Will you be comfortable consulting a doctor who smokes heavily?

I accompanied my co-worker to see a doctor after seeing him not feeling well in the jobsite. We went to a clinic not far from where we work and when we opened the clinic door, we were greeted by an obnoxious smell and lo and behold the doctor was smoking and in front of him was an overflowing ashtray. My co-worker ask me to take him to a different clinic. He said he was not comfortable seeing that doctor. Will you feel the same way? Why?

There will come a time when that doctor stops smoking because he would no longer be earning money because he is driving his patients away... lol. I surely wouldn't be comfortable seeing that doctor. How would I be able to believe what he advises about good health when he himself is killing himself? hahaha.. The smell of smoke in an enclosed area is surely disgusting and very offensive. And surely his breath, too!

I will not approach such doctor in the first place. How can he or she treat me if he or she is doing something that makes me sick? Except if it is an emergency case. I will surely look for a doctor that has a healthy living to consult with.

In emergency cases and when there are no other doctors around, we might be left with no other choice but given options, I doubt if we will find a doctor like that attractive.

And the obnoxious smell of the clinic is a disappointment too. It just scares the patients away.

And I guess many have stopped seeing him too. He cannot build a good reputation with a habit like that.

Well if he really is the best doctor in his field why not. Doctors are people too who are prone to these things. Well as long as he don't advice me to stop smoking I would belive him.

Well if he is the best doctor around and for lack of other alternatives to go to, we might be left with no other choice but see him. As long as he doesn't smoke while doing a diagnosis and examination. enjoy!

To be honest I would actually be really scared because I would not want a doctor who smokes and could pass on something in my body. Since I dont smoke and dont feel that comfortable around smokers, I would seek for a different doctor or just ask if I can see another doctor and if he/she asks why, I would tell them why. They have yellow fingers when they smoke and then when they touch me, it will just pass on.

It is scary, you're right. Just the sight of an overflowing ashtray is disgusting enough.

if it doesn't affect in anyway his diagnosis, you are right in being willing to visit a smoking doctor.

I think so.i would n't see a doctor like that one.Doctor have much knowledge of health.he don't care about himself, could he care about his patients?clinic should be a clean place.if it's dirty like that. How could we believe him?

He doesn't have the credibility and not a good role model. If he is not concerned with his own health how can he be serious enough in dealing with people's health problems. cheers!

If I were in the place of your friend, I would do the same thing. I wouldn't want to receive treatment from someone who does not even take care of himself. Doctor's are supposed to set the example. I wouldn't want him to pass off anything bad to me considering that he probably lack hygiene for smoking inside the building.

Precisely, it is not only a question of hygiene but ethics as well. cheers!

I will also feel the same. I guess it is unethical for that doctor to do that. I mean, I don't mind if he smoke, but at least he knows when or where. If he's doing his job, I guess it is not proper for him to do that.

As I said in my earlier comment, it is really unethical. If he has a low regard for his profession, he must at least show his patients respect for not all people smoke. cheers!
