I was a graduate student in xi'an jiaotong university in china. A few months my tutor told me that there is a chance to go to a university of horoshima, japan to do some research work for three months. I think this is a good opportunity to living in a completely new courtry for me so I apply this project and succeed. Now I was living in japan more than one month, my research goes vell. But the main problem living here for me is that I can't speak japanese(I communite with the colleague in our office in english). Every day when I finish my work,I don't know what to do and I have no friends here and feel really lonely. Can anybody give me some suggestions about how to kill this free time in such a unfamiliar country. Thanks!

I do think the best thing to do is to check some really nice spots in japan wherein you could meet new friends and at the same time to have a place you could hang out to. For sure, there are people out there whom you could share your interests, maybe a foreign also who's having a vacation there that speaks your language. Having fun and exploring the new place you're in is a nice thing to do when you are away from home. And myLot is an awesome place too! :)

maybe if you took some classes to learn how to speak the language that would really help you, Not right away but i am sure you could learn a few basics right away in order to communicate..That would be really hard to not be able to talk with anyone...

LEo, my advice to you is learn about the language little everyday. although you can speak english it is still more appropriate you will learn japanese language a little. It takes time before you will have a friends in a foreign place, I hope there will come to you in earlier time. It will only make you sad if you are not doing some effort to learn about their language and their culture too. How to kill time of course, learn about the language a little. Try to buy a book and read some of anime comics. Be friends on one of the japanese you will meet, ask for help on them to teach you the basic of your language. Little by little you will learn it I know, just learn to like it and you will love it in time. Hope you will enjoy your stay there.

There are a lot of foreigners in Japan, you can always go to an English center and find some. Also, you can try and learn a little Japanese as well, it's really fun. And Chinese isn't that far off from Japanese sometimes. (I speak both so I should know) It's not too hard to adjust. You can learn in fun ways too like watching Anime with english subtitles or listening to japanese music. OH! And make sure to visit Harajuku. You might not understand what they're saying, but it's a lot of fun there. And there are a lot of tourists who go there so you just might run into someone who can be a friend. Be careful though!

As to your question about what will you do if you living a unfamiliar country, go native. You are actually in a great position to learn the language and culture. You just have to be willing to try. I use to live in Japan (3 times) and when I first went there I did not know much of anything. But I started to learn greeting, then forced myself into shopping situations, all for the purpose of learning. The Japanese have a great train system so there is no reason not to get out and about. There are lot of places to visit, temples, shrines, parks, museums, art galleys, and the music seen is just wonderful. You can find all genres. I found the Japanese very helpful and friendly especially if you try to speak the language (but can't do it well). I also use to go to game center to play poker. This also helped me with the language. I got to see a soccer game with England against Argentina. Hope this helps you a little. Finally, above all, make a friend. The Japanese are good people and life long friends. My dearest friend is a Zen Buddhist monk. I met him before he became a monk. We have been friends probably longer than you have been alive. Genki de. Genki o dashinasai.

I really appreciate your kindness. YES! I am in a great position to learn the language and culture, why don't I make use this distinct opportunity to know more about japan. I really like the scene. And the university of hiroshima is in the surrounding of forest and has a park not far from the university called jingshan park. The life here is really peaceful, fresh air ,blue sky and white cloud, birds flying on your head. I should enjoy all these things. Thanks god and thank you!

I think that you are very lucky to get a chance to live in another country for a while I have lived in other countries myself, and I find it really interesting to get to know a new country. If I were you I would spend my free time on sightseeing, and I would visit different parts of the city and the area.I would simple walk around and look at the people, the buildings etc, listen to the sounds and the feel the atmosphere. I would also encourage you to learn a bit of the language, you could do that online or you could sign up for a language class in your free time.

Do you know that I found a lake stand in the mountain which is really peaceful when sun shone down.I have already to learn the japanese language. Thanks a lot!

Keep silent, follow others suggestion. To a Chinese student, A lot of countries look nice and safe, but it does not mean there is no danger. Take care, it is a totally different life to you. You will feel tired, lonely and hungry there, but it will be fine finally. Good luck.

It's easy to learn Japanese these days as you can take a class (recommended), buy a cd and learn or other method available. Try to talk in Japanese as much as you can. It might be sux at first but you'll get better. Learn about the culture. Most importantly, learn to adapt while you're there. Japan is a great country. You're lucky to be given such opportunity to go there.

It's a really hard time for me to go through the first month, but now I think I have already adapt to the new but really beautiful environment. I should enjoy all these, and I will~Thanks a lot~

That's not good. i think you should have some one teach you Japanese so that they can help you. it's not good not knowing the language of another country. just imagine, you can't understand people talking beside you with out knowing if they are talking about you or planning to rob you. it's still the crisis period, so be careful..

YES! When the japanese guys have a talk and say some funny things, laughing, I feel isolate myself from others. The language is my first task I met now. Maybe I will stay here more than three month. So I have make a plan to learn japanese language and make more opportunity to contact with japanese guys. Thank you very much!

Since you are in a different country, my first bet would be to start making friends with your colleagues first. They spend a lot of time with you in the office. So its easier for you to gel-wel with them than any stranger. The other thing would be to indulge yourself in some creative activities like gym, tennis club, squash club, swimming, karate classes. There is a possibility of making more friends there and also to spend your time usefull without feeling lonely.

What you can do is you can look up for sites which have people who guide you by being your companion. You can easily do this if say you are a big fan of something from that country. For example, Kpop bands or gundams. You can go to their forum and tell them your situation. Im sure you can get some form of help there. My sister used to do it and got overwhelming responses. What she did with her friend was that they went shopping and stuff. But be mindful that it can be risky going out with people whom you dont know. You might be scammed, cheated, robed and whatnot. Stay safe, have fun, good luck Cheers!
