Do you find that yawning is contagious?

or maybe it's just me. Yawning is triggered either by fatigue or boredom or just by being sleepy. I notice that if someone yawns in a crowd, the other will follow suit. Can there be a scientific explanation for this one. any idea?

Definitely! Isn't the human brain weird? Evidently it's contagious in chimpanzees as well, so they're at least as strange as we are! Brain scans have found that this is an unconscious process, because we are merely mirroring the actions that we see in others. http://www.world-science.net/exclusives/050309_yawnfrm.htm

mirroring the actions that we see is an interesting description. Maybe it is an automatic and unconcious reaction of our brain, you are right there laurie. thanks!

manong05 yes it is indeed contagious and if you yawn in an auditorium you will soon see a whole slew of people also yawning. I think we subconsciously do imitate others. For example my hubby and I tried something one day as a project for our psychology class.we went to a street corner and stood just looking up in the sky,Soon three other people joined us, then still more until there were seven people all looking up into the sky and nobody even knew what we were looking for. we left while all the rest were trying to figure out what we were looking at. he he he.
