In my store, the German mix is in the potato section (with powdered mashed potatoes, in other words) and the Jewish mix is in its own little section with the kosher foods. I like them with a little salt and either sour cream, cottage cheese or apple sauce. But my husband and the rest of the family eat them with sugar.

I make em all the time and that;s exactly what you do, Shred the potatoes Like 3 or 4 for 12 to 14 of them, dice up 1/4 of an onion add an egg, 1 tablespoon flour a couple table spoons of milk add salt and pepper, mix it all together in a bowl. heat on high frying pan, I use left over bacon grease grease or oil. Fry em up load en with sour cream and pig out! I can eat 4 to 6 of them!

I have never made them before. I have had potato pancakes from Denny's once but that isn't the same as the potato cakes. I went in search of recipes and here is what I found..hope they will help in what you are searching for.

I have heard of potato cakes also and have ate them before too. I think all you have to do is take the left over mashed potatoes and scoop you out some and mash them with your hands, into a patty. Spray a frying pan with cooking oil and fry them until you get a light golden crust on the outer edge on both sides. Make sure your potatoes are not too runny though. You should be able to make a patty out of them.

I tried that and it just didn't work. But maybe my mashed potatoes were too soft. I've now learned you have to add, at least, an egg. Who knew?

So I've heard the term shredded potatoes a few times now. How do you shred potatoes . . . you mean like hash browns?

POTATO CAKES ARE GOOD FOOD. It's a good way to use up leftover creamed potatoes. U just add an egg, a little flour & sometimes i will grate a little onion in them. U make them into little balls, i always flatten mine out, put a little oil in a skillet , let it get warm & drop your potatoes cakes in the oil. let them brown on both sides & after cooking for a few minutes u have potato cakes. they are good w/any meal even breakfast.

"Potato cakes," pr "potato pancakes" are flat cake-like things made of potato bits (kinda like a big flat tater-tot, and are made with potato bits, and some kind of oil to hold them all together. Jewish potato pancakes are called latkes. Also, McDonalds "hashbrowns" are what could also be called a potato cake, as the hashbrown is in one solid piece, as opposed to little bits like tater tots.

. . . I can start making potato cakes. Thanks, my friend. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend.

Yep, potato pancakes. They are quite tasty. Usually I make a mixture of potatoes, egg, chives, sage and flour (though its even better to put onion and bacon bits in the mixture). Usually the cakes are fried on the skillet, deepfried or from time to time you can bake them. When baking, make sure to have a thicker mixture as thinner mixtures will just run everywhere on the baking sheet (or have an appropriate bakeware item for the job.)
It'll be somewhat different with mashed potato leftovers but still doable (plus you skip part of the mixing step since the potatoes are already mashed).

Here is a very simple and delicious recipe for potato cakes. My kids love them. http://www.faqs.org/docs/consumer/recipes/potato-cakes.html Its a traditional Irish dish. There are also a lot of variations to this too. You can add almost anything to these to make them different. Sometimes I add some cooked bacon, or some chopped onions, or cheese. :)

Potato Farl would be another term for potato bread..I forgot that one! The Soda bread I mentioned would also be known as a Soda farl,so that would be a local bread related term..

This would be what I'd know (In Ireland) as Potato Bread-There's something similar in Northern Ireland AFAIK that's called "Fadge" which I'm not sure if I've ever tried..Potato Bread, sometimes known as Spud Bread,is an essential part of the "Full Irish Breakfast",(or a "Full Fry" for short.. it includes Bacon,Sausage,Egg(s) cooked Your way (usually Fried!)Tomato, mushrooms,Black and White Pudding,Potato Bread, and some SODA Bread (which is another discussion!)
)..
Some Truck Stops and Roadside Cafes offer what they call the "All Day breakfast",which is basically a Full Fry,and some places add baked beans to this..It's jokingly referred to as a "Heart Attack on a Plate"...Can't think why....

Good info.... but I have never heard of that. The only thing that sounds familiar to what you have discribed are potato farls but I have never heard of them served with a full irish before. :)

I'm just wondering about the ingredients and method. I just can't see flippin' them like pancakes.
