Fish on the Phone

I have resisted for years. Apart from work, my acquaintance with the cell phone - or mobile as we call it here - has been cursory at best. However, the Boss got caught up on the fringes of a fight at a rail station last week and we decided that we now ought to have at least a basic mobile each. So now I have a simple phone. When I say simple that's exactly what I means - a number pad to call people. A green button to press if someone calls me and....... er.....that's it. So go on - call me. Are you a dinosaur that has reluctantly moved into the phone age - or are you a whizz kid whose phone will do everything?

I have two and they are both like yours. I have never understood why a phone should do anything other than make and receive calls and the odd text here and there. If I want to take photos I get a camera and if I want to access internet I go to my computer. Now if they make one that does the ironing I just might consider moving on

Oh yes. The ironing would be good and perhaps a cuppa in bed first thing. LOL.

I have a cell phone that's fairly basic by todays standards. It does calls in and out, has voice mail and takes pictures. It's the free phone that came from my cell provider. It would drive me nuts to have a phone that's basically a mini computer. My techie son recently purchased one that had all the bells and whistles. He liked the internet capability, but as a phone he hated it. It was not intuitive at all for using it, and it came with a 500 page manual. Now, who is going to read all that? He ended up returning it and got something a bit simpler to use.

What more do you need I wonder. I know that there are iPhones (and low phones?) etc etc. But all I want is to call to say that I'm late, stuck in traffic etc. A 500 page manual. My car sat nav has one of those. All I want to do is get from A to B!

You'd think that would be simple! Unfortunately, if you follow the manual, the rest of the alphabet falls in between...lol.

I'm a dinasaur. Seriously...my ex gave me the track phone that I carry around. It serves its purpose. I work nites...out of town and travel late hours...its good to have it. my daughter uses it to call me when she needs rides from her practices and whatnot. Only a select few have the number and they know...it is not to chat on. I pay 20;00 for one hour. It expires om 3 months at which time, I add mins so those that are unused get added on. it works for us. Im not a phone perxon.

I'm much the same Sid. I don't know how much a minute I pay - but I do know that I have to make one call every 180 days to keep my credit valid.

I recently swapped from having a landline and a cheap prepaid only does calling phone to having just a nice cell phone. I am definitly not a wiz but I'm learning how to send pics and receive them...and video too...I've also started texting alot. I find by not having the land line and just using the cell phone I'm actually alot more contactable than i was because i was RARELY ever home to answer my phone!

That's exactly my argument against cell phones. I don't want to be contactable! I keep mine switched off. I've had it a week and not made or received a call on it yet! LOL. I don't even know what the ring tone sounds like! I'm hopeless I know.

I'm afraid I am like you and am a dinosaur P1key! While I do have a basic cell phone and always do, I rarely use it. Only when I am going to be out of the house by myself do I even take it...and Then I have to take the directions with me so I can read how to use it If I have too!!

I'm somewhere in the middle. I've had a mobile 'phone for about 10 years now. I usually change it about once a year. I don't change it for the new technology, it's usually changed because it's fallen in the toilet or something! I have done well with my current 'phone which I have had for 13 months I think. I am getting bored with it now and would like a new one but I'm on an 18 month contract! I am quite happy to have a mobile 'phone that's just a 'phone and nothing else. I can live without the extra bits of technology. I think there are things on my 'phone that I still don't know how to use. I do like to have a camera on my 'phone though because I always carry my 'phone and might not always have the camera when I want it. The reason I got a mobile in the first place was instead of a landline. I think if I had never had a mobile in the first place, I wouldn't miss it too much. No one calls me anyway!

Ours are still in their boxes Pumpkin, although I have charged them and worked out how to switch them on! It's slow going but I shall get to the point of actually making a call on one soon! I have your mobile number I think. Maybe I'll call you just so that you can't say "no-one calls me" again. Shan't say when though!!!

well, I have a whole lot more phone than I need with the iPhone, but I do use a number of the features quite a bit because I have them. I used to use the alarm on the old phone, and still do on this one, but this one I can set multiple alarms so I don't have to reset it all the time. In fact, I can set it to go off at the same time just on weekdays for work, and just for a reminder to water mom's plant once a week. I can set the calendar to remind me of doctor appointments. I've used the map to find things, or just look at thing in general. I take pictures and you guys have seen many of them up here on the lot. I "IM" a friend off and on, its easier for him so he's not talking at his job, a quick note is all he needs. I use the calculator, in fact, probably the things I use the least are the ipod function, since I'm not a big music listener.

I am an Apple addict Elic. I even "mystery Shopped" the iPhone. but it has never really attracted me. I just can't get excited by them. I had a phone for work and it went off 24/7 - they eventually paid me £100 a month to be on permanent call - and contributed to my breakdown. I just couldn't get away from it. Even today I shudder if I hear the Nokia "ring". LOL. I do have an iPod though. Except that daughter pinched the earphones when she went to the US. I'll be able to use it again next May when she comes back!!

Hi p1ke, Was wondering how you are getting on with your mobile...just keep it with you when you go out and keep it on! You never know when you may need it or if you get a call from the Boss because of something, another reason you have it so don't forget! Be a good boy now and remember to do that! Ok my mobile is like a mobile computer, can get onto facebook free of charge, also have Skype on there too so if I want to ring someone on Skype it is all free, also photographs that are just as good as a camera infact better than some so it does have all the mod cons and techie stuff on it too...hugs LoLo

Thats still after 40yrs of knowing her!..LOL..hugs LoLo

Your mobile sounds very high tech - Skype too. You are a very dark horse I think. All sorts of hidden depths to you. LOL. XXXX

I have a very basic phone like yours. All I want it for is to be available for my kids if they need me and for if I have an emergency. I don't want to play games on it, surf the internet or text anyone. I have service through Net10 and my minutes roll over if I don't use them. I buy the minumum 150 minutes a month for $15 and now have 2,990 minutes saved up!

That's handy that the minutes rollover. I have to make one call every 180 days to keep my credit. But otherwise I don't have to buy extra time at all. 2,990 is a long time. You could phone anyone for ages!

hi pikefish oh I am most definitely a dinosaur when it'comes to cell phones. I have not yet succumbed and am trying not'to have one. but as my son says in an emergency they can come in handy. of course being the techy he is it comes very easy for'him to use a cell phone even with all the bells and whistles on it'but if I do get one it has to be the most simple one of all, one for'a dummy maybe even a book called how to use cell phones for dummies.

I also have a simple phone, P1ke - but I don't actually know how to make a call on it! I only use it to receive and send text messages, and bought it when our daughter was doing a long, lonely road trip and I wanted to know she was safe and locked in a motel room or RAAF base each night. Unless one of the kids is travelling and I need to know where they are and their ETA, so I can pick them up from the railway station, my phone sits on my desk and is never used! I have $30 credit on a 365-day plan - and it lasts just about that long, too! I refuse to be a slave to a phone - and only my family members have the number.

I have learned to send texts from my computer for free Guy, so the text bit is probably not going to get used much - except by the phone network operator to tell me that I have X minutes - why don't I buy something extra - wonder if they have a tea making attachment! Of course I won't even get those if I don't turn the thing on!

Hi plkef1sh, I loathe the things especially the accessibilty element and held out for years but saw the necessity of one whilst traversing the mountain up to town often and my fear of breaking down up there with my poor sad child waiting at the schoolyard gate thinking he'd been orphaned. So I purchased the cheapest they had which obviously had no extra features of any kind but I hadn't got a clue how to use it or how to put a number into it, but I got round that by keeping the numbers in my handbag and hoping a helpful Greek olive picker would be able to make a phone call for me if needed on the top of the mountain. And when the clocks went back can you believe only one person in the whole village knew how to change the time on the thing. I didn't even know they needed charging up, they are supposed to have a battery inside. You will be pleased to hear that I have moved forward a little and can now answer it in a foreign language whilst driving the car up said mountain. Did I mention I am a complete technophobe.

That's sort of where I am too. I can make and receive calls. That's enough. I do know how to charge it too. In fact that's all that I have done with the thing so far. Tomorrow I will see if I can turn it on. No need to hurry. Enjoy your olives, save a bottle of extra virgin for me. LOL.

My phone does everything. It even has an actual keyboard on it so I can text my little heart out. I spend 30 minutes texting a conversation with someone that it would take 5 minutes to call them and tell them what I wanted. Ahh technology simplifies our lives right?

I'm not any kind of a dinosaur. lol I got a big clunker cell phone free of charge from the auto club back in the 90's. I never turned it on and only used it for emergencies. But slowly, slowly I started warming up to the idea of a phone that I could use without being home or having it attached to the wall. Darned annoying when I'm driving though. I don't pick up then. The idea of it being a planner, a camera, an address book , an alarm clock, a video game, etc. etc. hasn't quite grown on me yet though.

I haven't quite found where I plug it into the wall. I must get a reel of cable for it. I rarely drive more than 40 miles from home these days so if I get 50 I should be OK. LOL.

Like you I resisted for a long, long time. All my friends at work were getting them (except for one guy who swore never to get one - I've lost touch with him now, but I wonder how he's doing with this!??) - but I managed to do without one for the longest time. (Although not as long as you, lol!) I thought that they were stupid, annoying things, a bit poser-ish, and part of the whole technological craze which I didn't want to buy into. (Lol, as I sit typing at my computer at silly hours of the morning!) But then a close family member fell ill and I needed to be in touch with the hospital and other relatives, and rather than borrowing other people's phones all the time I bought myself a very simple mobile. Like you I deliberately sought out a model that I could only use to phone people. What else would I need it for? I wasn't into silly games or anything. Beware though p1key! Read my sorry tale... Once my simple phone wore out, I decided to go for another simple model. I also realised how useful texting was, and getting used to having a mobile I started to take it for granted and gradually used it more and more. Until it became uneconomical for me to carry on paying as I go(ed). So I decided to get a contract. With the contract came a different phone. It looked simple enough and I could understand how to use it. But it had a camera! And this was around the time I had my daughter, so I found the camera extremely useful I can tell you! And when it came to renewing my contract they offered me a different phone with a better camera. Of course I took it and I'm very happy with it. So my phone is no longer a simple one, and I'm afraid my usage is no longer minimal. I communicate with most of my friends via text message and we all phone eachothers' mobiles as we're all out and about all the time. And so now I'm very sad to say, I would be very lost without it! Some days I look at what I have become and I long for my nice, simple phone...

Apart from my daughter I don't know anyone to text with Liquorice. However, yours is a cautionary tale and I shall have to ensure that I am not sucked into the general melee of "I'm by the bacon counter where are you" banter that I often hear in supermarkets etc. I can see the practicality of a camera - but I do have the real thing. Now the digital camera really is an amazing device. I'll take it slowly - can I come to you when I need therapy please.

i used to have a good phone with camera video, 3g and radio, before but was snatched and so i decided ever since to use only basic phone which i am using till now. i am quite satisfied actually with it. i don't text a lot and rarely make a call so i think those extra features like radios are not being missed at all. but i do sometimes like to take a picture of something and i do miss this camera feature and so i hope that i can save enough to buy another phone basically for its features which i wont' use for texting. i like camera phone cause they are easier to carry and not as expensive as real cameras.

Hi there p1kef1sh Aww you poor thing, were you kicking and screaming too!! lol . I am very happy with my phone. It is great that I have a camera on it because then I am always ready to capture a moment as I don't carry my camera around with me all the time but my phone I do. I can also listen to music on it that I have to put on there first. I am sure my phone is capable of a lot of things I don't know about but that is all I want it to do basically oh and send text messages and recieve calls. I never make calls on it becuase it is too expensive but at least I have that option if my car breaks down in the middle of nowhere!!

Yeah, you're right. That was the mobile phone before. But since human will continue to develop and invent things for his future development, the mobile phone nowadays has evolved into something wherein we could only see it in computers. My mobile phone for example, cannot only sends and receives messages, pictures, songs and videos but it can also do mobile internet, a very impossible things before. But because of the development within networks, it is already possible to do mylot via my mobile phone. But I guess, only teens or younger people who are tech-savvy are looking forward of having such features in their mobile phones so that they will already be always online whenever they go.
