They annouced this morning that Ellen would be the new judge replacing Paula Abdull on American Idol this year. I like Ellen a lot but I don't know how she will be able to give constructive advice to singers since she is not a singer herself nor is she in the music industry. What do you think?

Hi Ladym I agree with you she has no musical background that I know of how can she judge but I guess it doesn't really matter she has ears and can hear LOL and thats all you need with a lot of those contestents. (does Simon have a musical background?)I don't watch American Idol but I do see your point. Ellen can't sing or dance and she's not funny either ...... I will say this she did have some interesting guest on her show and a different way to introduce them I'm not sure if this is required of her guest when they come out but they would come out dancing when she introduced them I thought that was a nice change and very clever one too instead of watching the usual wave hug and sit down of other talk show hosts.

Simon does not sing himself, but he is a very successful music producer. So he knows of what he speaks. Yes, anyone can judge weather a singer sang well or not, but the judges are suppossed to be like mentors to the contestants and give constructive advice, if I were a contestant who has been singing all my life and working on my singing and looking to improve I would not want someone who doesn't sing giving me advice. But I guess it is going to be more about ratings this year.

I don't know about this. I agree that since she is not a singer it could be interesting to see how she is on the show, but I dont see why they need 4 judges. I assumed that Kara would take Paula's place and keep it at three. Ellen is a talker too, which was a problem on this last season. They had a couple times where Paula and Kara overtalked and it did not work out well...who knows though. Ellen could be a great success. I guess we will just have to watch and see for ourselves.

I don't know why they need 4 either, it's too much talking.

I dont' watch the show, but have heard the skuttlebutt.... I have heard Donny Osmond, Marie Osmond and Kelly Clarkson have all been mentioned as replacements for Paula Abdul....none of which have the slightest experience or anything else to judge others... Kelly maybe, just cause she went through it all, but Ellen and the others...other than the name, I don't see what any of them have to offer. And 4 judges....why that? 3 is the intelligent way to go, thereby no ties or "do agains" or anything like that to deal with. Best 2 out of 3 should be where it stays. Then I read that I think in was Simon that made mention that they might be reconsidering Paula (something to that effect) and Paula responded with "there's talk, we'll see" kind of thing.

I think for singing and dancing etc, Kara, Simon and Randy could handle that. Perhaps Ellen is there to give an added touch to A.I and I'm sure it will be so interesting.

I guess you are right it's about ratings, but as a contestant I would not appreciate being critiqed by a non singer, othern than that sounded good or that sounded bad.

That's right; I would be a very nervous contestant should I join A.I, so I better just watch it on TV and vote on those talents that are well-deserved..

i think ellen would represent the majority of american voters who vote not from expertise but on simple and raw emotion, who are simply genuine fans of the art of music and singing and not self-proclaimed experts. it's a breath of fresh air to the show that purports to be a legitimate singing contest but is-in truth-not that. it's a popularity contest in the long run.

I think she needs to do a lot of research in between now and then so she can speak intelligently. I think she will add some comedic effect to the show, which will make it more fun to watch. But, she doesn't know a lot about music, so I'm not sure it's fair to the singers. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

Oh puh-leeze...none of the judges give properly constructive advice to the singers anyway, and definitely not Paula! They're replacing a useless judge with just that, another useless judge. At least Ellen is bound to be entertaining and she has proven that she can give some sort of criticism (for anyone who has seen her as a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance?).

unlike most people, I don't watch American idol, and can't say weather or not this will be a good or bad choice for the program. however, I've seen enough parodies to understand the dynamics of the trio of judges, and can't help but wonder how will this move change this dynamics. I can only guess this move was meant to bring the show a breath of fresh air, but then again, winning horse and so on.

She'll be suitable for the job, she's straightforward and a fan of great talent across the globe. She could be a key to motivation or asunder...

I love Ellen as a comedian and an actress, but I don't think she is suitable to be a judge on American Idol. Unless she has had some sort of background in the music industry, I don't think she is the right person for the job. Heck, even Britney Spears would make more sense, seeing she's a singer (although I for one never understood why...sorry). Why even bother adding a 4th judge? 3 is good enough. They've done this before and they can surely do it again. I don't see how adding a comedian to judge a music show is going to help matters. It's going to be an interesting season to say the least. And that's putting it mildly. Happy mylotting!

Hi there and smile. Well, although not all people are singers, im sure they know how to appreciate music. And that is the important factor to be a judge. The way you can appreciate sound, mellow, voice, appearance, style of a contestant is one big thing. Ellen is popular and i know lots of people like her in hosting. I think its not a bad idea to include her in american idol as a judge. The way i see it, the people placed her there see something in her that will also help and boost american idol more. happy mylotting and smile always!
