I just finished a couple of days working on my daughter's laptop computer. Now, I am no expert in computers, but I did manage to make it a good deal better. The main problem was that most of the free space was used on the hard drive. I did succeed in restoring it to about 50%. One problem that continues to bug me is that I could not set the desktop preferences because that feature seems to have been disabled somehow. I tried right clicking on the desktop and selecting properties like I have always done, but when the window opens I could not select a wallpaper. That is a problem I never had before. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

I know nothing at all about reformatting the disk, stephcjh! I did, however, toy with the idea of doing a system restore. I contacted a computer guy that I know, and he is going to take a look at it for her. Thank you, and cute avatar.
