What are the free gifts given by your government to the people. Our state government is giving a 15inch color TV to most of the people who have a ration card. LPG stove with a gas connection is also given to poor people. Girls and boys who are studying in Government schools are given a Cycle as soon as they pass their secondary school exams.Lastly 25 kilos of rice are given to poor people at Rs.25/ which works out to just 50cents US. So does any of your government gives sort of freebies?

Hi rameshkumaar57, I am also from ur country. I do have objections to government giving such freebees. The moment government procures the rice of Rs.25/- to give to the large base of poor people, the price of next batch of rice goes up. The rich can afford to buy it, the middle class, especially the lower middle class that is just above that ration card level suffers enormous pressure. But u forgot that some State Governments are also giving free homes to the below poverty line folks. Even if v ignore the manipulations that go in it, why should such facility be given in the first place? Even if it is given, it should be given with a condition that the allottee and his children and grandchildren will not have more than 2 children. It would be the best way to try to meet family planning targets, which we have been consistently failing, and ensure poverty reduction. Now, poor people have three or four children each. They dont need to study hard and try to come up because the government is going to give them homes anyway. So why should they try to cross that BPL level? I think it is terribly unfair to levy taxes in the states which the middle class cannot escape, to maintain this freebie system.

I agree with you completely. All govts at state and centre level just eye the poor sections and the super rich sections…nothing about the middle or lower-middle class. Whatever sops the govt is giving to these poor people, the cost for that is extracted from us middle class. And be sure that no govt will ever tell the poor not to have babies every year…its another way of ensure that the poor will always vote for them. Just see the condition of any Indian metro city…hordes and hordes of poor people are just coming, staying on the footpath, building temporary structures, having babies and living off charity and begging, everything is free for them, right from water to food to tapped electric connection …there is no govt direction for them, there is no scheme to send them back to their villages, no compulsion on them to follow any rules and regulations, yet they recv their voters ID card and ration card without having to pay any taxes, without having to give back anything to society.

wow...which state do u belong to? Actually our state government is also providing many things like cycles , money etc but I think most people do not know how to claim or take it and from whom. They dont know where to go and ask for about the information or forms.
So, the people in need do not get while the one who has the knowledge and is related to the laws are the one whose most benefited.
I live in Bihar and our government is also providing much but we dont know where to go. Here in government offices, people mis guide others and we have to run daily for any work to be done and thus we leave it.

I am from Chennai, Tamilnadu. From what I heard, that you Chief Minister is following our governments policies. Even though you CM, has got good intentions, I do not think the corrupt officials of your state will allow him to do any good for the people. Thanks for the response.

The Bengal govt does not give any such freebies mainly because I think there is no political competition to the ruling party here. However, these populist sops are not doing any actual good to the people are they? Apart from the cycle, which is really handy considering the condition of our village roads, all the other schemes are just to distract people from the real issues of development and infrastructure.

I agree with you on the other things Sudipta, but 25 kilos of raw rice for Rs.25 to the below the poverty line people is a great thing. Today a kilo of good raw rice in Tamilnadu costs Rs.35/ and if poor people are getting a kilo of rice at Re.1, I feel all the governments should follow this.
I once again agree, that it is the middle class like us who will bear the brunt of the taxes for this subsidy. But what the heck, if the poor people are going to have 2 square meals everyday, I am ready to pay more taxes.

Yes, rice at Re 1/kg is indeed a life saver for the very poor but my question is why do a substantial chunk of my countrymen still need to have rice unfit even for the rodents! I’m sure you know what quality of rice is served…the govt has done nothing for substantial improvement of these people just so they continue casting their votes in lieu of such below-standard sops.

My first reaction when I am offered something "free" from our government is to run the other way. Face it, NOTHING from the government is ever truly "free". There is always a cost somewhere, somehow, either in the form of taxes, strings attatched, loss of liberty, loss of self sufficiency, there is ALWAYS a cost. There is an old saying here in my country, "There is no such thing as a free lunch" and it is so very true. You see, any time the government gives you something, they take something else away from you or someone else. I'll leave you with some words from one of our nation's founding fathers:
"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is also big enough to take everything you have"
