Well, I found two types of e-book online free. The first type was uncopyrighted works written around mid 19th century and before. This includes major classics and works of great writers such as Edgar Allen Poe, Aurthur Canon Doyle etc. You can get them at http://www.gutenberg.org. The second type is recent works, and there is no stable sources you can get from for free. I don't know about downloading books. but I get free books at paperbackswap dot com. If you list ten of yours book you have already read, you get a free book. then you have to pay for shipping to send those books and get a credit for another one. so you pay for the shipping to someone else and they pay for the shipping to you. so, you get free books!! It has saved me a ton of money. happy reading...

torrent sites have lots of ebooks in pdf formats. you'd need an application like utorrent or bitcomet to download these files from file sharing sites like thepiratebay.org.
