Two houses in my street have their decoratiosn up already. I think thats awful and I hate it so much! We decorate about the 17th or 18th of December, end even then I would prefer to do it on Yule eve and only keep it up until Christmas is over, so maybe a week in total.
What do you think, have you seen houses lit up already?

We don't have thanksgiving in the UK so the major festival before Midwinter for many people is Guy Fawkes night (nov 5th), I think thats why they put them up early, but I wish they wouldnt

I'm already sick of all the decorations thanks in part to all the department stores that have had their decorations out since before Halloween. I don't want to look at that stuff until maybe just before Thanksgiving, but to start putting it out in the middle of October is just rediculous. By the time Christmas really does roll around, I'm tired of it and just want it to be over.

I completely agree that the shops are very naughty about pushing it too early

Well, personally I celebrate Yule more than Christmas, and to me its about having a big party to encourage the metaphorical return of the Sun during the dark days immediately around teh solstice. It feels wrong to me to start making it all bright too early or the magic of the occasion is lost. For those that are Christain though, its celebrating Christs birth, and you don't normally light birthday candles and put up balloons a month before your birthday party do you?

I think if you enjoy the decorations, put them up! Regardless of when we put them up, we are all celebrating the birth of Jesus. I start my Christmas train layout very early because of the time it takes to perfect it. it's too much work for a few days of enjoyment.

Why on earth do they do it so early thogh? I just can't fathom what posesses them. Their electricity bill must be sky high apart from anything else!

All the streets in my neighbourhood already have tinsel christmas trees and stuff on them- it's way too early. Christmas season for me starts at the beginning of December. The funny thing here is that we have Christmas Parades starting the middle of November.

I haven't seen any houses lit up, but I agree it's WAAAAY early. They started putting out Christmas stuff in Dollar Tree after the 4th of July! Sheesh, wait till after Thanksgiving, at least. I know that I am not even thinking of Christmas yet.

I think its okay to put them up, but to actually turn them on, no.
Cause you want to put them up before you get to rushed and if it snows in your area...then before the snow really starts to fly.
I think the first weekend of December is okay, that is usually when we do it.
