How do you react when your teen or pre-teen's crush spends a good deal of money on them for their birthday, Christmas, or other special occasions? Do you get angry and make the gifts be returned?

There are ways to return the gifts. It may be costlier but still worth it. Give costlier gifts and spend more money in return on them. They will get the message loud and clear. :-)
