I do know a little bit of sign language which has come in handy due to my recent operation which does not permit me to speak for 2 weeks. I am amazed though, how few people understand me or know very little sign language. It has inspired me to take a course to learn sign language properly myself.
Can you sign? Do you think there are less people that can these days?

Hi Humbug,
gues I have my pwn way of signing, but it would be nice to know how to sign properly unfortunatley though I haven't enought time to take a course in learning it. Yes I do think there are less people who know how to sign, maybe it should also be part of the school corriculuum to learn, as you never know when you will need it...LoLo

Thing is it is good for deaf people too and there is quite a few people around who are deaf and need sign language, so whichever way it helps both...hugs LoLo

I do hope that you ar4 now better. It could not have been easy for you with you having to look after th boys whilst this was going on. No, I do not know sign language and it has been one of thse things that I wanted to learn but never got around to actually learning it. Did you go online to learn how to sign? I think that I will do it. You have inspired me.

I so wanted to do sign language, years ago when I worked in a nursery there was this boy with cerebal palsy who could only do sign, I so desperately wanted to communicate with him and I asked if I could go on a sign course but because I wasn't a permanent member they wouldn't let me go and the college wasn't running sign courses. I am not sure if I have the acumen to learn and sadly the sign I did learn for the boy I have lost. I have got the sign alphabet but that isn't much good on it's own. Wish I lived nearer to you I would love to accompany you on the course we could give each other moral support! Good luck for Tuesday my dear friend ;0)

Hey there wolfie
Thanks, I am really looking forward to it and they know that I can't speak so I will be missing out on some of the role play - phew hahaha. It is a shame we don't live closer, we would have a bit of laugh in a sign language course, I would be told off for talking too much though hahaha
.
Hey what's with the new avatar?
Thanks wolfie
PS will let you know how I get on after I have been on Tuesday!

I think I would be a disruptive influence on you, we'd be laughing too much, well I would be anyhow. I wondered if anyone noticed the change of avatar, you were the first. Kind of got paranoid having my face up for the world to see. So I feel safer and that pic is much cuter and prettier than me anyhow LOL!

I use to sign very well. I have not used it in many years and hardly know any now. I'd also love to take signing classes. But with my seizers and the lack of needing it now I know it would not do me much good.
Good luck with your classes. You should do very well.

I sure can't, other than the obvious gesture with the middle finger. No idea if more or less people can sign now. When I went to college, they taught that there, but I didn't take any classes in signing. There's another one I wish I might have done. I never took any psychology, business or computer classes either. No MATH - but I don't regret that one!

I can not sign . I think it's great that u took a course . my aunt was deaf & she showed us how to make the letters of the alphabet when we were small. she never signed herself so that was far as we ever got w/it. She was able to wear a hearing aid that helped plus she took a lip reading class herself.

I don't know how to do sign language and I wish I did.
It's one of those things on my list of "things that I should do one of these days".
I think it would be great if schools would put "sign language" in as a choice along with foreign languages like Spanish and French.
It might encourage more people to learn, if they could choose it in high-school.
I think a lot of us just can't (or won't) fit it into our schedules unless we have someone in our life that requires us to learn it.

Good for you getting yourself on a course Humbug. I think that actually more people can sign than before. I see it all the time and have even thought about learning to sign so that I could lead parties of deaf or hearing impaired people round the Cathedral.

Hi ya p1kef1sh
Hey I haven't got myself on a course yet but I plan too. I am due to start a course next week which is an introduction to councelling and hope that doing a signing course would be good for when I can become a fully qualified councellor!! I think it would definatly be good for you and your tours!!
Thanks

No, I can't sign and I think it's just great that you are taking courses in it! One of my sisters can sign and I have a friend who speaks 3 languages: Spanish (native language), English and Sign Language. She signs for a living and loves her job.

Hi, Humbug
I just know the alphabets in sign language. Thus, if I need to do sign language, I just spell it out. I learned to do that when I was in gradeschool and there were also deaf-mute students in our campus. I never learned to sign real words though. I think more and more people are learning the sign language nowadays.
Have a nice day!

I don't know sign language but could seen it as a very useful thing. It is another sort of contact that may one day be vital. I think they should have a few classes here in there in school just so people who can't here can atleast be said hello to. It is sad that some people are bestowed with these impairments so I think society could do this atleast to give back a little bit to them.

I always wanted to but I also never had the time or the room in my schedule when I was in college...and I seriously don't think I would have the ability to retain it. I'm better with language on paper; I have issues with spatial recognition so I think I probably lack the skill to learn sign language. It's a tremendous thing to be fluent in, though, and I envy those who are!
I'm sorry you had to have such a serious operation...I hope it went smoothly and that you feel better very soon!

hi humbut25 no I cannot but would love to learn. I do
think there are not too many who can do this, it is
really rather beautiful to watch someone who does know
it and does it well. As I watched her I began to see
why certain movements meant certain words and thought'
I believe that I could learn that fairly easy.

I used to know how to sign because I had a good friend who's parents were both deaf. Signing is not widely known because there's not a great public need for the skill. I think it's great that you're interested in learning to sign. From what I observed by watching my friend's parents, there is much to learn.

No can't sign but I wish I could, because I think its kind of cool, its like being able to speak a different language, but without speaking words at all, and I think that many people should be open to learning sign language, because there are a lot of good people out there who just happens to be hearing impaired. but a side from that we should be open to learning other forms of communication for ourselves also.

Sign language is fascinating and yet, you are right, not many people are proficient in it. Of course, many people go all of their lives without a need for signing, so that is understandable.
Older people have access to better hearing aids to assist in hearing. Also the cochlear implant made it possible for many more people to hear.
Then, there are the logistics of keeping up with this skill even if you did have it. Without someone to practice with, what little bit I used to known has been long gone.
Good luck with your course, I hope you have fun learning.

Thanks
