oh no! I closed the tab!

I have several tabs opened on my mozilla browser. One tab for yahoo, two tabs for a paid to click program, two tabs for another paid to post site. and one tab for mylot. I have my yahoo opened, because I take a look at my mylot notifications there. I take a look at the discussions that my friends started, and I will click it if I want to give my response. that would be the tab for mylot. When I finish responding, I would close the tab and choose another discussion. So that's what I do. But while doing that, I notice that my tab for mylot is still loading after I hit the post response in one of the discussion. so I choose another tab. but when I clicked the tab, I accidentally hit the 'x' button instead. So the tab for mylot was closed and I was not so happy, because the loading is not yet finished. So when I looked at the discussion again, just as I guessed, my response was not posted yet. . I have to re-type what I typed before and I know it was not as good as the original. anyways, is a similar situation already happened to you? not just with mylot. like when you are typing a document on MS word or excel, and you accidentally hit close without saving it. what did you do? how did you feel?

Yup, that happens to me as well. when ever mylot is so slow, i would keep refreshing the page and that's it, disappeared. but they are two techniques that you can do red. first, copy-paste the one you post then refresh the response tab again, if the post there disappears, paste the response you copy paste earlier.or type it in notepad first then if you see respond to the discussion tab then copy paste the response from note pad and put it in the response.. that would lessen your headache..at least

hello LetranKnight, Thank you for your wonderful tip. Actually, I do that when I start a new discussion. I don't usually do that when I respond. But maybe I can consider doing that some time. take care

I always have several tabs open at one time. I hate it when they all close out for whatever odd reason. It makes me mad to have to take the time to reopen everything again or lose out on something that was lost from them closing on me.

Hello stephcjh, I experienced that also, when my flock browser at the office suddenly crashes because of a site I opened, I hated it so much. Though, I have an option at my browser to warn me when I close several tabs, but when it crashes I can not do anything about it. thank you for your response.

That's correct, it won't post corectly if you close it out before pushing the post response button. Sometimes it didn't even post after that! Well what you can do is type them in Microsoft Word or Notepad. in case the program closes down. It's a good thing so you don't lose your response. I have done that before, too. It made me very made because I had typed a long response, and after it got erased I didn't remember everything I typed. So, I gave up and didn't even respond to the discussion Pablo

I've done that too. It is frustrating. I've learned not to keep too many tabs open now, especially if working on something important. I closed a tab more than once on myself and now learned to keep a few open at a time. Really depends on what sites I am on and the concentration level needed per site. If that makes any sense.

hello kprofgames, I think you are right, we have to have a concentration enough not to be confused with all the tabs open. thank you for your response.

Hi Red-Amethyst, Ahh yes, I absolutely hate doing this. I tended in the past to have one of those laptop mishaps that causes you to highlight entire paragraphs, continue typing and find out they are missing later. Either that or would press keys at the wrong time and lose entire documents. This was before I learnt how to undo things and it used to send me into a rage, especially if it was something I had worked really hard on. I absolutely hate writing things again or repeating myself. If someone asks me to do it my mind has that gate falling down to seal off a castle motion, I just can't stand it. So I would always have to take a week to forget what I read and wrote, and then I would go back to it, otherwise the poor person I was writing to would end up with a tirade against technology or my stupidity or something! I don't think it has happened yet with mylot as I have taken to checking things or trying to type watching the screen, but I have made other mistakes which have annoyed me equally lol! All the best, Dranz

I think lots of people hit the close button by accident when trying to select tabs. To avoid this, you can use ctrl+tab to cycle between tabs - I like to do this and it's much more convenient than reaching for the mouse in my opinion. If you do happen to close the tab, I believe firefox has the ability to allow you to reopen closed tabs using ctrl+shift+T. I suspect the text you typed into the discussion might be lost, but I'm not sure. Try it next time!

Hi red. I've had this happen to me before and more than once. As I usually type out my posts elsewhere and then transfer them onto mylot I don't have to worry about retyping things out. However, finding the post is another matter...especially if I cannot remember the person's username. If I can, I'll just look their profile up on mylot and find the discussion there. If I can't, I'll try my best to find the discussion by searching through the tags. That usually does the trick, though not always. There is at least one time that I couldn't locate a discussion that I had wanted to respond to after closing the tab prematurely. I'm just thankful that it doesn't happen very often or I'd surely be kicking myself for it! LOL Happy mylotting!

One thing you could do is write/type down the person's username. That way you'll have a better chance at finding the discussion again.

Hello sacmon, From time to time, I try to write or type also at notepad or word. Though, it happened to me several times, that I can't find the discussion again.

Oh it has happened to me too, exactly the same as it had happened to you. It's frustrating because I wouldn't be able to remember what I wrote word for word. Sometimes when that happens, I just give up on that discussion and just find another discussion that would interest me, because I have lost interest in that one. This has also happened while I'm working on Autocad (it's a program that helps you draw). Blackouts are frequent here in our area, and it's really frustrating to do it all again, every detail, every dimension... Writing is nothing compared to that, I must say. But it has an auto-save feature, so I just cross my fingers that it has saved most of my drawings, and not just the earlier ones.

Yeah we have them too here in our office, but on one computer it doesn't work right. It restarts just when the blackouts happen. So instead of hurrying to save the file, you'll have to wait for the computer to load just to turn it off properly.

That's one reason i dun like multi tabbing.. hehe ^_^ Because it will be too confusing and affects the loading speed of whatever i'm doing too.. lol =D Also, it tends to slow down the entire proces as compared to doing all those things individually.. hehe ^_^ I do hate such things happening to me, especially when i'm typing half way, or almost finishing, when i closed it!! BUt who can i blame except for myself?? Trying to squeeze in too many thinga at a time, only to create more mess?? hehe ^_^ As such, i will always be only opening one tab at a time, so that i wont confuse things.. haha =D

That is so annoying too, and it's happened to me many times. Although I can't help you recover what you typed, pressing ctrl+shift+t will open the last closed tab, and you can keep pressing it to open past tabs. Hopefully, being able to do this will quell some of the disappointment.

It happens to me too, especially when I've opened too many tabs, that I can only see the first word of the title and the cross. Many times when I am changing tabs I just accidentally hit the cross, the the page closed. Luckily we can undo close in mozilla. However you may have to retype your comments or responses. In MS word or excel they have autosave (or backup wahtever its called) feature so if I closed it without saving, it will do a backup and prompt me to restore the file. :)

A common mistake that is sometimes devastating, which is why whenever I predict I'm typing up a larger response I just bring up Word or Notepad or something, write away, save constantly and when done, copy/paste. Now, this unfortunately can't be done with myLot, or at least it requires certain conditions to be met, so it's a loss, but otherwise it's a constant for me. I roleplay so I usually have to type in replies that are 4~5 pages long. It's -NOT- the kind of thing you want to lose and have to write all over again, especially off from your head because you'll feel both unmotivated and the new response will simply not be as good as the original one.

hello cmdr, you got a good idea. typing first in a notepad is a good. and you can always save it just in case. copy and paste would be good but for new members who don't have enough posts, won't be able to copy paste here.

Yes that has happened to me several times already. Since it's your error, you just have to deal with it. But i am glad email programs such as gmail has the automatic save to draft function so if you suddenly lost your connection or accidentally hit the X button, you may retrieve your typed messages from the Draft section. I hope other sites and forums would have the same functions as well. That could save the world!

hello calai, oh well, we really have to deal with it. and you got a good idea, but for forums I think it would be really hard to have a draft function. Also, blogger have this function. good thing. take care

I have experienced this several times, not just here on MyLot. I have had it happen with Yahoo mail. If I type a reply to an email and take too long, sometimes Yahoo will just lock up and not respond and then I lose everything I have typed. Very frustrating. So I got into the habit of typing in Notepad or Word and periodically saving it, then pasting it into the application. It works great especially if you take time and thought into your writing and want to get it just right. With Firefox, you can reopen a tab that you close by mistake by going to history, then recently closed tabs. It may work for established users that are allowed to paste. I discovered that newbies aren't allowed to... I tried reopening a tab like that (that I had typed in) and it gave me the message that I wasn't allowed to paste (have to have a "rating" of 500 or above???) so it may try to put the text back in for you. It didn't for me so I had to retype everything I had said by memory and I know it wasn't as good as the first one... And THEN on top of that, I found out that newbies aren't even allowed to insert emotes into posts... So I can't even put a symbol of my frustration into this post! What's up with that??? I guess newbies are second class citizens here in the MyLot community. Grrrrrr!!!!!
