Well, it is happened to me. At first they only block most of adult site, and well, i actually doesn't really mind this because i hardly ever access those site from office. But later, they start to block most of game site, well, although i kinda disagree with this, but still i understand the reason. But then, they start blocking most of social networking site and forum. This seem make most of employee in the office angry. Although the IT Dept only following order, but it seem, most of employee blame them for this. So to make peace with them, they made the block only happened from 9 am to 4 pm. So we have a social networking site active at one hour after work hour start, and one hour before the work hour start. Well, at least this can please most of the employee. Anyway, how about the block policy in your office? Is it the same? Is it block only for certain hour? What kind of site that it is block? Thanks

I think your company is quite flexible on this matter and they really listen to the employees unlike at my previous work place. Most of the workers would log into Facebook even during working hours and sometimes, they updated their status and I think those at the high management levels have seen the time on when they updated their status. So, they have instructed the IT Dept to block the site. It didn't really matter to me though because I was always busy with my work as I have to deal with the guests and I have no time to access the internet. I could access them at home, so the action has no effect on me. However, the manager in my department kept asking the IT Manager how to unblock the site! Well, like your IT people, they were only following orders, but they did not dare to suggest such policy like yours. So, they have secretly shared how to view the site, but with limited access where they could not comment.

Well, it doesn't matter to me at all. I don't really care what they are complaining about their jobs on Facebook during office hours because I could still read all those status later. I know it's a way of de-stress oneself, but sometimes if every little thing they want to whine and update on their walls, it is as if they are working with Facebook instead of clearing their workloads.

Yes, well every body has their own way to relieve it's stress and every one can do a different thing to having fun. I and most people usually like to see other whine about their job, and give comment about it, a funny comment that will make the smile. If i do that after work hour, usually the time is off and my comment seem less interesting anymore since they not in that position anymore. Anyway, thanks for responding to this discussion.

O i see. Yes, the IT dept is kinda in a harsh position since they actually want everybody to keep accessing facebook, but at the same time, the higher up want them to make sure the employee couldn't have access to the facebook. Anyway, too bad for you not to be able to access facebook at office hour since usually you will see a lot of people complaining about their job at that hour in facebook.

Well it you know it then you should do that, but make sure no one know that you are able to unblock it or else you are into a serious trouble. Well what ever the reason, i don;t think there should be over protective about what site an employee could or not could visit. Thanks

The company I work in do not have an IT department so no one knows how to regulate the internet access here in the office. We have a wifi router so everyone just access the internet with their laptop. My boss is not really that strict with the use of internet, as long as work is getting done and the company is not affected by the use of internet. I work in the accounting department, most of the people here are too busy trying to meet the deadlines that the only things they use the internet for is email and instant messengers.

Well it is good to hear that. It is fun to have a freedom like you have. What important is getting our work done. After our work done, we can use whatever we want we our free time, and accessing internet is one of them. I just hope my company start to think that way too.

As far as I know, more and more companies have blocked Facebook and other social network websites. It is really of no matter whether the adult sites are blocked or not. When your company try to block most os game sites, perhaps they may want to stop you from wasting time on these games. When it comes to social network sites, from the point view of company, they think that these social websites can represent a security risk if used carelessly. Unless there's a work purpose, many firms do not see any reason why staff should need to access them during work time. In my office, all social network sites have been blocked, such Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and so on.

Well, maybe every person has different view about think. It just simply sad if they block facebook because they afraid of security risk since now, a tools like blackbery and gprs / 3g / 3.5g is common and people still can do facebook anytime they want. But still, i really prefer to use facebook from PC instead accessing it from mobile device.

Wow, that is so sad. I think a company shouldn't block any news site since their employee actually need news too. With knowing what happened in the world / country many people can decide what to do with their job. Anyway, that is a very bad policy i think. Thanks for responding.

good topic boy.... seems like what is happening in your office is also happening in our office. these auditors of ours were very "sipsip" people. they do nothing but finding wrong with the employees. my point is that although these are their work, but it is unfair for the employees. internet connection of the office, whether it is used or not the bill is just the same. it was installed to be used, isn't it? good for you because you have the hour to socialize but in our office all social networking sites, youtube, and others were blocked.

They block every kind of internet site at my job, except for ones needed to perform the job, of course. It's unfair in my eyes too, in a way, because I feel like if we're done with the work at hand - we should be able to do what we please until we get more work. Of course - there are lines to be drawn, and obviously.. Looking at adult sites and whatnot is ALWAYS inappropriate in the workplace! But checking your facebook or email doesn't seem all that inappropriate to me. My job has ALL sites blocked - social networking, MyLot, adult sites too I would imagine.. But I just recently found a way to get on the 'net. . I'm sure a lot of people abused the priveledge, and that's why your bosses ended up blocking it. I'm sure that's what happened!

Yes, i am very agree with you. Why bother? If we can finish all our job, then there is nothing wrong with playing a social networking site once in a while to relieve some stress. Anyway, even if they block the site, every body has their own way to slacking off. So it is doesn't really matter at all. But i agree with adult site or malware site should be block since it is really are not inappropriate to access it from office. Thanks for responding to this very discussion. I like how you share your experience with us.

I haven't tried to work in an office. But I remember back when I was a student when friendster is really a fad. The school offers free internet use for the student but then social networking sites are blocked. Maybe because we are inside the school, and we aren't supposed to do those things inside and use the service for research purposes only. So back then all we can use is the search engines.

O I see, well yes, in school it is even more unfair since i don't think accessing social networking site will take a lot of time. In my college years, the Campus actually never block any web site at all, expect, the adult site off course. So the most time i really enjoy internet is to access it from the campus. And it is even have the fastest speed that i ever met. I think it is about 10 mbps. ( It is quite a fast connection in my country ), because most of house computer usually only have speed about 500 kbps to 1 mbps ( bit not Byte ). Thanks for responding in this discussion.
