Would you do this?

A lady walked into the Burlington Coat Factory in a neighboring town from me. She claimed she wanted to treat every customer to $500 worth of merchandise, because she had won the lottery. She maxed out her debit card, and left to go cash a $50.000 check, and never returned. The people were furious and trashed the store, destroying the merchandise and other items. The store had to close for a day and a half. It turns out the woman had a mental illness and did not win any money. They are pressing charges on her, but they aren't sure for what yet. I think the people that destroyed things should have been arrested and made to reimburse the store for damages. Would you destroy merchandise if this would have happened to you? How do you think this should be handled?

So funny but sierous too. Nope woldnt trash the store but would be mad if I had just picked out that mch worth of clothes. They need to put her in a home so she dont do it again. This was probably a dream that she wanted to do when and if she ever hit it big

Are those people nuts?! It wasn`t the stores fault. Sure I wuld be upset if someone pulled something like that but I wouldn`t trash the doggone store! The lady will probably go to a mental hospital, but the store hopefully can press charges on all the people that trashed the store too. They should have locked the doors and made them all clean it up while the cops were on the way to arrest them all.

I sure think the customers are responsible on that one. The store did nothing to them. I hope they arrested alot of them. They didn't say on the news though.

Good grief!! Now adults acting like spoiled brats! What is this world coming to? What is wrong with people these days? Can't they see a sick minded person when they see one? She sounds a lot like the previous renters that my parents had but a more giving one though. It's no wonder I'm feeling this world is coming to an end as we speak. It's getting too corrupt.

I might have been upset, but yet, I didn't have that much in the first place. I would not feel that I had the right to destroy the store because she did not come back.

I think it is the people that trashed the store that are nuts, not the woman that offered to treat every person to $500 worth of merchandise. I was always brought up to believe that when something sounds too good to be true then it probably isn't true and if someone offered to buy me $500 worth of anything it is too good to be true. I wouldn't believe that it was true until I had it in my hands and in my own car. In this situation I think they are trying to prosecute the wrong person. It is not the woman that is mentally imbalanced that is guilty of anything, it is the people in the store who took out their frustration on the store that are guilty of something.

...Hi Thoroughrob, What a story. First the woman was crazy, but no one knew before hand. She, if and when they find her, will get probation or something, because she is mentally challenged. Next of all, the store was negligent, taking her word and not verifying and attaching the amount of money she wanted to spend, before and not after she charged the expense. The people who displayed outrage, to the point of destroying the store, are entirely responsible for their actions, unless they try to claim insanity :o). They should all be put in jail for whatever time the judge deems is appropriate, for destruction of, property, and also made to pay for the damages. We are not living in the jungle, and there are laws. But the store is the biggest culprit in all of this, for allowing this woman to run around getting people excited about receiving some free stuff and then taking it away from them. Bad business. They have insurance, and perhaps some supervisor should have let the people have the stuff, and wrote it off to a scam, or misappropriation or something covered under their insurance. Could have had a lot of goodwill, if it would be legal to do that. Interesting report. Take care.

Wow!! This is unreal. Someone goes into a store and claims to have won the Lottery, and offers to treat every customer to $500 worth of merchandise, and the people in the Store and the Employees believed her? Who got the stuff that she maxed her card on? The people who trashed the Store should be held responsible for the damages more than this lady. It is not her fault people believed her, and got angry. Seriously if something like this was to happen to me in a Store I would want proof first before believing something like this for sure. I guess it only goes to show sometimes people will believe anything and then act Crazy if things do not happen.

I agree with you. I think these people should be arrested and made to pay for the damages. These people seem to have as much of a mental problem as the crazy lady.

I had not heard about this, Thoroughrob, until my daughter mentioned the story to me last night. I still have not gotten the complete story, but I must say the customers in the store acted very childishly, not to mention criminally. You are absolutely right that they should be made to reimburse the store for the damage they caused. If the woman is truly mentally ill I doubt that they will do anything to her. She obviously needs a lot of help.

The woman walked in the store and told everyone that she had been blessed by winning the lottery and wanted to share with everyone so she was going to pay for $500 worth of merchandise for every customer.

What the hell is wrong with people?! I don't understand destroying someone's property just because an unbelievable freebie turned out to be false. Even with the unemployment and tough times here in our state, I find it almost unbelievable that people should behave like this. Gerald Calente said it best: "when the people lose everything and they have nothing to lose, they lose it." I think we're all being driven into a corner and going nuts. I hope those people were arrested? They certainly should have to make some kind of repayment, maybe in voluntary labor if they have no money. Oops, I hear Glenn Beck covering this right now! He just said that when you promise people a bunch of free stuff like Obama did and is, people will snap when denied. It will be interesting to hear his take on it.

I agree with you the people that did the damage should have been the ones that were arrested. They had no right destroying property, and they had no right getting mad because they did not get something for FREE. The woman should get some kind of treatment for being ill., and she can also be charged with inciting a riot. and go to jail for it.

I heard about this but I didn't know the customers destroyed the store. I can't imagine first of all being in this store and believing this person would do this for everyone. I would think just seeing the person I would know that she was mentally ill or just plain lying. I can't believe so many people would fall for this but then also turn around and destroy the store. How inmature and a tell tell sign about the mentality of people these days. Very strange and I think the customers who destroyed merchandise should be libel too pay for damages too.

I think the store should have stopped her in the beginning. But as they did not, it is up to Burlington and the police to decide who should be charged. The store must not have been in a very good neighborhood, as I cannot imagine any of my neighbors acting like that. It was very wrong of them to take it out on the store. The shoppers did not lose anything that actually belonged to them, so they had no right to become angry. They were wrong to try to take advantage of a crazy person. They should have known she was unstable when she offered them lavish gifts and they should have politely refused them. I don't understand people who think they are entitled to something for nothing.

I wouldn't. I mean, how sure am I that the person who just proclaimed she's treating me (a complete stranger at that) isn't bluffing, right? I know it's a bad joke, but why would you trash a place that a person didn't own? It's just like those joking series where they fool people. They were never sued for that (I guess most of them though). Anyone who's going out to proclaim she's treating people is a mental case.

Wow! I'd think that the people doing the damage should be the ones being arrested! Okay, the woman was crazy but that didn't have anything to do with the store so why did these people trash the store??? If someone came up to me and said they wanted to buy me $500 worth of merchandise, I'd say, okay, sure, but would have to wonder about the mental stability of that person. If she left and never returned, there would be no reason on Earth for me to get angry or trash the store. If someone offered to pay me $500 for work done and I did that work but the person never showed up to pay me, I'd be VERY angry but, again, there would be no reason to trash anything! That "mob mentality" is scary. All it takes is one or a few people to start acting insane (not the woman but the people trashing the place) for others to get swept up in the momentum. If that were to happen with me in the store, I'd have to leave... fast! I'd hold no ill will toward that woman, either. If anything, I'd have to pity her. She should not have been charged with anything!

It’s uncanny how spoilt people can be! Arrest and charge the lot of them, I say! Some crazy woman promises them free stuff and doesn’t make good on her promise so let us all trash the store! What are they...Children? Come to think of it I don’t think my seven year old would react like that…As far as the woman is concerned I think she needs to go to a psychiatric facility as soon as possible. To answer your question, if it were me, yes I would be disappointed but not surprised because come now, what are the chances of someone coming along and treating you to $500 worth of stuff?

The lady should be arrested and charged for sure but she would probably just end up being committed to a mental institution for observation. The idiots in the store are the real offenders though. They committed more of a crime than she did by trashing the store when they had nothing to do with it whatsoever. It wasn't the store's fault, so they proved how greedy and stupid some people can be and decided to destroy the store because they were mad at the lady because she didn't hand them free cash as promised. If they can track them down, these people should be arrested and charged with destruction of property at least. It's just inexcusable behavior and they shouldn't be let off without having to answer for it.
