Alarm Clock, Yes or No

Have noticed when I wake up to an alarm clock in the morning my day is terribly sluggish. When I wake up on my own, I feel refreshed. Guess the alarm startles me when I am sound asleep. I set the alarm this morning since I had to be about 20 minutes away to babysit our grandbaby at 6:30. Am fading fast. Anyone else have this problem in the morning?

I have the same problem too! I guess its normal. The explanation is very fundamental. Waking up after hearing an alarm clock ring is not a natural activity of your body. Our body has its own mechanization controlling our different sensations, or whatever we call those. Sleeping is one of those natural activities. Our body requires sleep to recover from heavy works. It sleeps until it feels it likes to wake up. Using an alarm clock, is the same as disturbing the natural way that our body is recovering itself. If it has not fully recovered yet, and disturbed by the alarm clock, of course, that's why we feel sluggish when we wake up. I think that's the effect of alarm clock.

When you sleep, you actually go through a few different stages of sleep. The first stage is a very light sleep. This is the part where you're sleeping, but you're not exactly aware of it. To illustrate, you ever fall asleep while watching tv, and then someone changes the channel and you tell them you were watching that and swore you weren't sleeping? That's the first stage. The second stage is a deeper sleep. Not many things are gonna wake you up in this stage. Then there's the third stage, which is REM (Rapid Eye Movement). This is where you're dreaming. (You say, you never dream, but everyone actually does. Whether or not you remember it, is a whole another story). You go through these stages several times over while you're sleeping. If you wake up during REM, you're gonna be pretty sluggish. Any other stage, you're gonna be fine. So, if you're sluggish when you wake up, it's probably because you were in the REM stage when you woke up. If you don't want to have this feeling every time, you need to regularly sleep and wake up at relatively the same time every day and sleep a good number of hours (how many, depends on how old you are). This way, your body gets use to it and soon, you won't actually need the alarm clock to wake you up everyday. Of course, you probably might want to set it up anyway just in case.

Very good response. I did know we had dreams every night but don't always remember them. Thanks so much for responding.

The problem is, whenever you wake up to an alarm, it's pushing you to wake up. Whenever you wake up on your own, you've recieved the amount of sleep that your body needs to be refreshed and rejuvenated and ready to start the day. The alarm jerks you from a comfortable sleep to get you started on your day.

Exactly. If I wake up on my own at 5 or 6, it's fine and I feel ok. Thanks for responding.

I think the best way is still waking up naturally and had a good night's rest. But alarm clocks are still very useful if you really have a hectic schedule and you always have to beat the time. Having the gadgets around is good to help us but be sure not to be too reliant on it.

I always get up as the sky become bright, in summer, it's about 5:45, while in winter I will get up after 7:30.I can wake up by myself almost everyday, and I also set the phone as the alarm clock to ring, sometimes before I wake up,or when I have already woke up, I stay on my bed waiting for the phone to know the time...I set the clock just for the exact time, but to wake me up... If you feel refreshed, that means you have a good sleep, and so you can wake up on your own, that's perfect. If you are tired in the day, you need a longer sleep,I think the clock just make you wake up too early... I have the same problem when I was a student in the high school,at that time,I have only 6 hours to sleep, and everyday I wake up,I feel sluggish,I don't want to go to the classroom at all...I want to sleep... but I can't because the alarm clock in our school can not be much noisier...At weekend,I can sleep at home, and I feel sleeping is the most important thing in my life,I can have a good rest,I can get rid of the noisy clock and enjoy sleeping... beeduzhe

That si the way I feel too. I never use an alarm clock. I do not get much sleep anyway. I hate to be woken up by someone or a clock. It ruins my day too and makes me sleepy in no time.

I never had this problem when younger. I'd set alarm and get up. Now I drag all day if the alarm wakes me from a sound sleep. Thanks for responding.

Sometimes I feel the same way to. I need to snooze for an hour or so then Im able to wake up a lot easier. I cant wake up instantly otherwise I will have a long and sluggish day no matter how many hours of sleep I got the night before waking which is why I need my snooze lol.

I never really gave it much thought. Maybe I should try the snooze and see if that helps. Thanks for responding.

I do wake up to an alarm five days a week....I should say I have it set...most of the time I am so used to waking up at a certain time that I wake up just before it goes off.....and it really doesn't affect me unless I was really sleeping hard..then I think it does shake you a bit when you are waken from a deep sleep...

I really don't like the idea of setting alarms to get up. After all sometimes it is necessary to reach somewhere early or for some other work. I always prefer to have a nice & relaxed sleep.

And that's why most of us love the weekends. No work, can sleep later and wake up on our own. Thanks for responding.

Hello Carolbee, I am agree with you, whenever the alarm clock woke me up when I was in my working life, I was like so sluggish in everthing, and the whole day is so sleepy. Hence what is do is take a nap to get refresh a little bit while I was having lunch time. When came to the weekend, which I don't need to work, I stop set of the time. But I still would wake up very early automatically , maybe this is just had become a habit. But it was rather refresh than woke up with an alarm clock. Now I am a stay at home mum, I don't need any more alarm clock. My two small kids are with me, they will wake me up. They are my alarm clock.

I absolutely agree. I try to wake up on my own but have my alarm set as a back up. I think it is just to jolting of a way to wake up. I had someone suggest getting one of those alarm clocks that gradually gets loader and loader.

well it's normal to be awakened badly in the morning from the alarm clock. In fact, if you set it, you know that you will break your sleep in order to do something, and you don't sleep tight thinking about it. And if you sleep without alarm clock you go on sleeping normally, and you wake up after a full energy recharge. Think about battery rechargers for mobiles. If you leave them 8 hours on, the mobile phone will be fully recharged, and it will resist for 500 hours in standby. But if you keep it in charge for 4 hours and disconnect it, your mobile phone has not fully recharged its energy, so it will last less than its full potential. I have problems with alarm clocks too, lol.

I find when I wake up to a soft radio station, or even the news, I feel much better than with beep, beep, beep.

I would still prefer an alarm in the morning. I am having a hard time waking up myself especially if there is a set time that I have to attend to. To remind myself to be prompt, I would set an alarm. It keeps me up to what I want to do or to what I am scheduled to do.

I have 2 alarm clocks to wake me up in the morning. Sometimes I don't even remember turning the 1st one off, so I definitely need the second one. I'm just not a morning person. Thank goodness for the alarm clock, or else I'd be late for work everyday.
