Are protein shakes worth it for me to get?

Ok, heres a little background on me, im 20, male, weigh about 61kg, thats about 135lbs, im 5ft 10inches. Ideally i'd like to gain about 15lbs. I've been about the same height and weight since i was 15. I've just started using weights about a month ago and im using 10kg dumbells now. And no, i can't use heavier weights. I also do press ups, sits ups. So i bought some protein shake, Sci-MX Mass System to be exact. 5kg of it for £47.25, thats $77 for the Americans reading this. 5kg equates to about 35 shakes. Each shake contains 620 calories, 100g of complex carbohydrate and 46g of protein and 4g of fat when mixed with water. Although i have them with skimmed milk, which takes it up to 60g of protein, 760 calories and 120g of carbs. So with the milk, that comes to about £1.62 ($2.65) per shake. Good value or should i just try to eat more food instead? I currently have one a day in addition to my regular meals so i would have to eat an extra meal to replace it.

Its good to take protein shakes but protein shakes alone cannot make your goal. You have to eat more calories from natural food sources to gain weight. You have to eat atleast 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound body weight a day.So for you it is 135 grams of protein a day.Eat 2-3 grams of carbohydrates per pound bodyweight each day ie start with 2 grams and when you stop gaining weight switch to 3 grms.Good Luck!

Yea i know they're only a supplement. I have no idea how much protein i eat everyday, i try to eat things that are high in protein, low in saturated fat and fairly cheap as im a student. And i have no idea how much i currently weigh because i dont have any scales! I dont think ive gained much though.

Use this to know how much you are getting 3 ounce of fish or chicken is about the size of the palm of your hand or a deck of cards and 31/2 ounce chicken or fish contains 28-30 grams of protein. 1/2 cup rice or pasta is is about the size of a small computer mouse and i cup rice gives 45 grams of carbohydrates. Its so important to know your progress so its better to buy a bathroom scale and its available at a cheaper rate.

I would try to eat more food instead. I just drink chocolate soymilk instead of those protein shakes. Much cheaper and I've read a lot about it being close to just as good. You are pretty skinny though. I don't need to gain weight, I actually need to lose some.
