Here is mine. Well, each year - I get almost 10 calendars, and not enough walls to hang them on. (I am trying - ask mylot admin). lol. About 50 percent of them are glossy and another 3 are printed on both sides. There are about 2 that have do not have anything on reverse and can be used to make note books. Glossy ones I like to use as covers for my books (we spent fortune in school to cover our text books and note books with brown paper), and the ones that are blank - I have wanted to collect such calenders at the end of each year and cut these into size of some note books, and pass them on to children who cannot really afford to buy the fresh ones. They could use it to paint or do their math calculation. Do u think this will work? Let me add - it will feel odd asking my neighbors to hand over their used calendars - but I think I can manage it. Do share ur ideas.

What a great idea about using the extra calendars! I recycle paper grocery backs and newspapers by using them for gift wrap. With a pretty bow or tied in some colorful ribbon, they look really nice. When I am done with books I'm not going to read again, or when finished with magazines, I pass them on to others to enjoy. Junk mail makes good "scratch pads" for children or adults. And if you buy ice cream in the plastic "buckets" they make good pots for plants after putting a few wholes in the bottom to allow for drainage. And the lids are a good thing to set the new pot on. Plastic containers that hold butter, cottage cheese, etc., can be washed and make a good way to store leftovers, or to freeze berries for the freezer. They are also handy for sending leftovers home with others, since they don't have to worry about returning them. Karen

That is great. Unfortunately, we Indians are so smitten by plastic bags - we dont get paper grocery backs! We sell the newspapers here, so it is recycled anyway. Books and magazines, - yeah I would like to give away. Nobody who likes to read! Junk mail idea is excellent. I am going to use that. Ice cream buckets is also very good. How come I never thought of that. We get paint boxes. Thanks for shedding light on this. So far I have been using them as waste bins. And I used to think what a beautiful waste bin. I gave away so many to my maid and watchman! Plastic containers is a something even I am doing. Thanks Karen, especially the Junk mail idea. My maid asked me the telephone number this morning and I had to pull out something from a good writing pad. It never occurred to me! I will have "scratch pads" now. :-) And more plants as well! Thank u for the lovely ideas. :-) Have a nice day. :-)

nice idea there. i have used an old desk calendar which very beautiful designs and "recycled" them into book markers. i had them laminated and they look very nice. i gave some of them to friends. i am always into recycling of things. when i was in my elementary grades, i used to practice my sewing skills and i have made out my own short pants from the lower portion of denim pants of my father. the old house dresses of my grandmother and mother were made into skirts or my dresses. i just add some modern thing on them and they look as if they were originally mine. i don't throw away my outgrown dresses. i re-sew them to fit my daughter. i also sew together extra cuttings of clothing materials and i have made blankets from them. anything that i see is old and left lying idle and unused, i always find a new way to recycle them. just last week, we "ransacked" our clothing cabinets and found so many unused clothing. those that i found that are really of no use to us anymore, i placed them in boxes and give them to relatives in the province. the next person will be happy to have them ... these clothing are still very usable and still look new. the tetra pack tinfoil wrappers of juices are kept and saved. we sew them together and we made bags out of it. lots of things can be done by recycling. it just needs an imaginative and artistic mind to spark that enthusiasm.

I liked the idea of book markers out of old calenders. :-) I never thought of that one - and laminated too! They would look as good as new! And u have got me thinking. May be I can laminate some of the good calenders and use them in shelves instead of replacing them with papers. That way dusting will be a whole lot easier! Thanks a million for this laminating idea. And tetrapak, can they really be sewn together? I didnt know that! I have always discarded them. :( Thanks for responding. Learnt something here! :) Have a good day. :-)

Hi moneymakingtoday, that was an unusual idea with leftove wood. :) Must try it the next time. But do tell me, we have wood planers coming up with so much wasted wood, thin sheets of wood that curl up. Do u have any idea how u could use them? And like this, we have coconut trees. At the base of the leaf, we get a neat matted bit. I always wonder whether i could put it to some artistic use someday. May be u can come up with some idea. Thanks once again for adding new ideas. U know these are always welcome. :)

yes, tetra packs can be laid flat and sewn together. i saw school children here using these bags and they are durable! plastic rice sacks ... do u know that that is what i used in making hawaiian grass skirt for my daughter when she was yet in the elementary grades and had enrolled herself in dances? well, she had the most beautiful skirt as the strands were finer than the usual straw made into skirts ... the hawaiian grass skirts were sold by their teacher but i didn't buy from her and instead made it myself for my daughter. that also gave the teacher an idea what material to use the next time. another one which u might be interested ... the leftover pieces of wood cuttings, maybe from ur house renovation can be used into artistry. all u need to do is cut it to form a shape u like, leaving the base and top portions flat ... i use them as vase stand. paint it with color u like then u can use it as vase stand. choose a color which will complement any flower vase color.. try it!

The notebooks are a great idea. I'm sure there's many children out there in need of supplies. Maybe you could also start a fundraiser to sell your handcraft to raise some money for school supplies. Random thought there. What my mother did when I was younger was use brown paper bags to wrap my books since it was required for school. When the school year was over, we'll just recycle the paper. Maybe the neighborhood children would need their schoolbooks wrapped?

Yeah handcraft is also on my mind. :-) Actually - we buy rice in plastic woven bags. I could cut them into table mats and do some cross stitch may be. Thanks for letting me think in this direction. And that brown paper bags idea is also very good. Unfortunately we dont get bags like that in India. So that form of recycling does not happen. :( Thanks for responding. I really appreciate u reminding me that handicraft thing. I will try this one out definitely, and if possible let u know the outcome. :-) Have a great day. :-)

I wonder sometimes if what I do can be called recycling. My clothes are most of them antiques. Yesterday, I had to go to the doctor, so I had to dress up. I wore a white sweater that is about 20 years old at least, a very elegant woolen pant (15 years old but I changed the style a couple of years ago)and a beautiful knitted jacket I bought 7 years ago. Put earrings, donned some nice perfume and there was the princess I collect run panties and make soft nice pillows. And I ALWAYS cook at home from scratch so leftover are another dish. I use the dog food bags to put the cuttings from the garden that are too hard to beciome compost. I remember when kids were little I covered text biooks with saved paper from Christmas. I roined and they were as good as new.

Oh dear, doctor! I hope u r alright now. I tend to use clothes completely as stocking old clothes is an issue in my tiny apartment. :( Therefore, I buy a new one when I have an old one to retire for good. The old ones are cut into pieces and used for dusting and mopping. Cooking at home - me too. :-) No luck there with dog food bags. :( But I did try growing koleus in milk bags, and so also corriander. Comes out just fine. But the bag looks odd. I got a nice idea from the first post and am cursing myself that I never thought of it like that. Christmas papers - I never ironed the papers but I did reuse them again as gift wrappers. :-) Thanks for sharing. Its been a pleasure to know people like u. Happy travelling. :-)

Before, it had been the practice in our family to re-use the unused pages of our notebook. What we do is we gather them and tie them using a thread. In that way, we can same money for buying another notebook. We also make use of the plastic containers of sold juices as our dispenser for drinking water.

I'm not sure either if you can call it recycling what I do. I reuse everything i can at least twice. Clothes I change around to make them current to the style, any type of plastic containers I use for growing plants in my garden. Painting if I don't like them anymore I paint over them and make something different. A friend of mine if going to have a little baby girl soon so currently I'm making little fluffy outfits for the girl out of leftover materials and I use some of my old soft sweaters.

Ok - that is a nice way to use clothes. Plastic containers is something Karen suggested in the first post. U know I keep getting so many of them. I have handed them over to my servants! They use them to stock water. I always thought they were too white. So it never crossed my mind that I could use them to grow plants. My terrace is empty. I just have to line them up one by one and have plants all over. :-) And u have just added another wonderful thought to that. Painting them. Can we really do that? I mean - plastic outside - I thought we had to stick something on it to make it appear beautiful. And that idea of using left over materials is also wonderful. In our country the new born is not made to wear new clothes. This is actually an old fashioned way to ward off evil spirits, who will feel envious or something. I dont exactly know. But that is the way it is. :-) Folks here will be delighted with such ideas. :-) Strangely - we are a poor nation, but I find people from other countries dont hesitate in recycling, whereas our people are not open to such ideas. They would wait for old dress of another baby. Such waste of resources! Thanks for sharing. :-) Have a good day. :-)

If you want to paint plastic containers you would need to use special paint. Stray paint will work well however I'm not sure if the spray paint would be as inexpensive for you as it is for me. What I have done with plastic containers I covered the with wallpaper and used the same glue which is used to stick the wallpaper on the wall. It will slight around at first because the plastic don't have a rough surface. What is nice about using wallpaper it is a nice way to match the things in your house. If your flower containers are covered with the wallpaper from the next room and you have an open floor plan it pulls the room together nicely.

I also used glossy and beautiful paper from old calendar and magazines as covers for books. I also used them for craft project. Tons of things can be made if you look good enough. The blank pages from old books can be compile and bind and you make new book out of it. You can make pretty cover for it and your children might love to accept it. They can do whatever they want with it (though I doubt they'll use the pretty 'new' book only to calculate, it might even become their diary)

Recycling papers and plastics can be artistic. Create new boxes, bags or even pencil holders with your children. You get to teach them that trash is ART.

I use the extra calenders for each of my kids. This way they can each see what their schedules are with out getting confused by all the miss match on mine. We also use the pictures in collages. I like scenic ones for big pieces and animals are my kids favorites.

I do what most do and keep my plastics and papers and garbage separated into bins. My apartment doesn't make recycling an easy task (the only place to recycle are at the dumpsters around the back of the building) but its definitely worth the trip to help the world. I don't usually reuse items, but it seems like a great way to be artistic and sen a positive message to visitors or children. I will definitely look into following your footsteps. Keep it up!
