacks...uh, no think I'll pass. I'm trying to self-heal with a variety of natural supplements as I get flare-ups of gout and have rheumatoid arthritis. so been taking Omega-3 fish oil, cherry extract capsules...for some people that Glucosamine stuff works--what I need to do is maybe take more of the cherry extract...only take one capsule a day so might take two and see what happens. Also I'm slowly getting back into a yoga exercise routine to try and get my flexibility back again...it's slow going since I haven't done yoga in years and can't stretch the way I used to, but I surprised myself when I did one pose Mmmm...think I'll ever reach this point? This gives me a chuckle every time I watch it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm_D8yitOMM

Why would you want to do that to yourself??? It looks like it hurts!!! My doctor knows I prefer the All Natural route when I walk in her door. She wants to stick a needle in my ankles to see what she can draw out. Then she will offer me a prescription. First off, I HATE needles. Second, I think that would hurt like hell!!! Third, I told her to let me see what I can do with diet changes before giving me a script. I don't trust any meds!!! I couldn't find the cherry extract around here, so I bought 5 pounds of fresh cherries. I've eaten so many cherries today, I'm just about sick. I've cut way back on my Coca~Colas. I'm drinking a lot more water. I'm taking an all natural diuretic. I'm getting plenty of exercise walking to the bathroom!!! Now, to change the subject just a little. It seems I remember you suffering from Carpel Tunnel a while back. I heard on the news that they think Yoga can help get rid of Carpel Tunnel. If that doesn't give you incentive, i don't know what will!!!

My husband has issues with gout if he eats alot of protien. At first we thought it was just beef but then we discovered that it was protien all together. Although we do not drink often, if he does have a drink and has also been eating more beef and beans than normal this flares it up also. The one thing that really helps him is to eat fresh cherries. They perscribed him a pill but because the cherries are so effective we stopped filling the perscription and I have forgotten the medicine's name. I will buy a bag of cherries every time I see them in the store and this has kept him going and the pain ans swelling away (along with watching what he eats)

Oh one more thing. Something that has helped, but I've tried it only twice is to start the medication before the attack becomes full blown. If you're an 'experienced' gout sufferer, you'd feel a little tingling in your unfortunate joint a couple of days before a major attack. It has worked so far.

Thank you for the information. The meds didn't help me. As it turned out, mine was a food allergy. It took a while to figure out which food was the demon. Fortunately, it wasn't a food I couldn't live without!!! I now appear to have the problem under control!!! I also now pay more attention to what I eat & how my body reacts after I eat it.

That's a fortunate development (I think). What did the doctor say? I've never heard of a food allergy that caused pain in the ankles.

LadyMarissa, My dad use to have very bad flare ups with gout and after observing a few diets about 8 years ago, he did not have them anymore flare ups since. He eats fresh cherries and drinks fresh cherry juices. This is one of the most important fruits you should never go without. And you will not even have an incident when you accidental take soy bean or liver or some high protein food. Every weekend, he will have a concoction of apple cider vinegar and honey along with his breakfast. This concoction is known to detox for him and with these 2 observances he did not have any flares or incidents since. Also, his cholesterol level is very much in check. Hope this will be of help.
