hi friends, i have to say my dear friends, this habbit comes from my hubby, while coming from outside we should wash our hands and legs with liquid soap or any soap,, otherwise, my hubby won't allow to do anything, you know this is a good habbit, when we clean our hands and legs we will not get infections from outsiders right, like flews etc.., ok my dear friends, do you have this habbit, if so, please post your valuable comments here. thankyou, have a nice day.

Hi neelima, Washing the legs and hands after coming from outside is an ancient practice in our state. Keeping the water in a vessel in front of the house is an old custom and now the water tap is there infront of the house for washing the legs. This is the tradition in villages. Now I am living in a city and the habit depends on the season, if it is summer season I will prefer to wash my legs and hands after entering to the home. If it is in winter season I won’t prefer to wash my legs but definitely I will wash my hands with soap irrespective of the season and it is very necessary for our good health.

kindi (jug) - This jug is keep infront of the house for the purpose of washing legs.
Hi Hately, you misunderstood the word ‘vessel’, or I might be used a wrong word. Actually the word in our language is 'kindi' and I am adding an image for your reference. In earlier stage (long ago) people were walk on bare foot and it is very necessary to wash the legs before entering the home. So this ‘kindi’ should be there infront of the house for washing legs. There were not much transportation also available in that time so the tradition is apt for that situation. I am adding a ling to know more about the ‘kindi’. http://newshopper.sulekha.com/blogs/post/2009/09/kindi-the-water-dispenser.htm

if the water were in a vessel all your washing would be in vain as the vessel of water after a short while will be thoroughly'contaiminated with germs. so what is the point? seems like a useless tradition to me.

what on earth have legs got to do with germs? that would mean you would have to almost take a shower every time you go in and out of your house, is that not being a bit paranoid?

Wahing legs is must because the roads are not that clean.. It will be full of Dust which carry some germs.. If with out washing legs If you sit on sofa or bed with your legs up on that.. next time you might touch the same bed or sofa with your hands.. so you get those germs on your hands.. So again the risk of getting sick.. So I dont think washing legs as soon as coming from outside is something not needed.. So friend I think you got the answer..

We always keep a bottle of hand sanitizer right inside the doorway, so whenever we come in, we take some. My mom and dad are REALLY big on sanitation, and hand sanitizer seems the quickest and easiest way to solve all of it. It's a good habit to have, as it does prevent many diseases and infections. We also have a little pomeranian puppy now, so every once in a while we have to use some hand sanitizer, as she loves to go outside and roll around in the grass=).

Hi neelimaravi, after the dreadful Sars outbreak years back, my husband has formed the good habit to wash his hands thoroughly with bar soap once back to home. He always hastens us to wash our hands as well. very often I would forget to wash mine. Since we seldom go out wearing short pants therefore we usually don’t wash our legs. Yeah, washing our hands is the way to keep ourselves away from the infections of certain diseases Other than to keep our hands and legs clean and hygienic we do have to avoid using public facilities like public phones, bar soaps in the public toilet and etc. Yeah, germs like harboring in such stuffs. Besides, we do have to take healthy foods and drink the required amount of water. We should have regular physical exercise as well as to have enough sleep to keep our body healthy and fit. By doing so we then could boost our immune system to fight against diseases Take care and happy posting!

I wash my hands frequently but my legs???? No...don't wash the legs all the time. I shower each morning ...that's it. This is actually the first time I've heard of anyone who washes their legs when they come in. Is that common where you live?
• India

hi sid, yes, this is the common way where we are living in, and it is so good for home also. thanks for your response, have a nice day.

hi neelimaravi yes I think its a really great habit now that 'we have this epidemic of swine flu especially. we should all wash our hands much more often, and really do wash them ,take time to soap and massage them thoroughly then rinse and dry. I would not go so far as to wash your legs as flu germs and most germs are spread from dirty hands going to your face and nose and mouth. Your legs really have nothing to do with unless you have been in the mud or slime. otherwise why not wait until you shower at bedtime. what have legs got to do with this unless the person is around pigs or dirty animals?better to wash hands and face. thats where the germs are spread.

I wash my hands often, especially with H1N1 going around my state and I have a very low immune system. However, I wash my legs only when I shower (so, like, daily. Sometimes more as I swim for physical therapy and exercise.) or take a bath. I mean, it's not like my legs come in contact with much important. (food, other people, etc.) I mean especially since I don't wear shorts that much, mostly just jeans.

hi kipluck, in your country there will be no pollution problem, that's why you don't know about this procedure, yaar, don't mistake me, i am just telling about the pollution problem, in india, so much dust, so, the germs, infections, will passon soon, and as well as our culture also. thanks for your response, have a nice day.

I don’t see the need to wash your legs every time you come back inside. The hands should be washed after touching animals and before eating and cooking but the legs are fine as far as I am concerned, unless one has been splashed with or rolling in mud or dirt...
• India
2 Nov 09
hi paula, how are you, yeah you are right why to wash our legs means, littlebit of sentiment you know, so, we have to wash both thanks for your response, have a nice day.

I also do that. I guess most Indians do that. It also has a lot to do with the climate. When we go out, we sweat and there are also dirt and pollution. I live in a city so some places can be really dirty or polluted. Washing my hands and legs have become a habit for me.

Yeah, i always do it especially if i am wearing a sandals and not a close shoes. I daily wash my legs, arms, neck and face. Before i do it, i see to myself that I already relax first my tired feet before washing it with water. Because if you been out for a long walk along then washing water immediately is bad as it would not be advisable as your feet would likely suffer from spasm or earlier arthritis.

I used to wash my hands upon arriveing home and change my clotes becasue my kids will be hugging and kissing me-- i am just so paranoid not to put their health at risk for any disease or illness. before going to bed i give myself a quick shower. I don't easily wash my feet. i give it a time to relax for wearing high heeled shoes/close shoes.

It is good to wash your hands and legs with soap when coming from outside. But I will wash my legs and hands in the tap that is situated near my main entrance, only in water. After going in, I will wash my hands in soup water and then only do something in the kitchen. On the road we would have stamped on dirty things. Some people will do some evil power removing thing and throw those articles like black thread, lemon, kumkum and green chillies on the three roads meeting place. If we stamp on them, the evil power may haunt on us. If we wash our legs, that will not come to our house. This is a superstition, which is followed in many places. Whether we believe or not, better to wash our legs, good for the leg.

Well, it depends where we went. I mean, if it's just around the corner to buy something, then I don't think it's necessary to wash hands and legs every time. But when it's from work and other activities outside where it's polluted, we do take a bath when we come home.

I regularly wash my hands especially if I was exposed outside. It is a must. Anything that our hands touched could cause us some disease. But with legs, uhmmm not really. Well, if I know that my feet/legs got exposed to some dirt I make sure to wash them and maybe I'll take a bath right away. Happy mylotting!
