I deserved that ticket, geez...

For years I was one of those obnoxious people who never got a ticket. And then one morning, coming off of a bad night's sleep, and knowing there was a cop behind me, I made a left turn way to closely in front of an oncoming car. The cop wasn't at all sympathetic about the bad night's sleep or my explanation that I was paying more attention to him and his lights behind me (he was pulling over the person in front of me) than to what was in front. He even gave me the wrong lecture. How annoying is that. But I did deserve the ticket. Why, oh why I can't be one of those silver tongued devils who talk cops out of writing tickets, I don't know, but there it is. This morning, again, some idiot went through the crosswalk with the school crossing guard in it and just as the children were about to start crossing. And so I started a mini rant about people who do that and if they're in that much of a hurry they should leave home earlier and so on. Tomorrow there will no doubt be a police presence at that crossing. And then after the children had been dropped off, I drove to work. The first stop sign after the school has a four way stop, but the one to the left is a parking lot and it is pretty rare that somebody comes out from that side. At any rate when I went through the intersection, there was somebody coming out of that parking lot and I'm afraid I cut them off. It wasn't close or anything, but no doubt that person was mighty annoyed and me and maybe even had a mini rant of their own. So I had a little laugh at myself and drove on. That was just one of many (not TOO many, I am a pretty safe driver) occasions where I definitely deserved a ticket, but there were no police around to give me one. Like I said, I'm a pretty safe driver. I don't exceed the speed limit much (like no more than 5 MPH), I don't deliberately run stop signs or red lights, I generally pay attention. But I do make idiot mistakes. So that is my ticket story and my "I deserved a ticket but didn't get one" story. What are your ticket stories? Driving faults?

Oh my driving record isn't even pretty! I've had 2 speeding tickets, 2 tickets for non inspection, and a few others for various things like having a head light out, muffler too loud, brake lights out, etc etc. Every single time I've ever been pulled over has been for speeding! Sometimes I was able to talk myself out of it... and I never said anything too fancy either, just a simple "Oh sorry officer, wasn't paying enough attention". Other times I was let off with just the inspection or lights out ticket which isn't nearly as bad. Thankfully though I haven't been pulled over in a long time. My last ticket was about 4 or 5 years ago (although I did get a non-inspection ticket last year, but I wasn't pulled over that time, it was a road block I couldn't avoid). I'm becoming a safer driver as I get older.

Happens to all of us. In my case, it wasn't so much speed and such as not being able to judge distances and timing on lights. The day I got my license I was very lucky not to get a ticket because of a timing issue on a red light.

I was a lead foot for many years as well. I had bought cop cars at auctions. Those things are FAST! Anyhow I almost lost my license indefinitely due to 13 speed tickets in a years time. I drive the speed limit now. Most times anyhow. The costs of the tickets as well as increase in insurance due to those moving violations hurt badly. My insiurance tripled in one years time to over $1500 a year. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Oh yes, I can see that. Thankfully at the time I got the ticket, the car and insurance were in hubby's parent's names, I was not on the policy, so nobody's rates went up. Now that I do have my name on a policy, it's been so long since my last ticket that it doesn't matter anymore.

This isn't a driving story, but it does involve a cop and a car, so I am counting it. Back several years ago, there was a little deli that I used to stop at on a fairly regular basis. They had delicious cheesecake that was pretty addicting. Since I went in there so often, the girl behind the counter and I would engage in small talk. On the day in question, I had gone inside and gotten a coffee and slice of cheesecake, and I even told the girl behind the counter that I was waiting for a call from a particular guy. As I got back inside my car to leave, I got the anticipated phone call. I was sitting in the parking lot talking on the phone, when somebody rapped on my window. It scared the crap out of me, but when I looked up it was a cop. I quickly got off the phone and rolled down the window to find out what the cop wanted. Apparently, the girl in the shop had called the cops, because I had been sitting in front of the shop laughing and "talking to myself" for quite a while. I told the cop that I didn't realize that I wasn't allowed to sit in a parking lot and talk on the phone, but I thought it was better to do that than drive and talk, even though I did have a "hands-free" device. He said that it wasn't illegal and that I had made the right choice, but apparently the girl behind the counter was "worried about my state of mind", because the hands-free device made it seem like I was just acting crazy. He suggested that the next time I might want to have an extended conversation in a more private area, but he did say that he was sorry for the intrusion. Needless to say, I didn't go back to that shop for quite a while, but when I did my breakfast was "on the house".

Hey Dawn. I've only been pulled over by a cop once so far in all the years I've been driving (knock on wood). And I definitely deserved the ticket. My oldest, who was about 3 or 4 at the time, had a meltdown while I was driving and I wanted to get home quick. So I sped up. I don't remember how fast I was going, but I think it was something like 25 miles over the speed limit. That wasn't the worst part of it though. I had been driving my in-laws car (long story). Well, not only did they not have insurance for it, but it wasn't registered in their names. Eek! I was so scared. I thought for sure I'd be going down... For some reason though the cop let me go with a warning. I don't know why he did, but I sure was grateful! Maybe it was because I had a screaming toddler in the backseat and he felt sorry for me. Or maybe it's because I kept calling him sir after every sentence. LOL Sure my driving record is clean (knock on wood again), but he didn't have to do what he did. My husband on the other hand thinks it was because of my boobies. LOL Another time I deserved a ticket was when my husband was driving. Yep, even though he was the one driving I'm the one that deserved it. I had been in labor with our youngest son and we were at a red light downtown heading to the hospital. We had to turn left, but yield to the oncoming traffic when the light was green, so we missed our chance the first time around. As the contractions were very strong at that point I told my husband to run it as soon as the light turned red again. I actually prepared him for it during our few minutes at the stoplight telling him he'd have to run it when it turned red next because I knew we'd never make the turn if we kept waiting for the light to be green. We'd be stuck there for who knows how long. And I wasn't about to have my baby in the car, especially with being so close to the hospital. Fortunately no cops were around so we didn't get a ticket. Something tells me we would have gotten out of it though, considering the circumstances. LOL I hate to admit it, but I go over the speed limit a little more than you do. I generally go 5 miles over it, but go as much as 10. I kind of have to though, when the majority of the drivers around here drive so darn fast (and sometimes even faster than this). Heck, even the cops go faster than they should. And here there isn't an emergency or anything. LOL There are a couple of other stories I could share, but I'll save those for another time. Happy mylotting!

i'll have to give you a dad one (i don't drive).. some people up here love the winter because of where they have to place the sticker on the windshield,it can be easily hidden by snow if it's expired. anyway..dad let his slide quite sometime before finally being pulled over by a cop for something unrelated (plate light i think)..and the cop was actually laughing when he noticed how far expired it was. he said "well, you had a good long streak, didn't you?" dad goes "yup". the officer was actually a lot nicer than he could have been-it was 2 years over-but they all know people play that game.

Hi Dawn.. I think you are a pretty good driver by the looks of it. For me, I imagined a lot of times speeding on the road, and when I look at the meter, I was doing quite alright. I used to be a speed demon, but I suppose that is in the perspective of the bike. Nowadays, I have toned down tremendously, and I think it's best to stick to a safe driving approach. I would wanna live longer, enjoy life with my love ones and do good deeds always for as long as I can breathe in this world. Hopefully... I've gotten tickets before; on and off, heh...but it's been quite awhile...so I've been behaving since.

I have one, but it is long, and I am not entirely certain I can give it justice. When I was a cute young newly wed I lived outside of San Diego. Hubby went to work on the ship daily, riding with a friend, and I picked him up, as we had one car, and I needed it from time to time. To get on the interstate to go to the Base, you had to start south, make a loop, all the while accelerating and go north. I lived in a neighborhood where I was distinctly minority, I was shy, I got a lot of cat calls and harassment one day as I was running late so I took off like crazy onto that highway. I realized I had not put on my seat belt, so I drove with my knees trying to do that. Wobbled a lot, accelerated too much, and got pulled over. Told my story to the cop, who made the comment that I was not any older than his daughter, and he let me go with a warning to buckle up before I started the car in the future.

One of these days that will bite my husband in the butt. He can't stand backing up with a shoulder belt across his neck, so he puts his seat belt on after he's back in drive. Sometimes he forgets!

Mine made me believe I was on an episode of "COPS". I was speeding. cOMING HOME FROM WORK i Had the sunroof opened with the stereo blasting full bore. Cars were pulling over so I did not need check for cars as I passed them. Then suddenly, I heard the sirens. 2 sets of lights behind me. I pulled over. Then I saw them, one car alongside me, one in front, one in back, and one a little further ahead of me. Cops crouched behind doors with shotguns drawn. i WAS TOLD TO REACH OUT THE WINDOW AND SET MY HANDS ON THE ROOF. tHERN TOLD TO REMOVE THE KEYS WITH MY LEFT HAND. aS i DID THIS I was yanked from the car, hog tied with plastic straps and thrown in the back seat of the State Troopers car. After they ran a check on me, the undid my legs and apologized as they had no idea who I was and did it for their safety and mine. All told I was released, but tickets for speeding, edangering life and property, and reckless driving. Lost my license for 3 months and a HEFTY fine. Luckily I was freed as I could have gone to jail and could have been charged with evading officers as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Hi Dawn...I answered this question a while back so I won't go into details about why I was speeding and how I got caught, suffice to say I did. It was my first offence and happened about 20 years ago, I'd had my license about 12 years. The officer suggested I write a letter to the guy in charge of traffic offences so I did. I wrote saying I had been booked and the details and that I was very sorry for what I had done. I said how proud I was of my clean driving record and promised I would never do anything like that again...it was a pathetic letter...lol. I received a letter back telling me that in lieu of my excellent driving record there would be no fine, no points loss and no official warning recorded. I was encouraged to abide by the rules in future. YAY! Five years ago, I was again caught, this time by a camera as I approached a country town on a long straight stretch of road. I received a fine in the mail. Again I wrote, admitted my fault, pat myself on the back for a 29 tear clean record and promised faithfully to never do it again (there was no record of my previous offence after all). I was let off again. Go me.

I have only had one ticket, back in Feb. '97. It was for me rear ending a high school girl. I had just picked up my oldest two kids from school, and was heading home in the pouring rain, when a teenage girl in front of me decided she was gonna turn off the main road, without signaling, etc. I slammed on the brakes but still hit her in the a$$.. I was pretty heated when I was told I was in fault. What made me feel better though, was my Pathfinder did smash in the rear of her little sports car.

People not using their turn signals is my biggest pet peeve of drivers. It does make me wanna smack them in the rear just to show them, what it means to take two seconds to raise your arm to push up or pull down to turn your turn signal on.

hi dawnald well since I don't drive I have never get tickets but my husband had garnered several and as he had a habit of making taxi stops, that is just sliding to a semi stop I am sure he deserved more, but after having paid for his last ticket I was a bit ticked off. so when our pickup had to be in the shop for awhile for repairs, I even told him at least now you cannot get a ticket. Oh boy was I wrong. He came home with a ticket, for what I asked? For jaywalking he said. I sat down, ticked off , then started to laugh. He said, why are you laughing? I said, because you are the only person I know who can get a ticket when your damned car is in the garage. So then we both laughed, and this time he had to pay the ticket.

Hi dawn I was driving one fall late afternoon from spending the weekend with my husband. AT that time he was working out of town and didnt get to come home at all, so I would go to him on the weekends. We had a toy poodle at the time and I had bought him a car seat for dogs. I was nice by putting him in the backseat in his carseat. I was just driving along and all of a sudden there is those blue lights. I pulled over. Well he did his little request and then ask why was I driving so fast. A thousands reasons went thru my head. I finally just said " Officer I have no excuse other than being tired and ready to go home. He then asked me if my baby was fasten in the carseat. I said BABY..and he leaned over and saw that I had a dog. He started laughing and couldn't belive that I had a carseat for my dog. I never got a ticket...Yeaaaaaa for the doggie carseat...

Hi Dawnald, I've had one ticket in my 36 years of driving. I admit I was speeding and did deserve the ticket. I have talked my way out of several tickets when I was younger. It was easy for me because my uncle was Chief of Police in out town.LOL I know this is wrong but, being a young teen when an officer ask if I was related to the Chief when I told them he was my uncle they would let me go with a warning.

I currently average about 20,000kms per year but that figure was more like 30,000-40,000 for many years. In that time I have only received one speeding ticket and that was because my hubby urged me to pass a vehicle carrying a load of kayaks. He didn't want one coming adrift and slicing off his head! I was on a two-lane highway so it was perfectly safe, but I DID exceed the speed limit. Now I have a cruise control and it is set at 100kph or the speed limit. Cars fly past me but I prefer to be legal. Sure, I know that we all probably break at least one road rule most times we drive, and I know I do, but speeding isn't one I break knowingly.

I did the same as you.....I was going to the post office and had just left the bank ....the light was turning yellow and I was kinda in the intersection a little bit so just stepped on it making a left turn....well I thought the oncoming car would stop....or that we wouldn't have a collision as he was too far ahead of me......well he ran the yellow too just missing me.....so I go on my way and soon there are flashing lights behind me at the drive up box outside the post office....I didn't get a ticket....but I probably should have! LOL....there have been others but this is the closest I got!

lol I once got a ticket for bald tires, no, I didn't have bald tires and didn't get the ticket for that either, but I was pulled over for the bald tires. Seems a CHP officer was just looking to write tickets one day, and pulled me over because he could tell my tires were bald while I was driving at 60 mph! Well, after I stopped, and he came up to start the process, I asked him what I did, and he actually told me, "I pulled you over because I noticed that one of your tires is bad!" Well, I had just bought 4 new tires within the hour and was heading towards the next town, so I knew they weren't bad! I told him this, and he said, "I saw the wear spot coming around each time on your wheel, so I know they're bald!" "Okay", I told him, "Would you show me the tire?" I got out, and we both went to the 'offending' tire, and guess what? One of the new tire stickers hadn't been taken off of one tire, and that sticker stayed on the tire, even at freeway speed, and that is what he had seen. Being a good officer, we both could have laughed this one off, I could have gone on with no problem, and he could have had another funny story, but seeing that he wasn't a very nice guy, he proceeds to give me a safety inspection for the time he had wasted. No, he was wasting my time! He checked the lights, the blinkers, the tabs, the tires, the wipers, yada, yada, yada, and finally checked my horn, which worked right up until he wanted me to honk. Guess what? Yep, it didn't, so he wrote me a fix-it ticket, requiring me to appear at the Highway Patrol station within 14 days, and then had the audacity to say, "Have a nice day!" I'm already over an hour behind, for something I didn't do, he has to feel better, and when he leaves, I hit the horn, and - yes, it works! lol Needless to say I went to the station in a few days, and got an officer to sign off that the horn worked. All because an officer of the 'law' just had to give some ticket, any ticket! I'm not saying I haven't received tickets for which I was deserving, but this one bothered me for years! By the way, I received 4 speeding tickets the first week I ever drove as a teenager. lol
