Forgetfulness is a sign of getting old?

How did we ever lived so much of our lives without using notebooks and little slips of paper, an alarm clock or getting a grandchild to remind you of the things that you have to do? It's quite frightening to think that one's future may be filled with many forgetful moments as many aging people will have the tendency to forget things easily or even totally forget it as they age. A forgetful memory is not something that we look forward to but planning ahead and taking steps to make it less inconvenient and stressful works out better for all concerned. You waste lest time, feel less stressed and others living with you are not too put out by the effects of your forgetfulness. Well, that's the honest truth as age and retention goes hand in hand and lest then perfect memory is inevitable. Why I joined mylot is because I wanted to exercise my brain so I will not be too forgetful when I hit old age. I hate to let my brain stagnant for a long time as it will either shut down and reduce me to senility or I tend to be very forgetful even forgot where I left the car keys? Are you a forgetful person and how do you improve your memory bank?

Sorry... what was the question.... Oh, yes, memory.... maybe our brains get full... a bit like when you save all those important bits of paper in a folder and it gets to a point where some falls out and gets lost ????? I do my best to keep my brain active with converstion/logic puzzles/learning new things etc but there are still times when i go into a room and forget why. I am quite good at remembering appointments and birthdays etc but not where I've put my keys...

this is the usual question with people who in split seconds tend to lose their brain functions. I don't remember birthdays as much as before so I need to record birthdays in my handset and let the alarm alert me when the time comes.

there are people who will forget when they are young, and as we get older,, it is easier to forget as we get more responsibilities for the day,, making a list is a common way to help

Thank you for the tips. I agree with you that making a list is the best way to avoid forgetfulness. As we age the brain is also aging which affect its effectiveness.

Oh, I think we utilized these things when we were younger, it just didn't mean as much then as it does now. Lack of stress. What a concept. Exercising the brain is so smart. i do the same things you are doing. One way to help this onslaught of forgetfuless is to just admit to it and make things easier on us. Like for instance, losing your keys. Get in the habit of puting your keys, or whatever, in the same place every time. Put a place or cute what not by the door or some place that works for you and place the keys there every time. Good luck and don't take it all too seriously.

Forgetting is more with old people and young generation too forgets something due to over stress and anxiety.A well occupied mind tends to forget more.Doing some meditation can clean up your mind and will help you to remind basic things without effort. But it is a strange fact that old people remember their past easily. So,I conclude that we forget things which we give less importance in life.Cheers!

Hi srganesh, it is true old people tend to talk about the past repeatedly. My grandma used to talk about world war II again and again as if the sufferings she endured during the war was something she would cherish in her memory forever.

I dont think so it is the sign of getting older, For me its the result and effect of hardwork we have suffered and also the things we used to do so. Stress can lead us to that kind of feeling , our mind that usually thinks every thing plans , anything then this is the result of all the things done in daily life. Also the diet and lifestyle of food that we eat too . It also contributed tou our forgetfullness. I'm one of this having forgotting something .oh

Aging can be one of the reason but shouldn't be fully blamed as they are many causes of forgetfulness as you have stated it here.
