My parents are ready to put their house on the market to sell. I know they can get it sold, but there's so much competition in the neighborhood, especially several foreclosures. I think with the $8k credit be allow to first time homebuyers, there should be more buyers available. I know its a good time for investors to buy and a good time for the lenders who are selling their foreclosed properties. My question to you: Is it a good time to buy or sell in today's real estate market.

I would say now is a better time to BUY a house than sell one. I think prices are pretty low considering everything, and at least in the US, congress passed a $8,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers. Which is pretty nice if you ask me! There are also a lot of foreclosed homes on the market, and from what I've heard - buying (or renting to buy) THOSE houses are SUPER cheap!

I think it's still a good time to buy because prices are low and the foreclosure rate remains high which keeps supply high. That makes it a pretty poor time to sell. While your life is more important than just getting a good deal on a house, I wouldn't sell in this market if I could avoid it. You're right though that investors have started to buy more.

I assume you are in the United States. I understand the real estate market has been severely impacted with the recession and prices are down. I guess you can sell anything if the price is right. For people with savings who were going to buy a house anyway now is probably the time to buy. I would not like to be a seller in today's market will. I live in Canada and the real estate market has not been as severely impacted as it has in the United States. While the prices have not really gone up they have remained steady and have not fallen very much if at all. I am living in a house that I own and if the price is right I might consider selling however I am in no hurry so I may wait a few years. Hopefully by that time the price will have risen somewhat.
