I have always been told that if you have a debit card with a Visa or Mastercard logo that you can use it wherever Visa or Mastercard are accepted.
A few months ago I was at a store only get a couple of dollars worth the stuff and I had no cash on me.Therefore I used my card and was told that they would not accept the card because it was debit and not credit.
I went home and called my debit card provider and was told that they had no control of that. And then again last night I was paying for shipping of a product, about $3 and was told that because it was a debit card they would not except it.
Has this ever happened to you? Do you know why?

They might of been mistaken and thought that you could only use it debit because most cards with the logo you can also use debit. Also it depends what you tell them, if you told them debit then that is probably why they thought so. I know for our system there are a ton of cards that we can only run as credit because the debit won't be accepted just because of the bank it is with.
But the overall thing is that this is the reason its not bad to have a credit card. Even if you get one with a 400-500 dollar limit not only is it a good thing for your credit it does help in situations like these.
But one thing to realize that with credit cards and even debit cards there are many places that refuse to run them unless you spend a certain amount because of how much the charge is to run the card.

Please note, that if it is online, you will have to mention the cvv number printed on the back, which is not available with the debit card.

hi dfollin this is really surprising because I have a debit
card with visa logo on it and have never had it turned down
on line, but maybe that is different. my lord.a debit card means theres no way the store could lose as the money is taken directly
'out of your checking Account. I would think they would like
debit cArds.wow I am glad to know some wont take them. I dont
know why but would sure like to know.

I know surprised me too.I had never had that problem online before either. But,the site put up a message that they do not accept debit cards.Just like I do not understand why I cannot buy a lottery ticket with my debit card.It comes right out of my account!

Ok..so you have to say " Run it thru as credit" on your purchases and don't say debit. That should work. As for the lottery tickets...those can ONLY be run as debit and only where they accept debit. The reason for that is that the store pays a fee for all credit purchases. He gets a commission from the lottery for tickets sold which is less than the fee he pays out on credit purchases so he'd be losing money on the deal. On debit, there is no fee to the store owner but if the store does not accept debit then...no...you can't buy lottery. Some owners just make it a policy to only do lottery with cash to prevent paying the fee and prevent having to explain it repeatedly.

This has never in my life happened to me.We use it everywhere and anywhere.
From upper scale stores to restaurants it is taken. If it has the logo you are allowed to use it.A debit card of any kind is as good as giving them cash.

I would call your bank, tell them what is going on. This is the only way you are gonna get to the bottom of this.A possible updated different card, that these people are willing to honor. I have heard of stores not taking debit for bills under 20.00 but other than that it sounds very strange
.
Hash it out with those people at the bank. Who are repeatably, putting you in a jam.

Yes i have had this happen..Here is the deal i found out..These cards you get from the bank , you can use them as a debit or credit card...Some stores will not let you use it as a debit, so in that case just use it as a credit..Using your card as a debit you must put in a pin number..you can use the same card as a credit card & it goes through just like a credit card & you do not have to put in a pin number..So these cards work both ways.....The store will usually ask you this question "debit or credit? if you do not want to use it as a debit , you can just use it as a credit..I ask my banker & that is what she told me....I went forever before i got a pin number for my card, so i used it as a credit card...I finally went & got me a pin number so now i use it both ways..Same Card...

The first card I used was a prepaid debit card, which I was advised to use.The store told me that because my name was not printed on the card, they would not accept it.I do not understand why the online site would not accept it.It is a card with my name printed on it.

was it a bank debit or a pay as you go debit?
because some of those pay as you go,like greendot you can't use in person no matter what it says on it-online only.
it's ridiculous,but they do that.

That is a little odd... Typically the only places that do the debit/credit discrimination are car rental places. Most retail stores don't bother because they figure that a sale is a sale. Some places don't accept credit, some places don't accept debit.. others only have their register set up for one and not the other. In this day and age it's rather dumb, but it does happen. You should ask the store manager or customer service WHY they don't accept debit cards. As a former business manager, I was always weary about accepting credit cards, since there are no real immediate protection features for the owner/consumer to deter theft.. while with a debit card, you typically have to enter a PIN number to access those funds or make a purchase.

What country are you in? I have a Visa Debit card from a bank in the United States, and I live in Canada. I have used that card all over Canada, and the United States, and have had no problems with it. I've never used it in any other countries though. I'll have to try it one day, and see what happens.

That has never happened to me before. I have a debit card from my bank also but they have a limit on it that can be charged in one transaction though. I don't know why when it is my money or funds that is being debited.

Even though this has not personally happened to me. I have seen a couple of incidents like this in a jewellery shop as well as in super market. When I asked the salesmen there, their answer was the machine for swiping the credit card and the debit is different and the debit card will have a Visa or Master with the name - ELECTRON mentioned in the card, and the swiping machine was different. This happened a couple of years back, and I think now, we can swipe, both debit and credit cards with the same machine.

That has happened to me. But if you tell them to run it through as a credit card and not a debit card it will go through. I've had to tell them that a few times until they believed me...also a lot of places will not use credit cards/debit cards at all if the total is under $5 because they get charged a fee everytime you use one of their cards.

You have to tell some of them to run it as a credit. Where I work...until not too long ago...we did not have the choice. When we took their debit card, I could tell at a glance if I could run it credit or not. If not...we were not programmed to take it. If you swipe your card...hit credit. If are asked whether it is a mater or visa...state master or visa. Don't tell them that it is debit. I've never had this problem so I'm guessing it is because you refer to it as a debit card....say credit. hope this helps.

You know, I have heard of this happening from other people as well. I have never had it happen to me. At least not yet. I am curious to know why a company would not take this as well. You would think, if it comes right out of the account into the company's, that it would be safer and better for the company to accept!?

I MIGHT have a solution to your problem. Whenever I use my debit card I always just tell them it's credit or select the option to use it as credit. I know within my bank if you use it as a debit then over a certain dollar amount they will charge a fee, but if you use it as credit there is no fee and much easier to use. I use mine so much as credit that I don't even know my pin number without looking. Try that the next time.
