Can you sleep with the lights ON or OFF?

Hello Mylotters! I can't sleep with the lights ON. There's one time, when I have to sleep with my cousin whom I didn't know that she can't sleep with the lights OFF. So the whole night I just cover my face with my pillow in order to get through. I have a friend of mine who told me that sleeping with the lights on can cause cancer. Because having lights ON can interrupt your sleep and long term loss of sleep can lead to cancer. I don't really know how much is it. Have you heard about it? What do you think? Which do you like, lights ON or OFF?

As for me I used to sleep with the light ON when I was single. I can sleep peacefully with the light ON, it does not bring any sight effect to me at all. If I was to off the light, I tell you, I could not fall asleep. But now I have married and my partner does not want to sleep with light ON! He trained me to sleep without light. After attempt to sleep with light off for a couple of weeks, I have get use of it. Now I can sleep easily with light OFF too. So both with light and without light do not bother my sleeping any more.

Hi again, I hope your cousin will try to sleep with light OFF soon. It is better to sleep with light off if you are going to have your partner in the future. Not every one can sleep with light ON! But make sure your cousin try it out, and lets the time to tell you the outcome. Don't expert you can turn it out in just 1 day! You need to tell your cousin to have few weeks practice on that. Happy Mylotting.

Hi careguaden, I'm sorry to know that you have to sleep with your cousin who has different sleeping habit. You are still fortunate that you all are sleep in a same room for sometimes only. I could fall asleep fast and easily only with all the light off. Sometimes if my husband still indulges in his reading in the bedroom, and feel really sleepy and want to sleep then. I would sleep with a small pillow covering on my eyes When he seeing this he would either stop reading or continue to read his book in the sitting room Happy posting

Hello lkbooi, Oh, well its okay. I love my cousins anyway. Good for you that you're husband has a great common sense and he seems very understanding as well. I did the same when the lights on. I just cover my eyes with a pillow. That somehow helps me to get sleep. Have a great day!

No, I cannot sleep with the lights on. I like to sleep when it is all the way dark and quite. I think there was the only time I turned on the lights when I went to bed, it was at the hotel room, my female friend was scared so we decided to turn on the lights for our "safety".

I can't sleep either of the two. I Can't sleep when the lights are so bright because it awakens my mind and it sress me. I can't also sleep when my room is so dark. To shy to admit but sometimes I'm afraid to see ghost. I love to sleep in my room with dim lights or a light coming from out side.

Hello simonelee, Actually, I also have the same feeling like yours. Sometimes when I stay in a hotel, I have this kinda feeling of being scared that I might see a ghost. So I make sure that I have one light that's ON.LOL Have a great day!

I don't think that's really the case. I have not seen a medical article about this, and i'm the type of person that falls asleep when i can! I have heard that yes you need to get 8 hours a sleep a night, however I have also read the you need as many hours as you can get before middnight because there has been a study on this and the average person gets the best quality sleep before the hours of midnight. A few things I have picked up! But i sleep with the lights on and off, depends if i fall asleep while they are on or if i turn them off before i crash!

Yeah, you're right. We really need to have at least 8 hours sleep. Well I often sleep 11:00 pm and sometimes 12:00am so I don't able to have a long hours sleep before midnight. But so far it's good for me. Good for you that you'd able to sleep, either lights ON or OFF. Have a great day!

I sleep the light off, since I dont want to have light on, I want to sleep very well thats why I want the light is off. Since sleeping with a light can bother us. We think that is another day and we can easily wake up not on time of waking up.

Yeah, I agree with you. Sometimes when the lights ON in the middle of the night, I often get up and thought that It was 6:00 am, then hurriedly went to the shower room.LOL That's one of the reason why I don't really like to sleep with the lights ON.

I cannot sleep with the lights on. Its too distracting and too bright. I can only sleep in total darkness, not even a little light must be on. Similarly, I can never sleep during the day time with all that brightness and the noises surrounding me.

Me either, really find it hard to sleep during day time. And I am so sensitive to noise. That's why when I was working on graveyard shift. I did make sure that my room was closed and dark, I even put something on my ear. So I couldn't hear any noise. Enjoy your day!

When I was still younger, I could not sleep without the lights OFF because if the lights will be on, it feels like that the heat from the light would go straight to my face. But rather, I would just like the night lamp on, just because to see things around me. But now, I am a little bit older, I still like it the same when I was younger with regards to the lightning is concern. But what is just different is that my sleeping patterns and body clock have now been altered since that I am already working in a call center and I have the graveyard shift. So when I reach home, I always make sure that the environment in my room is really dark and there is no noise and that the room is really cool. But during the weekends (my days off), whether there is light or not, I could really fall asleep right away and even if there are lots of nice, I could still have a goodnight sleep.

Yeah, when you get used with the habit of having lights OFF it's really hard to changed even when get older. It's great that somehow you still managed to have a good morning sleep, since it's hard to sleep during day time. There's a big difference between the night sleep and morning sleep. Like even if you have 3-4 hours sleep at night, still when you get up in the morning you still feel so fresh and full of energy. Unlike when you sleep in the morning even for 6-7 hours, you feel so exhausted and tired. I don't really if it's the same with you. But that's what I'd experienced before. Anyways have a great day!

if im extremely exhausted, Im sure i could sleep with the lights on - Don't think they would distract me even more, than a full moon in the window or music playing via the speakers. Although in a normal condition, I might have problems with falling asleep with a light on - therefore I always turn the lights off - turn off my external LCD screen and any other minor light source - but leave my laptop on, for the sound it makes... well, I find it a bit soothing.

Well, it's good for you that you don't have any problem with the lights ON when get so tired. Because it doesn't work on my part. Yeah, it's good listening to music, sometimes when I find it hard to get sleep. I just listen to music and it works. Enjoy your day!

The only time I've ever slept with the lights on was when I was in the Bahama's and there were large cockroaches. They seemed to not like the light, so that was the way to get by. I sleep with some light normally, from the TV, and feel a little caged in when the room is absolutely pitch black.

Oh, that's kinda scary. I'm really scared of cockroach. Yeah, cockroach really scared of lights. I have experienced with that a couples of times. Especially when I am sleeping in an old house. Have a great day!

I prefer to sleep with the lights ON. I really couldn't sleep with the lights OFF. I usually imagine things that would only leave me scared the whole night. Switching the lights ON would keep me relax and I would sleep peacefully.

Helle careguarden!!! The same is the case with me. I can't sleep with the lights on. So that if I have to sleep with the one who can't sleep with the lights off, I will have a great problem. But now, I think I can also sleep with the lights on in some cases. For that I must not be the last one in the friends group trying to sleep. While in my room, I always make sure that the lights are off before I sleep. And about the cancer thing, I have not heard of that thing. I don't think that will really happen if you can sleep nicely with the lights on too. It is just the habit of how we have adopted. And again, its possible to change the habit with little practice... Happy mylotting...

So you don't have to worry or get bother with it. Actually,I have one response here who knows this matter. You can take read it, if you want to. It's number 32 response Have a great day!

Hello Careguarden; I sleep with the light in my bedroom on when I am sleeping alone. But when I have company then I can sleep with the light off. I heard about what you said before but I am not sure I believe that because I have always sleep with the light on when alone and I can sleep quite well and without interruption. Maybe I am used to it already.

Hello chi2nasrin, Well probably, if you don't have any problem having the lights ON, so it's okay to continue that habit. Because, I have one responses here, who said that his brother got sick because of having the lights ON when he sleep. I think it's case to case basis regarding this matter. Anyways, have a great day!

I prefer to sleep with the lights on because I'm afraid of the dark. If I could sleep with the lights off I would, but I cannot. When I leave a light on it is usually the hall light. This leaves the room in semi darkness which I can handle. I have heard that sleeping with a light on next to your bed can interrupt your sleeping pattern, but long term sleep loss that can lead to cancer, I have not heard about.

Oh, you're afraid of the dark. Haven't you tried overcoming your fears? It can be real challenging. Sleeping with a dim lights is fine than having an entire room with lights. Have a great day!

I can't sleep with the lights on, not even a nightlight. I need perfect darkness. I too have heard about the damage that exposure to too much light at night can do. It blocks melatonin which is important to regulating our sleep cycle. Melatonin is suppose to be an anti-oxidant which might explain the increase risk of cancer when you suppress it. Long term sleep restiction is also associated with an increased cancer risk. I suffer from insomnia, so I hope there are other factors involved. If a person needs light to sleep, I think a night light would be a lot better choice. This allows you to be able to see and isn't as disruptive to the body. If you have to sleep with your cousin in the future, a sleep mask would be very helpful to block the light.
