Shocked by how old you look?

I recently bought a camera and wanted to try out the self-timer. I decided to take a self-portrait, with my face in profile. I was so shocked when I saw the result - I looked so old! Admittedly, I hadn't prettied myself up for the picture, as I was just trying it out - but the wrinkles! I suppose we get used to looking at ourselves in the mirror, and just see our faces full-on (which in my case is bad enough), but seeing what we look like to other people is an eye-opener. I am trying to keep positive by thinking 'I've earned those wrinkles'!

I have my childlike days; even at 55 years old. Saturday my 31 year old daughter told me I act 12 some times. I was at the bank making a deposit and made her ask the teller for a sucker for me. The teller got a kick out of my ewhining as well I think. He was smiling widely and laughing a lot. Hee hee. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

It's good that you don't feel your age - having youngsters around can certainly do that for you!

I'm not much concerned. I know I've always had my mom's eyes, so that's worth something to see. As for the rest, the wrinkles and scars are there. I've never been a Dorian Grey type person. Appearance don't say much to me about folks and I'm not concerned with what my appearance says to others. That, afterall, is a reflection of them and how and why they judge as they do, not a reflection of me. Looking different than I do will not change who I am so why all the fuss?! ENJOY!

I agree. I don't judge people by how they look, and if that is how someone else judges people, then they wouldn't be my type of person anyway. Did that make sense?

not so much shocked as much as mad! It pisses me off! I don't need to look this old! I am still young and and I still have that prettyness I had once and that's it. This sagging oldness can just go on and get out of here I don't want no part of it! Seriously I don't mind getting old but I don't want to look like or come across as that old lady!

I'm sure that you don't or won't come across as an old lady if you don't feel like one!

Hey this happens to all of us. The same thing happened to me recently, when I attended a party, they took photos of all us and afterwards, they sent a framed one as a souvenior, and when I took a look at that, my first thought was, boy how old I have become. I am more than 50years, so I think that makes me quite old, even though I am quite young at heart.

Sometimes it hurts because we always thought ourselves the most beautiful. What happened to you may be camera malfunction, or bad source of light or may be you are not well prepared or may be something else. But if all these facts are not true then what? Is the world ends tomorrow or the river stop flowing or the clock stops suddenly? I have got the same problem one time. But I resolved it with the thought which I do believe in my heart and soul is "I am beautiful in my years and the most beautiful in my mind and in my deeds"

I'm not worried about not being beautiful! It's just that I hadn't seen a picture of my profile for years, so it was a shock!

Hi katsalot, u cant be serious! Nobody can look as old as I do. :) Well, in any event, even if I do, it does not greatly concern me. I mean, it is not as if somebody wiped out the balance in my bank. I would be really worried about that for sure and would not be able to sleep, and even if I could, I would be getting up several times in the night, wondering how I am going to manage the next month! So I guess, it is something I'd be disappointed about, but not unduly perturbed. But I do have a good news for u. And it is this. Stem cells can be used to rejuvinate those cells! So in a couple of years, markets will be flooded with creams that will remove those wrinkles. So chill and go on with ur life. Since it doesnt make any difference to loved ones, or ur bank balance, u can put it in perspective I suppose. :)

I'm chilling! I bet when these new miracle rejuvenating creams finally come out they will cost a fortune, and I'd rather spend money on more important things!

I am 55 and have recently been shaving my hed bald. Now that I've let it grow some I have so many gray hairs. A lot more than 3 years ago. I have no teeth and I now see how my mouth area looks caved in somewhat due to age etc. I am just starting to get wrinkles. But then again, I care less what others think about my looks. It is my personality that I prefer to have others look at first and foremost, looks are last on the ladder of life fopr me. Thanks and have a great day/evening. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

My hair is getting more grey in it every day, but I don't mind. And yes, personality is definitely the most important thing.

Hi katsalot1. I myself had experienced the same way like you. I took a picture of myself and was aghast by what I saw. But you can never deny the fact that we all age. I guess it was an eye opener for me to accept that I am not as I used to be. From then on, I would just tell myself that it is ok to look old. I know that I have learned something in life.

Hi Katsalot, Never say 'you are old' to yourself. Always have a positive thinking and you will be always young in everybody's hearts. If you were to look back to your old pictures, you might see more differences in your look. Getting older and maybe wrinkles started to appear on your face. Not to worry so much. They are plenty of cosmetics available in the market, which can be used to cover the wrinkles and also to protects your face skins looks even better. You just need more make-up to get yourself looks prettier. Even you are in the midst of 40-50, you can still look younger!!Have a confidence on yourself!!

I so feel your pain! It is weird, we get this idea in our heads of what we look like, and that idea sticks there, even though we are physicly changing on the outside, in our minds eye we still see ourselves as our mental image. I had this happen to me a few years back. In my minds eye, i still looked exactly the same as i did when i was 18 and graduating high school (i am not 29, was probably 26 or 27 when this event occured) Wellone day i was gtting out of the shower and getting ready for the day, when i caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror..and was just shocked! I felt like i looked so old! I mean in all actuality, i don't look that much differnt than i did 7 or 8 years ago...but it was just likei could see all the subtle differences at one....the slight changes in my face shape where some of the baby fat and youthful firmness was disapearing..very very slight lines aorund the eyes...i really don't know what many of the differences were, but it just amazd me, because in that moment, i felt like my entire mental image of myself was changing. I wonder how long it will be before i have another moment like that..

Yes, you really summed it up. We have an image of ourselves which doesn't change until we see ourselves from a different perspective, or in my case, a different angle. My face shape has changed a lot as well, plus my nose is quite a lot different. I will have to re-adjust my mental image to fit!

I have noticed with people who look older thn they when they are younger that their appearance doesn't change very much as they age. I have known several people who at 40 looked pretty much the same as they did when they were 20!

That's a good way of looking at it - becoming more mature day by day!

Same here. I find that each year, I prefer how I looked in my previous photos than on my present ones. We do get older and at 47, I see lots of fine wrinkles and gray hairs on me. But, I try to age gracefully not steadily go down the hill. Sob..sob...

I'm not shocked seeing the photos of myself, because it looks like what I see every day in the mirror. But once I was shocked by how young I look. Last month, in a conference, a professor reckoned that I was just a high school people ( at that time I finished my PhD), but up to now, I never think that I look so young.
