Keep it out of landfills they say!

I have been a member of my local freecycle group for nearly 2 years now and I have most certainly picked up some great unwanted items from others and got rid of my unwanted stuff too. The moderators of the site constantly remind members that it is not a site for begging or borrowing and is to be used to stop items from going to the landfills/tips/junk yards. I have noticed over the years that people get rid of unwanted pets on there and I think this is wrong. It is not like someone will take an animal to one of those places to get rid of them because they would be reported. I think a seperate site could be set up for such a thing. Do you think it is wrong to advertise an unwanted pet on a recycling website?

I think it is a whole lot better than dropping them off in a field or taking them to a shelter where they will most likely be euthanized.

Hi ya dawny I do see your point but here in the UK you would really be in a lot of trouble if you were caught dumping animals in a field. I think a seperate website could be set up for this sort of thing! Thanks dawny

I really think if you take on a pet, unless you are in dire straits, you should keep the pet. It's a lifetime commitment in my book. But too many people give up pets for the stupidest of reasons. But anyway yeah, a separate website is not a bad idea!

in our country there is no law yet that prohibits leaving your animals in deserted place if you want to get rid of them like stray cats that keeps going to your place to poo and scavenging your garbage for food. i don't like leading cats to other places so they won't bother me. but some people do that. cause we don't have much animal rights here. we don't treat pets with right like humans do. unlike in other progressive countries where animals have the rights too.

I belong to freecycle too and it is a great site for recycling things. It kind of makes me uneasy when I see people giving away animals on that site too. The best place for that would be the Humane Society. They are best suited for that. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

Hi ya kellyjeanne Trouble with humaine societies/RSPCA is that they are overwhelmed with 'clients' and are too desperate to rehome them that they have to destroy them instead. Thanks

I don't know but it's an interesting question. Since it is a living animal, but someone doesn't want it so they are sort of recycling the animal, it might fit. Probably craigslist would be better to give away animals. I have noticed that freecycle is basically just to give away free stuff where we are, perhaps that is why the animals are listed there.

I'm not quite sure how you recycle a pet Humbug. Frankly I think that it's better than casting them loose which the squaddies on Salisbury Plain have a reputation for. I'm a member of Freecycle too. To date I have only got rid of a school desk but at least it went to a good home and was better than being dumped in the Tip or burnt.

Hi ya p1kef1sh I do see your point but that is what the RSPCA is for isn't it. I don't think that the type of people get that get rid of pets on freecycle seem to be the type that would dump their pets but then I could be wrong, I usually am haha . I once got a car from freecycle, with 2 months MoT and tax!! Cheers p1key

I have never seen pets on our local freecycle, but do on Craigslist. I think it is better to give away an unwanted pet, but do not think freecycle is the place for it.

Hi ya Barbietre People sometimes ask for pets on our local site too and it just doesn't seem right to me somehow. Thanks

In my opinion, starting a new web page would be the best bet. It gives a dedicated place for the users to share their thoughts and give feedbacks and may be even take actions to improve how things are done now. Forums like these mostly only can help you in sharing your thoughts and its mostly not a focussed one on any particular issue.
