I Just Love Salad...Lettuce, Tomato and....a FROG???????

I heard this on the news last night, how a woman got more than she bargained when she got groceries including a prepackaged bag of lettuce. The woman is Tracy Grimes of Sterling Heights Michigan who bought the packaged lettuce from a Kroger supermarket. She was all set to open it but noticed something moving inside...a small frog. Getting in touch with the news media right away, a news team came over to witness the event of her opening the bag of lettuce to verify that she wasn't making the story up. She also called up the Kroger representatives who stupidly told her to mail the package and frog back to them to get a refund...she didn't want to do that as she felt the frog would die en route in the mail..so instead, the frog was set free while the news team was there...you can see the article and a video at the link I provide. Uh...have any of you gotten more than you bargained for when buying food? http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/local/sterling-heights-family-discovers-frog-in-bag-of-lettuce

OMG why does it not surprise me this happened in Michigan? It is where I am from and from all the BS I have been dealing with lately this is not a shock. I have bought stuff and thought it was a real bargain only to realize the food was expired or the clothes had some awful stain on it it is life I guess. Good thing the local news was there they seem to be ignoring me

LOL--I know about expired food. But not from a supermarket. In the past, a neighbor thought she was helping out by given us her extra cans of soup and they sounded great, really nice flavors but then would notice the sell by date and it'd be two or three years expired! I hope you do an update about your trailer problem..keep at it and get the news media involved...write your congressman (or email)--most have websites with a "contact me" thing.

local news doesn't care I even contacted the one that is in this story and I guess we don't matter, the health department today finally called after 3 weeks of nothing only to tell me oh we have no way of getting a tester and if it is mold you have to pay for that,i have no money. I have tried emailing and calling even local news station with nothing as i said guess we are just trailer park trash to everyone in Michigan.

How about writing newspapers....sometimes if a story hits on the papers THEN the TV news catches the story--that's what happened to me few years ago...had a story about my mother and I and it caught the attention of the TV news...we were then interviewed by channel 2, 5, 7, 9, 47 and even Jeanne Moss of CNN interviewed our situation...hey why not contact CNN???

I heard this on the radio this morning. I was impressed to know that they are not seeking a monetary settlement for having a frog in that bag of salad. Letting the frog go was a decent thing to do.

I have not had anything unpleasant like that happen to me, but those who bought the Temptations box set that came out back in late 1993 / early 1994 got a surprise. On CD #2 or cassette #2, the listing only shows 25 tracks. However, there are really 26 tracks on the CD (or cassette). That "hidden" track was just the vocals of the song My Girl. However, if you listen very carefully, you can hear the actual music faintly in the background that was bleeding through their headphones. Also in the previous century, it did make big news (in our area) when someone found a scorpion - alive & well - in her batch of bananas. I don't remember the details, but I'm sure that she did go bananas over that.

I believe that she got the batch of bananas from a Waldbaum's, a supermarket chain that at the time, I remember being exclusively out on Long Island. I also remember being in high school at the time, so it must have been in the early 1980's.

LOL--I used to have a friend who had snakes and while I was intrigued by them could never sanction the idea of having them as a pet as they eat mice...would feel sorry for the mice

Yeah, me too. I have a frog as a pet already. Her name is Godzilla and she is an African clawed frog. She is six inches long and lives in a tank in my room. She eats goldfish! (Though I stopped feeding them to her because I felt sorry for the goldfish- now she eats bugs and worms. :-) Frogs make cool pets.

I haven't been blessed with a frog yet, but just yesterday I went to the grocery store to pick up some pasta that was on sale. It was a brand that I really like, and since it's not usually on sale, I was picking up quite a few in various forms and shapes. As I was continuing shopping, I noticed a bug on the bag, and I went to brush it off. But it wasn't ON the bag...it was IN the bag. They were in ALL the bags. I brought it to the attention of a floor manager after I'd put all my bags back. Out of curiosity, I went back today and they'd all been removed from the shelves, and I was happy to see that. I doubt if I'd ever step back into the store if they were all back on the shelves.

What kind of bugs? Usually if one has any kind of grain product for a long time one might get bowevils in it...like pasta, rice, flour--so maybe that's why it was on sale...maybe they were past their "best buy" date

They weren't boll weevils, I've seen those before. Also, the sell by date was still current, in fact it was good until various months of next year (depending on pasta shape). I'm not an expert in bugs, but they looked like earwigs, only tiny. If you look at this picture, attached, they looked like the insect pictured in the lower left hand corner. http://www.northville.k12.mi.us/hillside/insect/EX4.html If it is something in the earwig family, they're usually drawn to moisture. All of the pasta bags were still sealed and airtight, so it has to be something that was bagged with the products.

That is so nasty. And Kroger is so dumb. Mail the frog back?! My mom was at Shoney's once (no surprise we no longer have any of those restaurants around here), and after she bit into a strawberry she felt something in her mouth. She spit it out in her napkin and it was a worm. You know what the management said? To make it up to you, we'll only charge you half price for the meal. Ha! Like they ever went back there.

What an idiot telling her to mail? it back...how stupid people are. I'm glad she let it go. That's so funny though, poor little guy, I bet he was wondering where the heck am I? lol! There was one place I remember many, many years ago that sold really cheap food so I bought some bread. When I got home, I opened it up to make a sandwich and the bread was full of rat poop, ugh! It was actually cooked into the bread. Needless to say, I took it back, threw a fit, and never went there again. Makes me want to puke right now, haha.

My take on lettuce would be very different if I had opened that package. I wouldn't have been able to call anyone because I would have been cleaning my self after I SHAT my pants, lolololol. To much information? sorry dl

I have definitely encountered worms in salads, lettuces and some green chilies, but to find a frog? ...that's new! LOL.......makes me think twice the next time I buy groceries in supermarket. Must make sure I shake the packaging so that any frogs or worms will wake up..

I was watching something on Animal Planet the other night, weird things found in people's food. One of them was a vegetable dish with a snake head in it. The weird thing was that the vegetables were cooked but the snake head wasn't. Foul play... I don't think I've ever had a lovely experience like this myself though.

Maybe the customer was a pain in the azz and to get even the cook put that snake's head in the dish.

Wow, what a story. I think its great that she let the little frog go. I have never gotten a surprise like that in my packaged food, but I went to this Mexican restaurant once, and ate a burrito. When I got home that night, I brushed my teeth, and dislodged a rubber band!! I think it was in my food. That was weird and kind of gross.

No, no surprises in my food. I worked in a small grocery store a few years ago and did produce. The manager told me to watch for snakes, spiders and all kinds of bugs and to wear gloves. In all honesty, a frog could get into lettuce really easy and guess it did. I am proud the lady let the frog loose and let it go. It will survive no matter where they let it loose. that is an intersting story tho and good for the frog to be let loose.

I am glad she let it loose too. I hate to see animals die needlessly I am surprised that it lived so long in the packaged lettuce. You would think there wouldn't be a lot of air in the bag, they are made of plastic after all, so no air can go in or out. I would think the frog would have run out of air by the time the bag was shipped and delivered and sat on the grocery store shelf. Also, I am surpised no one at the grocery store noticed the bag was moving.

Most veggies make oxygen on their own, so the frog was lucky he made it that long. think about what went thru that poor frog's mind being stuck in a closed bag:) Bless his heart. Glad he's loose now. Guess i'm too liberal and should be upset with the fact a live frog was found in food. but, plants and animals go together and that frog was just the victim of circumstances !!

I bet the frog added to the weight of the produce. I know that products are sold by weight, so Kermit must've added some weight to the veggies.

I once got a green little worm in my salad while eating out. I tried to be discreet and signaled the waitress and silently pointed to the worm. So much for discreet...she screamed and got the attention of all the other patrons. I felt bad. It really wasn't the big deal that it was made to be. I did not want the worm but it indicated to me that it was naturally grown with not a lot of pesticides etc. If I gathered all the veges from my garden to make a salad, I am sure that it would be a possibility of little critters making there way to the table. I'd just remove them and rewash. My uncle owned a farm back in the day when farming was natural. You get used to these little annoyances.

Yes! I saw that too! I have heard of people finding things in their food and drinks. The ole fly in the soup thing. Oh, and we got my grandson some chocolate milk at a mexican restaurant and a fly flew into it and drowned. Ugh! One guy found a rat in a bottle of Coke once years ago. I can't think of any others except the one you just mentioned which I thought was kind of cute.
