To eat meat or not?

Hi there fellow mylotters! I was wondering why people become vegetarians. I have a friend who has been a vegetarian since she was 14 and that was nearly 26 years ago now. I have forgotten what her reason was now for becoming one, I think it was because she disagreed with the killing of animals and it has always been her way of life since. I have another friend who is also a vegetarian but cooks meat for her family but I have never asked her why she chooses to not eat meat. I don't have a problem with it, I am just interested to know what some people's reasons are for being a vegetarian. Are you a vegetarian? Do you know someone who is? What is your/their reason for being one? What about vegans? What do vegans eat?

Since I'm a Pure Non-Veg, I really can't support anything other than non-veg. No other food in the world can give you a better taste than that of Non-Veg dishes

You strictly eat meat, or do you have vegetables? Taste usually comes from the seasoning, which you can grille on a nice tofu steak.

Hi Humbug25, I don't find any reasons why a vegetarian can't stay as an vegetarian..All the essential nutrients of a healthy living of mankind is very much available in various veggie foods, and so according to me friend, that there is no point in wondering why people remain vegetarians or become vegetarians. At no point in my life time that i have touched non-vegetarian food, and i confirm friend that i am hale and healthy. Take care dear and have a great day.

Hi ya saivenkaat802003 I do understand that all nutrients can be found in non-meat foods but I just wondered why people would choose to be one or if it is a matter of having to due to health. Thank you for your response

Humbug - I think it could be a combination of health reasons AND doing the morally correct thing. If one can minimize suffering in this world, and put healthier food in their body, I am sure the would opt for that over the alternative.

People have many reasons to become vegetarians. Some people suddenly develop a fondness for animals and feel that they can't eat them anymore. Others become vegetarians in a desperate bid to lose weight. I recently turned vegetarian. I suddenly developed an allergy to all types of meat and fish. Now, I am wondering what to eat. I was an expert non vegetarian cook. Now, I have to learn some vegetarian dishes. :) And I am not really fond of all vegetables. Cheers and happy Mylotting

The place where i live one can find a great number of people who do not eat meat. For them the first reason is that its against their religion econdly they dont like to be cruel to animals, also some people say that it could change our soft nature. But am not a vegetarian.

Vegetarians than meat-eaters better able to withstand long hours of hard work, which was almost three times the endurance of the comparison; and return to full fitness from the fatigue of time, vegetarians is about one-fifth of meat-eater. This is the scientists of various athletes and manual workers by the findings.

For me I guess it was just a phase I went into which lasted a couple of years, I don't think it was the fact of killing animals, I think I went right off meat, I had been ill and I just lost my taste for meat and so it didn't really bother me, it was strange at Christmas though everyone tucking into turkey and pork and I had fish! So I was a vegetarian rather than a vegan. It never bothered me, and I didn't miss it, until my ex decided to cook bacon one morning and the smell of bacon, I just succumbed, I couldn't resist it and do you know that was the best bacon sandwich I had ever tucked into! And that was my short term temporary vegetarian phase which I quickly grew out of it, now the thought of reverting back to vegetarianism would never appeal to me and being as I go to the gym, I need all the meat I can eat ;0)

Hey wolfie34 I think you have to have a good reason to be a serious vegetarian and stand by what you believe. Obviously because you just simply go off meat or give it up for health reasons then that is a different kettle of fish altogether. My friend who has been a veggie for so many years never preaches and is never in your face about it. As far as I know she has never gone on any protest marches either!! Hey ho!! Thanks as always hun X

If you were eating fish, you were not a vegetarian. While vegetarians eat animal products such as milk and even eggs, they never eat animals that were killed to eat like fish.

Wolfie - you know the have vegan bacon and vegan sausage now? A high protein diet actually causes humans to urinate more calcium, and that leads to osteoporosis. Not an easy workout with brittle bones. You can always find all sorts of meat substitutes at a vegan or healthfood store, but I found a recipe, too. And, tofu is high in protein, too. Human really needs only 30 grams of protein a day which can easily be consumed in their daily allotment of fruits and veggies. http://www.recipezaar.com/Vegan-Bacon-148899 This helps in three ways: you spare an animal his/her life, you get the bacon taste you can't resist, and you still get a high dosage of protein, to help assist with your gym workouts. Come on, make the pledge, and go veg. I guarantee your workouts will be that much better and much more effective. When animals run through your bloodstream, it does block the oxygen flow.

hello Humbug25, Yes, I know someone who is a vegetarian and never eats meat at all. And because of her determination I admire her so much. She does eat fish and vegetables only. She is the mother of my sister-in-law. Once when they visited us in our place, that's the time I've learned that she never eats meat. She's already more than 60 years old. She's so healthy that she doesn't have any maintenance at all. I wish I am like her, so disciplined and determined.

I am vegetarian and I also like chicken meat, my mother her high blood disease recurrence after eating goat meat. After looking that, I'm sure meat not always good for our health. People say vegetables contain iron substance and lots of protein in it.

Sure they can - I had a vegan version of steaks and it was delish! And you can make a little kabob out of it, with portobella mushrooms. I feel sorry for the meat eaters who have never gotten to explore the vegan adventures. I think you should try it out for 30 days. :-)

I am not a vegerarian, and I love to eat meat. As far as I am concerned, vegetarians become vegerarians because they love animals and want to protect them from being harmed or being killed, or think that all lives are equal. Have a nice day!

well in my case i think the less harm you can do the better. there are creatures i will kill but don't like it. something as easy, at least here, as changing your diet does not seem a big thing.

I'm not a vegetarian but i do respect vegetarian . I think not to eat meat is good for our bodies , at least not too much. By far i cann't resist meat which i think is still attractive .One of my friends became a vegetarian after her dog was sick. She prayed that she would be vegetarian if her dog could recover from this heavy disease . Finally her dog really recoved and since then she is a strict vegetarian.

I have a friend who is a Vegan... she eats nothing or drinks nothing at all that comes from an animal... no meat at all, no cheese, yogurt, eggs, milk.... none of that stuff... and Being Vegetarian isnt something i frown apon but it isnt a good choice at all... like seriously... if you do not eat meat and drink milk ur body wont beable to handle the taste of meat or anything if it is slipped into your food at all, because my friend is now like i think 25 and she had a little beef broth in her soup and her stomach couldnt handle it and she BLEH everywhere.... Also in conclusion most vegans are very weak and most of them dont have the energy to walk around or anything cause their bones and muscles will hurt all the time.

Hi there Ace_Anime Hmm now that is interesting though I think that there are a fair few ammount of vegans and vegetarians that would disagree with you. Thanks for your response
• United States
30 Aug 09
I would be one of them that disagrees with you. When people eat cheese, they are eating cows milk, part of the calf's stomache, and it is allowed to ferment into mold, and the butterfat along clogs you up so bad. When people eat pizza, they feel greasy inside, and they, quite literally, are. I listed in another post here that drinking milk actually causes you to urinate out more calcium, and it is really hard to walk with brittle bones. And, meat is not meant to be digested by human bodies. We don't have the stomach acid to break it down as it putrefies in our colon, and it just rots there. It can cause serious infection, disease, and obesity and cancer. Being animal free helps your blood flow with nothing clogging your arteries. It is the healthiest option. YOu have to be sure to eat a balanced diet. You don't just eat apples all day. You find the right combinations of fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts, etc, and work it into a feesible diet plan.

I am not a vegetarian and will never be a vegetarian because I love to eat meat. But as I observe, there are lot of people like me who likes to eat meat but changes their mind because of the health problems that meat causes to them. So I think that is one of the reasons why they became a vegetarian.

Hello virgonian1988 I think there are alot of reasons as to why people become vegetarians and I wondered if meat eaters are in the minority yet or not. I think a lot of people turn to vegetarianism due to health issues you are right. We are a meat eating family though we don't it a lot really. Many thanks for your response

Virgonian - why do you like meat? Is it the taste? There are several healthier alternatives that won't clog your arteries or rot in your colon inviting cancer-causing bacteria and fungus. They have many different options like veggie burkers, tofurkey, vegan steaks, vegan shrimps, and often they taste better than the read deal. When you eat meat or animal products, the animal fat (even found in their lean muscle) stays in your body for four hours. People tend to eat every few hours, and it will stick in your body, find more fat cells to conglomerate with, and it could really cause health risks. If it clocks an artery to your heart, you will have a heart attack. If it clogs an artery to your kidney, you will sustain kidney damage. It it clogs an artery to your brain, you will have a stroke. I recommend watching this, I have posted it elsewhere on mylot. It shows how eating animal effects your body and makes you more susceptible to cancers, disease, and obesity: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=143B0957C75B09BE&search_query=a+diet+for+all+reasons

I can't be a vegan. I gotta have my cheese and eggs! I do eat a mostly vegetarian diet. I got very sick several years ago because of my gall bladder. While I went for a long time without eating anything substantail I figured that after the gall bladder was removed I could just add back into a diet the healthier options. That's what I did. I have varied some, but stay pretty close to a high protien vegetarian diet! I do it to feel better... and that i do!

Hello Humbug, this is an interesting discussion. I know some of my friends, only a few of them, is vegetarian. In fact I don't like to become a vegetarian, but I never object others people to do so. It is their decision to choose what food to eat. I know some choose to become vegetarian due to the religion, and some is for the health issues, and some might thinks of disagree on killing animals. For me, I eat both vegetables and meat. I think it is important to get nutrient from different sort of food.

I am a meat eater and I enjoy the taste of meat. I know that a lot of people back home are vegetarian because they believe in reincarnation. Thus they do not want to kill an animal which could have been a human in their past lives.
