Didn't Know Her Name!

Yesterday while waiting to see the eye doctor, I noticed a lady sitting across from me reading a magazine. The receptionist called out the name "Linda." This lady stood up and then sat back down. Few minutes later the receptionist called the name "Linda" again and the same lady stood up and sat back down. Finally she called the name "Frieda" and the same lady said yes and walked over to the receptionist. Ok, I was trying not to laugh but asked myself if this lady didn't know her name...lol By the way, she wasn't a much older lady that didn't understand the difference between Linda and Frieda. Had to share this story since it was a little different. What have you seen when waiting in the waiting room or people watching in general anywhere? Please share.

Good thought. Didn't think about that one. Didn't see hearing aids and she was very alert. Thanks so much for responding.

Gona agree with that one about the similar endings on the names. That's happened to me a few times in a waiting room. They always call out the first and last names and some of them will be so close in sound.

Perhaps she was seeing the doctor because of some hearing problems, but it was an eye doctor... Well, I guess she was just too obsessed with her reading that her mind was not focused when she heard the name called. It sounded similar though when one didn't really pay attention. I just couldn't recall if I have observed something ridiculous while waiting... Hmmm... but I did remember what my sis told me while she was waiting in line to check in or something and there was one guy digging his ears with the car key and then smelled it!

Yeah that was pretty funny carolbee. I was thinking she must have either been hard of hearing or preoccupied, but I noticed that some others in the thread mentioned that too. Sometimes, I get so lost into a daze in my own world that even when someone asks me what my name is, I actually have to think for a minute. So maybe she came out of a daze and thought, "Linda? oh wait a minute, what's my name again?" LOL xoxo Cyne

Your response is funny. She was reading a magazine so maybe she was really involved in an article! Thanks for responding.

I think she must so concentrate on her maganzine that she didn't listen to clear in the first two times. maybe she is too old to hear clearly!

She was only a couple of years older than myself. Think she was engrossed in her reading. Thanks for responding.

Haha that is funny thing to happen with someone. In my view she might be busy with her work and when the receptionist suddenly called a name she thought it could be her name and after listening completely and then thinking over it, she reacted that no it's not my turn now :P lol and after sometime when Frieda was called then but obvious she had to move as she listened and thought over it clearly :D

I am a person who cannot boast of good observation skills Carolbee.Very rarely I notice people around me and I would be in my own dream world.THis is while walking and if I go to some place too I would have some thoughts in mind that would take predominance.I would look at the board in a clinic and get involved in reading or something else.On the other hand if it is some child then I would just keep looking at the little one's pranks.

I am exceptionally observant so this is why I see these things happen. I do find "funny" in many things I say and do and what others say and do. Thanks for responding.

I took my granddaughter for lunch to McDonald's one day and there was a lineup...well they give you your reciept and they call out what you have....a guy went up and picked up the bag of food that actually belonged to the person who had just be in front of him...I mean they call out what the order is....I thought....can't he even remember what he ordered?

Funny story. So did the next person in line get what the guy before him ordered? That could be a big mess. Thanks for responding.

Maybe one was an alias. Some people change their names to hide the fact that they are abusing the medical system.

That's another idea but can't see visiting an eye dr. to abuse the system. Really don't know what it was all about but it was funny from a stranger's view. Thanks for responding.

It could be that she is a person who chronically has her name mispronounced and is hoping that she will be picked to go up next and get it over with... Linda and Frieda are not that far apart as they have the same word ending... It may be that she either distrusted the receptionist's ability to get her name right or that somehow she became distracted by her own thoughts each time and awoke out of her thoughts soon enough to hear that "da" ending... I know one person named Paul who goes into a Starbucks and often gets called Bob... We have not been able to figure this one out. I have an eight letter last name which begins with "Red" and as it gets mispronounced often I have taken to responding when anyone even comes close to saying those letters if someone is calling out last names... This too could result in this stand up sit down type of behavior.

Good theory. My maiden name was very hard to pronounce. As a result I answered to everything because it was easier that way. Thanks for responding.

Hi carilbee, that sounds a bit funny but could be that she was a bit hard of hearing? Tamara

Hi carol! Thanks for giving me my laugh of the day! I really am lmao right now trying to picture this woman standing up and deciding if her name was Linda or not! I don't know how you kept from laughing after the second time and definitely not after she finally decided her name was Frieda! That doesn't sound like Linda to me! I'm still laughing while I'm typing this! Thanks again!

It really was terribly funny. It was one of those things that you had to be there! She looked healthy and I'm not trying to make fun of her. She wasn't that much older than I am. Thanks for responding and glad you got a good laugh from this discussion.

Maybe she is not well,, These things happen,, and probably the way u call a name,,pronunciation,, may cause that,, do u agree?

As one member mentioned here it could be she only heard the "da" because she wasn't paying attention. Thanks for responding.
