hi all, i noticed today after only cleaning my silver necklace the other night, it was yet again black. i know it's from acid in the body, but what kinds of food give this result? or could it be something else causing it, i go through patches of it. any help would be great thanks all.

This known to be the process of oxidation, silver unlike gold are prone to this even our perspiration alone can accelerate this process.

Make sure to not wear it when getting wet,it is oxidizing that makes this appear. The only way to prevent this is to clean it good and be sure not to wear in water. Maybe it is not silver if you say you cleaned, it and it was back that way again.I have only heard of copper doing things of this nature. But I have been wrong before. Do you have any other symptoms besides the color on skin ? Such as little itchy bumps ,as some silver depending on the quality will cause this also.

yeah it's silver marked 925, i've had the necklace for a number of yrs now. but it's gets wet most days, while i'm at work. that water has salt in it, and i also walk to work so i guess everything is just building up. i did have a few bumps on me last week but didn't know where they came from, but they weren't near my necklace. mum said stress, my earrings are usually the thing that goes dirty. mums also got a silver tea set, she brought back from the u.k yrs ago. you clean it and it'll last for a few months before you need to do it again. thanks for the response

Silver Articles/ornaments needs polish on regular basis, orelse they turn into tan. The tanning will be high for the excessive heat bodies.

It is a chemical reaction. As far as acid in foods you can find it in oranges, grapefruit, tomatoes, pickles with vinegar or things with Vitamin C, vinegar, etc. in it. Ascorbic acid may be the ingredient name. Same thing as Vitamin C.

Hi friend According to my knowledge silver gets black because of some chemical reactions.. The oxidation reaction makes it black.. that is O2 oxygen element gets added with silver element and forms a oxidised compund which results in making silver metal black.. our silver ornaments when exposed to air and water gets oxidised slowly and turns black in colour.. I dont think its because of any food..
