Insomnia - does anyone deal with this?

Insomnia, to define it, is a condition where the sufferer cannot sleep or has difficulty staying asleep. I've done quite a bit of research on this, and while I've never been diagonosed by a doctor or a professional, I seem to meet the criteria for insomnia. Does anyone have insomnia or know someone who does? And what do you do if you do have insomnia? I know there are sleeping pills and medications but I'm totally against that. I don't want to be dependent on a sleeping aid. I have tried herbal teas made with spearmint and chamomile, which are supposed to be relaxing and supposed to help you sleep but they haven't worked for me.

I also suffer from insomnia at times because of my line of work. I'm up and about during nights and I have to force myself to sleep in the mornings which of course my body finds rather odd. What has worked for me is to simulate the night time environment: a dimly lit and well ventilated sleeping space plus some mood music in the background usually helps me in easing myself to sleep.

I forgot to add: make sure to keep your sleeping space sacred. That is, use it only for sleeping. Don't eat there or work there. I guess it's okay if you do a bit of light reading if that helps you sleep (works for me). Also, set a specific time that you sleep as much as possible, designate a time for waking up as well so your body clock can reset itself.

Thank you very much for your comments and your advice... I do generally listen to music - I put my iPod on shuffle - but maybe I should make a playlist of relaxing, mellowed out music. I will try to follow this advice and see if it helps. Thank you!

I agree with the body reset thing. I tend to experience this. It feels like my body is a living alarm clock.

If Insomnia is a king, I would always be its servant. I always have difficulty sleeping at night. I don't know why. I think I'm a werewolf or something. On the other hand, I sometimes write songs to pass the time, hoping I'll get sleepy afterwards.

I'm also insomnia's servant, as you put it. I've tried doing things to tire myself out, and I've tried different herbal methods, but nothing has worked so far... Hopefully we can both find the correct strategy to overcome insomnia.
