In your culture how is respect to elders defined? In ours, you should not (never) call elders by their name but add a suffix that gives the meaning "elder". Elders can use anything including names and pronouns to refer to younger people. There are many other complex definitions for polite usage when talking to elders.

Respecting elders in our culture is usually done by using the words "po" and "opo". It is a Filipino word for yes, i think. For example: when your grandmother asked you if you are done eating, you can answer by saying the word, "opo". And we usually bless the elders here. By bowing or kissing the elders hands.
