Why do people post ugly pictures of themselves on social sites?

I have to wonder... whenever someone posts what I think is a very bad picture of themselves, I have to wonder why they posted it. I screen all my pics before posting, and if I or my friends don't look decent in one of them, no way do I put it on Facebook or a site like that.
Now there are 2 sides to this. One is there are some people who truly do not review their pics and just upload a whole folder at once. That I can almost understand. In that case it's just that they were lazy and a bad pic slipped through :)
But what about the people who pick an ugly pic as a profile pic? I know one person (not my friend but someone else's) who always post a picture of herself looking like a mean b*tch. She doesn't smile, nor does she look good. I don't know why she posts these ugly pics. She updates her profile pic every so often and I think to myself "do you really think this is going to attract guys?" I've seen others post the "sticking your tongue" out image as their profile pic. Is that really the way you want people to see you every day?
I might put up a pic where I don't look the best, if it's funny for some reason, but I won't put it as my profile pic. I always try to pick a photo where I look my best to make my profile pic. So I guess I don't understand why some people put up ugly photos of themselves. Is it that they just don't realize how ugly that photo looks? Or do they just not care? What about you? Are you careful about what pics you post of yourself? Or do you not really care?

Recently I posted a discussion regarding what these social networking sites which I heard from a talk show. They say that it is somewhat a form of self promotion. We put our pictures there so that everybody can see it. So for those who uses an ugly picture on their primary photos, I guess that's the image they want to promote. lol =) I don't know. Of course, me personally would always choose to use something good since a lot of people are going to see it. Who wants to be commented negatively either? We know that people are good at it so why give them chance to do that on you.

lol this is funny. well, ugliness and beauty are subjective. maybe that person who posted an ugly pic believes that he/she was beautiful in that photo. or maybe his/her friends told him/her that he/she looked really good in the photo too. some people just don't care what other people think of them.

A lot of the time if I don't have a recent, decent pic to post, I won't, I'll just leave the old one up. Sometimes my kids do weird pics and post them as a profile pic and they laugh about it. There are two of them that are over 18 and moved out on their own so there isn't a lot I can say about it other than comments to them. They say that they're letting everyone know that they're in a bad,good,feeling silly,etc mood and with a pic where their sticking out their tongue, crossing their eyes or hanging upside down, they say that no one can steal their pic and steal their identity.

Silly pics are one thing and although I can't stand the tongue pics, at least they are usually silly and the people just having fun. I would never post a pic of myself in a bad mood because that's just depressing. i guess i can see their point but for me a profile pic is used to say HI :) So I want to be happy in the pic at least.

Well, my question is this: how can you judge a person's picture ugly? Maybe she likes the pictures! Not every girl is on the internet to attract guys, and even then, not every girl cares about how they look and how others look, because they see beyond looks.

Well I think people sticking their tongue out is very ugly in photos and I don't get why so many people do that. Other types I see are just mean looking. The person doesn't bother to smile, doesn't bother to look happy, instead they just look pissed. I wonder why they would want that to be their photo b/c it doesn't seem very welcoming. Instead it seems like they are saying "stay the heck away from me"! which I do.

WHO CARES, WHATS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD SO JUDGEMENTAL HOW A PERSONS LOOKS ARE TO BE LIKED OR NOT.

this isn't about the person themselves being unattractive, it's about them posting a picture that is ugly meaning they either look mean, or they are doing something stupid, or whatever the case may be. Why would anyone want to portray themselves in such an ugly light?

Why? To escape the reality that they are uuuugggglyyyy hahaha, that's why i dont join such social networking sites it's just crap, i will join if that site pays me since "Money is Everything" for me, nways those ugly creatures tend to find some people that likes them, isn't it funny? Hahahaha, friendster? myspace? facebook? What's the point?!!! Btw, these people that post there pictures sometimes edit it using PS and they find it really funny or gorgeous for them. Hahahaha

the fact that this persons picture is ugly or mean and bi**hy is your OPINON what I think looks good is alomst always not what my friends would have picked much less someone who is a friend of a friend. She probably likes the picture and does not care what others think. If I spent time worring about if my friends would like my pictures before I post them I would have half the pictures and it would have taken me twice as long. I always wonder why people have pictures of animals or things like that on their profile picture ;-)

My hubby posted one on his with his tongue sticking out looking like a goof. I dunno, I'd change it personally. But most of his friends on FB are from work & they all clown around so I guess that's probably why but I wouldn't.

i don't look good in picture. so i don't upload my pic. only one time did i post in one site. but it is a group picture and you can't tell who i am in the pic. but i am in the center of the picture though. anyways, that is only one picture i uploaded. i don't plan to upload more pictures. i am not confident of my looks actually.

Everyone is different and they may like a particular picture that they have posted, that's not to say that their picture is neccessarily ugly! Some people are really not that bothered about how they look in their picture, it just shows the real down to earth them if that makes any sense! I have my photo displayed as my avatar on my lot and I have to admit, I had to overdo the smile a little! I'm not really that bothered what people may or may not think about my picture though. Andrew

Everyone takes bad pictures every once and awhile. But, I am one to not judge a book by its cover. I would never say one is ugly, it is just plain mean. The person who puts up a picture probably thinks that they are beautiful. They have good self esteem which is good! Or, that is the only picture they have to post. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. As for me posting my pictures, I do pick a picture that is flattering rather than one that is not. I don't just throw up a picture on my page because I don't care. Yes, people will be seeing this picture, and of course most of society will judge you by that picture.
