How long do credit card companies keep a record of purchases?

I took a quick look at my transaction history from three years ago and they still have records of what I bought for Christmas that year. I think they hold that information for about seven years but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone know?

I would assume 7 years. That is how long they tell people to hold on to their records for 7 years, and that is also as far as they will go back on an audit, so I would assume 7 years. But really I am not sure that is just and educated assumption.

my friend who is working on a credit card company told me that they still kept records on credit card transactions 15 years ago. they have a database who stores all of them.

As far as I know the standard for any business is that financial records are kept for 7 years. If you were to be audited by the IRS you might need copies of your credit card statements, so I would imagine that they keep them for that amount of time for that reason.
