Every year, in many countries, there is this SALE in Big Scale with fantastic offers and huge discounts. If you are there, will you end up buying the items on Sale with huge discounts, prmotional items with free gift, free vouchers, lucky draws & contest. So, are you an 'Impulsive Buyer'? Do share your views and experience here, or perhaps what type of annual big scale SALE is called is your country? Some facts : Malaysia Mega Sales - up to 80% discount storewide (4/7/09 till 31/8/09) have lucky draws to win cars! Singapore Sale - huge crowds from all over the world because Singapore is a shopping hub for branded goods! Btw, if you did buy the items on sale, do you really need it or end up just kept aside at one corner of your house ??

This discussion is a very good one. It is a fact that when companies try to sell their products at discounts, a huge number of consumers end up buying the products not because they need the products, but because the items cost less. I for one am not a compulsive shopper.Never was one and never shall be. I buy things only when I need them. When I need something,I look for a sale and if there are none I buy what I need to at the price I have to pay. But I don't shop just coz things are available at a lower price. Happy myLotting!

Dear cbeee3, Give a pat on your shoulder, you did it well. You never give in to the 'sales temptations'. Actually 'Sale" is great if you really need the item and it is selling at special price with add on values. BUT, most of the consumers ended up buying what is cheap, great prices but not the things that they need. End up..as a birthday gift, or christmas gifts for someone.. that's not so bad, some even lying idle at one corner of the store room. Might as well keep the money in the bank, can earn interest! Tks for your views, hope to hear your response on another interesting topic. If you are online at myLOt, perhaps you can share your opinion on the following discussion started by me, just check my profile : 1) Do you prefer to use credit card or Cash? 2) What you do with the loose coins? All the best and happy myLotting!

I used to be an impulsive buyer. I wouldn't even look at the cost, if I saw something and I wanted it, I'll just grab it off the shelf and buy it. But now, I have learned to think about my purchases and learned not to just grab something off the racks and learned to think twice before purchasing anything. It has not been easy but as I've said, I learned slowly but surely I learned to compare prices, and not to buy directly off the rack

Dear chaime... we learn as we journeyed on. It is never too late to learn...give a pat on your shoulder, you have done a good job! When I was younger and working and no commitments, I too like you, but I did check the price... Even though I checked the price, I still buy! If I like it I must buy it, if not I can't sleep, keep thinking about it, the next morning I'll be the first one outside the shop , get ready to buy! Once in awhile I still have this 'impulsive buying', 2 years ago, I went to this boutique, beautiful coctail dresses, evening gowns - which I won't be able to wear often, not much functions..yet I still bought 3 pcs... nearly RM1100.00... Thanks for sharing and happy myLotting!

hello Iriene88, I am not an impulsive buyer at all. Even the malls are having a big sale if I don't need to buy I'm not going. I just go to malls if it is really necessary. Having sales in the malls is none stop. Making some if not all so tempting. So the best thing to avoid a lot of credits is to control our selves.

Dear bnaufal, Thanks for sharing your views here. I am glad to know that you will only buy the items that you need. That's Great! There are some impulsive shoppers who will just attracted to huge discount and end up buying the things which they not really need. Not urgent items. Just like 1 famous movie : The Confession of A Shopalholics!

Hi Iriene, I'm impulsive when there's a sale for kids apparel. I take advantage of the huge discounts, and load up on shirts, pants and shoes for my kids - things I know will be used immediately or later. I go for brands if I can get them at half the regular price. But I don't stock up on things that my family doesn't need, even when they're sold at rock bottom prices. I only buy those that are useful to us.

Hi doryvien, it's great to meet you here. Tks! I am just like you. When I see kids apparel on sale at 60% or 70% off the normal price, I will be frenzy about it. I will look for the sizes and hold on to it, pieces by pieces and make him try all the apparels...lol It is good that you are not tempted to buy unwanted items even they are having the best offers ever! Keep it up!

I don't buy things because of lucky draws, and yet I am one of the worst kind of buyers. I am not the type to have the patience to go from one shop to another shop, memorizing the prices and special gifts, and then decide on which shop to buy from. This means walking down again 5 floors just to go back to the first shop which offers the better deal. I am quite impulse. Give me a slight discount which I think is reasonable, I would take it. This is, of course, given that I do like the item. My friends accuse me of being a funny judgment on buying things. Give me an item that I want, at a price that I am willing to pay for, and PROVIDED that the sales assistant attending to me is cute, I am game for it. And yeah, my friends are right.

I use to be a serious Impulse buyer and would never go shopping with a list, preferring to buy things on the spur of the moment or if I thought something was a bargain I would get it straight away without checking. Not anymore though, when ever I go shopping now I stick to a strict list of items and never deviate from it. Although saying that I always make sure I have a few extra pounds in my pocket so that if I see a DVD on offer, really cheap, and it is one I want I can treat myself.

I'd like to say that I am not an impulsive buyer. I'd like to say that I shop rationally. I'd like to say that I shop wisely and never buy things that will end up in one corner of my house. Unfortunately, I am unable to say all those as I am a natural sucker when it comes to shopping wisely. I love everything cute and no matter how 'useless' they are, I'll still purchase it. That is the reason these days, all the money are kept in my husband's wallet and all I have is not more than USD10 in my purse. My husband knows that if he lets me have more, it will all be gone that same day. So the money I have is only to be used for the kiddie ride for my boy. Whatever I needed to purchse for myself will be chunked into the trolley and hubs will do the payment. He will disgard anything he finds 'useless but cute'! Thank goodness for my husband!

Dear submerryn, You always make me chuckle when I read your response. My 'weakness' are for cute, art & craft products. That's why I tell my son to "forbid" me going to Memory Lane, Living Cabin, Hinode..etc..., I always end up buying, later give as gifts to others..lol..really wasting 'good money'! Thank goodness, your hubby is wiser as a shopper...for myself, my husband is the one likes to put all the items on offers inside the trolleys, I am the one who start to take it out,..lol. That's why I do not allowed him to go shopping without a shopping list...if NOT..our house will have everything doubles, lying at one corner, and credit card will be over limit!!

Iriene88, I used to be an "impulsive buyer" before being a mum, and now, what I do is, I will go window shop during the non-sale period, and waited patiently for the sale to come. I will grab as much stock as I needed in some basic necessities. Even with the temptation of the vouchers, lucky draws and stuff, I will also still be buying the extra item of what I have bought. Anyway, now my shopping are mostly for the baby, and not many stuff for myself though.. It's now a reverse, I am a "careful buyer" now... :) Happy MyLotting

Dear cwong77, Thanks to your baby for transforming you to a wiser shopper! I respect your patience to wait for the SALE and optimize the huge savings, great job! It is wise to purchase the items you need daily at great quantity during offer, you actually brought forward your purchases to take advantage of all the offers. As long as the items you need...check the expiry date if they are perishable products... Thanks for sharing & hope to hear from you again @ myLot.

I used to be but because of the economic situation, I'm more careful with my money now. I have to be more careful with my money because I ran up bills by being an impulsive buyer in the past. Now I'm paying the bills for it and I've learned my lesson. I enjoy shopping but I feel its best for consumers to be careful about buying items just to get free gifts. There is usually no free lunch and it is best to be weary of these offers.

Seems like there are no large sales nationwide anymore. Now there are huge sales somewhere almost at all times. There were just a 50% sale at ecerything at one of the largest housholdgoods store here. For instance. I do not usually shop for things I do not need anymore. maybe just when it comes to music books and movies. But or other things I have a pretty good idea what I really do wwant and do not buy a lot of other stuff. I'll decide what I want and then wait for t to come on a special price

Hi Iriene, I wouldn't say that I'm a compulsive buyer at all but I do like to take advantage of the bargains in the sale. We don't have any big draws here like you mention but we have sales twice a year, at the beginning of February and August. I will usually hit my favourite clothes shop then and hope that there are some good reductions but it's such a nice shop anyway that even out of sale time I have been given gifts of clothes by the owner when I have bought more than a couple of things. She gave me what I considered a hideous jacket with a high collar a few winters ago which resembled a bed quilt, it has turned out to be the warmest thing I ever owned and is perfect for wearing on windy days walking by the sea. So I didn't actually need that but it was a gift anyway. I always think only here.

That's absolutely wonderful, she is a nice business woman who appreciate her customers. Wow, you have built a good repport there! It's good that you do take advantage of the sale, actually we can save quite a bit on regular necessities. As long as we do not buy the items that we are not using and end up in the closet untouched! I don't often shop in department stores or home stores. I do shop at Target every now and then for things like birthday party presents for my kids friends or little things I might need for the house like a new doormat. They generally don't have huge sales, their clearance items are usually just 10 ot 15% off. And the deeper discount items aren't things I would want to buy. Now as for the grocery store if an item is on deep discount and I hadn't planned on buying it but it is something that I do use/eat or something I can't usually afford but can with the discounts I'll buy and maybe stock up. My thing is that I love shopping at thrift stores. They have certain items half off each week and I am always happy when I find something I want that is half off, like a Banana Republic shirt for $3.50 which looked brand new. I've started redecorating my daughter's room with a few thrift store finds that would have cost a lot more at the regular stores. Like I bought a wicker bench that fit her room theme, that has a storage in the seat, for just $15. I found similar types online usually for over $100. We had a budget set and stayed below it and found some great things!

At the moment in my country there are many sales due to the recession. It is the middle of winter here and one can purchase a winter coat, boots ect.. for 70% of the original retail price. Even stock that has just been brought out is on sale. Im really finding it difficult not to get carried away with my purchases. There have been many occasions where I buy something on a whim and then dont end up wearing or using it. Its kind of depressing to consider what I could have done with the money. E.g save it for a holiday ... However during the last few weeks I have put some items back on the shelf after considering whether I would really use them.

Dear tabatha1989, I know how you feel with those temptations It is sooo cheap, if I do not buy now, I will regret! The branded bed sheet, quilt, comforters are selling 80% off here during SALE, it is genuine SALE! Outside, night market -brandless- selling more than that...I was holding 3 sets of bedsheet set, beautiful, truly worth it! Walking around with it, my mind is so ??? at last I decided to put it back... It is a 'Good Buy' but I still have to say 'Good Bye'... If I am still working and earning, I will definitely BUY! I am now still thinking about the 3 sets of bedsheet..hmmm It 's kind of depressing if we end up buying things that we hardly use and tied down the CASH and taken the space at the store room. No worries, I console myself, there will always be another SALE with niceere designs.... tks and happy myLotting!

Dear tabatha1989, Glad to hear from you again. I like the idea that you suggested. If we can't make the decision there and then, we should go around the mall and have a break. This will give us time to settled & we can think better when we are calm..out from the rush and influence by other shoppers at that particular place where we nearly BUY,buy,bye..lol That's what happen to my sister lately. First she purchased a white long sleeve shirt & a pair of black shoes. After I paid the bill, she told me she wanted to buy some undergarments...okay, I paid again. Then we wanted to go for dinner, as she passes by other shops, she then told me, let's go back again.. Just before the shop closed, she went back and bought the black jacket and trousers which she had tried earlier. I think you are RIGHT, we need to buy some TIME to think rationally, to double check our 'feelings' , as long as we still at the shopping mall! Excellent Idea, I will apply this creative idea the next time I went to the SALE ! Btw. tabatha..do gives your views and ideas at the following discussion that I started yesterday :- 1) What's your personal definition of happiness? 2) Do you wear spec or contact lenses, or perfect eye sight?? Thanks and meet you again in other topics...cheers!

Hi again, you've brought my attention to an interesting point. We've already discussed what happens when we all buy items we don't up using but what happens when we put an item back on the shelf. Many people I know find that if they put an item back they cannot help but thinking about it.. day and night.. untill they finally go back and get it. If its been brought and is gone they feel guttered. Many times I feel this way myself. However many other times I think ''thank goodness I rethought that purchase, it would have been a waste of money''. Perhaps if one is uncertain they should put the item back and go have a break e.g have a coffee, lunch, walk if they still feel like purchasing the item they could go back and buy it and if they no longer want it they can go home with a few extra dollars in their wallet.
