Have you achieved your dreams & goals?

August 22, 2009 4:15am CST
When I left school my head was full of dreams and goals things I would achieve by a certain age. In my case these included working in a recording studio, married with children and quite a few others. But looking back I pretty much haven’t achieved any of those dreams & goals, some of which I have realised were only a passing fad whilst others I am still working towards. So have you managed to achieve any of those goals & dreams you set yourself when still at school?

Is it best to have dreams and then not achieve them or not to have them and be perfectly happy with what life hs dealt you? I would never have dreamt that I would move abroad but that' what happened years ago and I am perfectly happy with it. I wanted a child and I have one and I am now doing the job I trained to do decades ago, though Ihave done many other things in between. My dreams change with the wind and that ìs fine by me. If I had too many and they were too far fetched then I would be a miserable old doul I'm sure

Aah but mysdiana, I can't see that you can't have both, dreams to work towards but also be happy with the life you have at that time. For me without dreams and goals I would become stagnant, so to speak, but to aspire to something drives me on, which I feel is hugely important, but at the same time appreciating what you have achieved and got. You make a good point that dreams change and it is natural for many of our goals to change on a whim as the world around us changes.

Probably the two do go hand in hand and alter depending on circumstances. I didn't want to give the impression that I have neither had or have none. Nothing is further from the truth. They will come true too, just as the earlier ones did - and as for those that didn't, well I guess I really wasn't interested in making them come true

No!I haven't achieved all my dreams too.In fact I am not a person of dreaming much. But I wanted to be happy and content with what I have and all my goals are very easy to reach. But after marriage,I realize that I would have set more goals towards earning and now I am towards that.I think most of my dreams now are my wife's dreams and it needs more money only.Cheers!

Hi srganesh, many thanks for your response. You make a couple of interesting points that being that when you are married your goals/dreams become joint or sometimes in favour of your other half. But also that goals/dreams often consist of making more money, which I am sure many people share.

I have a lot of goals and dreams. After college, i was very enthusiastic about finding a job, which was one of my goals. I found a job, but because of some unavoidable circumstances i had to quit it. But for me that does not mean i failed; it actually made me feel i have reached that certain goal. One of my dreams is to be married to the man i truly love, and i am now enjoying my married life. Although know i am still working on my other goals, like putting up an internet cafe, passing the board exams, finishing my masters degree, i am hopeful that all of my goals will be realized. Its just a matter of faith and determination. I can say that,I have reached some of my goals and dreams but im still in the process with others.

I definitely agree that to achieve your goals you need to have faith and determination. Without the self belief that you can achieve things and the doggied persistance to push on when things aren't going right your dreams and goals won't just fall into your lap. Good lucking with achieving your goals and many thanks for your response.

I did have many dreams when I got out of school. Some of them I have not achieved, but many of them I have. My largest dream was to be married and to be done having children by the time I was 30. That I've achived. My daughter was born when I was 22, I got married when I was 24 and my son was born when I was 26. Another dream that I had was to go on to medical school which I haven't done. I also dreamed of having a house of my own, which we accomplished last year on February 13th. I really like seeing the dreams that have come true, I hate the dreams that won't come true, and I still have some that I am working to make come true. The biggest dream that I am waiting on to come true is to be debt free.

It certainly is good when you can take a look at your life and see all those things you have accomplished and feel content in achieving them yet still have goals to work towards. Good luck with getting debt free and many thanks for your response.

when i was young i keep telling everybody I would be a good lawyer like my dad one day. I was young that time and always thought that was easy. but I grew up and went to college and realized i wanted te be a nurse... and I did become one.... however i stpped working in the hospital for about a year now when I got soooooooooo busy with my kids and couldn't handle putting them all together. I'm a single mom and do things on my own. I cook, I dirve,, I do the laundry. I watch the kids.. i pick up the groceries... I go to the bank...pay the bills........ it's just crazy........... i decided to stay home and do a little business so I can make money yet still be able to look after the kids and all my chores. I am doing well...and it gave me the chance to pursue my writing........ I have been writing since I was in 5th grade...and I joined editorials...journalism clubs... now I am doing business and making money from the internet...it wasn't my initial plan, but I ended up this way...yet I'm happy....

true...you made a lot of good points and no one can say it better... with regards to initial plans being not the bast, i agree with you on that too... i guess i was too young before and didn't know what i wanted yet... its better this way, that i take things as they come...it's okay to plan ahead, but we would always make room for adjustments along the way.

Congratulations :o) Happiness is the key! It's strange how we often want to emulate our parents, yet by chasing that dream (that wasn't ours in the first place...) we don't end up happy. I understand how kids and housework can take over, I wish I could say the same as you, that I had managed to make my writing work for me... but I am still working hard at it... So, as I said congratulations - I am very impressed... Oh... and P.S. Our inital plans often aren't the best ones...

Hi patofgold23, I too moved a whole lot away from my initial goals. Anyways, I change my mind so often that I cant even say that I aspired to be this or that. I used to think I'd be a doctor some day. But was tooooo lazy to get into that line. However, like u, I too have reached a stage where I cant complain much about life. So it doesnt really matter if we dont get what we started for, does it? In fact, with so many modifications and additions, I think I am better off. :-)

That's a nice philosophy about achieving the best of them and I believe that if you accept that some goals may still be there even when we die then you can lead a contented life. But if you are too goal driven and it causes you to be unhappy then that's not so good.

dreams that came during sleep will never came true in real sense but the dreams and the goals which we set for ourselves, they are achieved to some extent.what the matters is your luck.luck has proved itself for a successful man who has guide his goals on the right way.i have sometimes felt that what i have dreamt the things after my gruadation will come to true or not.at school i have set some goals to achieve the medal in the class but i failed due to luck as i had fever during the exams.so setting the goals ,many of the times depends on luck

No, thankfully. It'd be a real bother to be at the top but not at the end. It leaves to much time to pursue minimal achievement.

I have many dreams, but its the matter of me getting on the right path to achieve them. So far I have been doing everything I can to achieve them. I thought I would never go back to school, but I did and now I'm on the deans list. To achieve your goals and dreams you have to believe in yourself. If you dont't, don't expect for someone else too.

I'm still working on mine, and many of them are very big. I'm impressed and proud of the things that I have achieved so far tho! :)

i could not achieved my goals, when i left school and started to work,i found that i only work for my living and don't think about my future,my goal,so when i found that i could not achieved my dreams&goals,i wasted my time to do other thing and do not finish anything,so i regret that what i do,i thought that if people have his dreams, they have energy to do it and would be easy to succeed.so i start to plan the aim and i believe that it would be realize with my dreams.

Life's twists and turns are beyond comprehension is what i feel.I set out to be sportsman i ended with a sales job.I never thought i would do a law degree but ended doing one.As a student i knew nothing of real estate and stock market but circumstances paved my entry into these fields.Though i did not achieve what i initially set out to achieve in a way i'm more or less satisfied with what i'm today. Maybe i didn't have a clear goal in the beginning and work towards it.
