How can one save money successfully?

No matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to save enough money. Every time I do save something, it quickly disappears. I just can't help but think that money seems to seep through my fingers like water! I know that I'm not the only one experiencing this, but there are also a lot of people who are "successful savers". Are you one of them? Do you have any tips on how to save and keep money for rainy days?

open a bank account with passbook and not with atm. leave your passbook at home so that everytime you go out you will not going to buy a lot since you dont have money with you. atm is not advisable as you can withdraw money from it anytime anywhere.

I do agree with the ATM! It's a good thing my sister sends money through my parents' ATM, and not mine. It would be a disaster (I think) if she sent money via my ATM!

I usually am pretty good at saving money. I have managed to keep most of the money that I've made of the past year and only buy a few things that weren't absolutely necessary. I have found, though, that saving money usually takes a lot of self control. There isn't really any other way to do it, because you have to be able to keep yourself from making purchases that you don't completely need. Just make sure that you put a bunch of money in a bank account or something that isn't easily accessible or has a fee to take money out of it. Then you will be less likely to use that money for little purchases.

Oops. I forgot that I had a bank account! The piggy bank is so easy to open after all, and sometimes temptation SEEMS too overpowering! I confess, I am a petty thing lover. Okay! Self-control. Discipline. Thank you!

As I have 3 sources of income (rental collections, my small business and my online earnings)..this is what I do: I deposit all the money from my rental collections; I keep my sales from my small business for daily expenses; and my online earnings... I just let them pile up my paypal account... and use them for any of my online purchases so I don't have to touch my credit card when there is something i want online....

That's really good! I have no job yet, so money is really hard to come by as I still have to depend on my parents (for the meantime, promise!!). I try as much as possible to audit whatever I have spent for the day and get to control my spending. Self-control!!!

I think I'm good at saving and always have been as a kid. My parents say I am frugal but I just don't see any reason in spending on something that isn't necessary. To save up, I normally cut down entertainment and shopping to start. I also try to set a budget and chip away a little money from my monthly income. I put it away and I don't touch it anymore. It no longer becomes a part of my "money to spend" so I keep control of my wallet.

Hehe. Well, that's what I think. I only splurge on the things I can make money out of - a good computer and something that's good for experience, like traveling. For other things, I don't really spend much. I'm not a cellphone person either because I stick with the bare essentials. Having call/text feature is good enough for me, hehehe.

Honestly, I've never been the saving type ever since I was a kid. Another problem is that I don't have work yet! I just graduated from college and work is a bit hard to find as many hospitals look for experienced nurses. Where do you usually keep the money that you shouldn't touch? Thank you!

Most of the people around me say I am stingy but nope... It just happened that I have a strong self control when it comes in buying... Most of the time, I buy things only that are necessary and treat myself once in a while. I dont totally deprived myself and my love ones. I think ahead but never think of the things I want to buy before my money comes. I do save the money for more important things and emergencies. This is me since I was a child, I dont know how I became like this coz my mom is absolutely my opposite. When it comes in buying dont just buy things because of brands, check the quality and price. Compare and see the difference. Before buying ask yourself if you really need it or you just want it because its "in". Be practical. Yes money cant buy everything, it will not make us REALLY happy but always remember that MONEY is needed for us to survive. Here on earth, All of movement involves money. So use money wisely...

Dont worry you would learn that. The fact that you are aware of your weakness and you have the desire to change it, thats a good start. Its good that you think about saving at your age. Just dont be an impulsive buyer. Thats the key.

I have tried staying at home too!! My friends just keep bugging me though, and tease me that I'm living up on my status as the unemployed one, the bum, the couch potato. Grrr. And to think they're suffering from the same plight as I am! LOL

Hello, Im not that good with saving money either but I can save some. I have family of 4 and I am also the only financial person too, so it is just hard for me to save a whole lot. I find something that help me save money by locking my money away. I mean, you have to put those money away that it hard to get and hard to find and hard to remember.... never think of it, forget about it. It is hard to do so but just pretend that you never have those money in some how... and dont forget to fill it up, in order to get more once you need it. I have a bucket that has a hole like a piggy bank, and everyday I just put money in it. I never use that bucket at all... never look in the hole to see how much money I have. If I do that then those money will be used for sure :).... try and it works out very well for me

Yes, we manage to save quite a bit a month, but the minute we get paid we put a certain amount of money in the bank every time, the first thing that happens is it goes in the bank before we do anything else at all with the rest of the money. Decide how much you want to save every month, say $20 per pay check. The minute you get paid take it to the bank and put it in there, that way you will never miss it and will not have it to spend. If you don't have enough to open a savings account then the minute you get paid and cash your check put the $20.00 in an envelope and then put the envelope away somewhere inconvenient for you to reach. Don't go near that envelope until you are ready to put the next $20.00 in there. Keep doing that and you will have a lot of money saved in no time. Another great thing to do is a get a big jar and throw your change in there every day at the end of the day, you can even throw dollar bills in there. You will be surprised how fast your change can add up, and you won't even miss the money.

My mom does this! Hahaha... I was wondering where my big ceramic apple jar went, and I saw it inside her closet! I was about to get it back, but the thing was sooo heavy already, she put all her spare change in it. I remembered one time she forgot to get money from the bank, she simply went to the jar and took out a few bills. :)

I think the best way to save money is not spend too much money and have to earn more money. I have saved money one times. That is in student period. I had idea to save money for my travel. At that, I were a second student. I had salary about $7 per week from my father for spend many things to service my study. I didn't spend it. I had plan for spend that money. I always think before I spend money. That money I saved for 2 years with my scholarship and many money from other occasion. Finally, I can saved about $500 - $600. I spent all for my travel to Laos alone last year.

We have the same problem, every time I have money I usually spend it until the last cent. What I'm doing now is I'm giving it all to my wife because she doesn't give my money back easily! In your case, why not open a time account in a bank?

In order to save as much money as you can, you need to be thrifty. This means buying only what is NECESSARY, not what you want to have. Forget about luxury and comfort, just have the basics and simplicities. Another thing is, keep track of what you spend each month. Allocate some money monthly for your monthly expenses and take note how much extras you need to spend each month. Avoid using credit cards - these really drain your money real quick. Good luck :)

Its very important to understand the habbit(s) that keep you from saving money. If your a shopaholic, I suggest you go shopping without credit or debit cards and take only what you want to spend, that way you don't get carried away. Another important thing is to keep a financial record of your spendings, which includes living expenses along with those much needed luxuries. This way you know what you can cut back. Now there are many ways you can save money, but the most effective way to do so is to get a savings account(obviously), and deposit a certain percentage of your paycheck. Ideally you should put away at least 10% of what you earn, but remember that something is always better than nothing. And you should'nt keep your entire savings under your matress, its less than efficient. Because of anual inflation rates, you actually lose money on what you save at home. There are also Financial institutions whose employees would more than likely give you a hand. Finally you could always invest your savings, but beware, the higher the potential return, the higher the risk.

Hi Aixshaonline, I actually do not have any plan to save money. I just try to not spend too much. And in my opinion, earn more can make you much more money than save. For some big stuffs, I am willing to spend more, while buying some little things, I alwasy pick up the less expensive one. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

I think one should allocate his budget. No room for impulsive attitude to buy what you just want. Set aside certain amount as your savings.

Actually there are many ways to save, and according to your needs:One of the simplest ways to start saving is to open an account at the bank. if you are about saving. you should ideally have a savings account that is separate from the account in which you deposit. You should ideally look for an acconut that does not have a monthly administration fee and that offers the best interest rate as possible. Make a budget: first that any good financial expert will advise you to do when setting out on the path to savings is to make a budget. An accurate budget will identify all of your necessary expenses, which in turn will give you the abillty to calculate exactly how much you can afford to set aside for savings.

I am like you. I got £650 recently and was in a frenzy of spending until it had all gone. Now I am back to being poor again. Come on pay day!

I think the best way to save money is by having self control.Firstly try to to set a realistic budget for yourself and stick to it no matter what.Buy only the things you need dont waste your money on things that you do not need and can live without, cause then you will be spending money that you ought to be saving.Whilst sticking to your budget make sure you put some money aside just a bit ,if you continue like this your savings will grow.
