How long can you focus on what you're doing?

Regardless the task at hand, how long can you focus on something? I have a very short focus time, I guess, it's because I can't seem to sit and do any work for the whole hour without the need for breaks, a little walking, or washroom break. Is this normal? or do I have an attention disorder (even at a minimum)? I can't help but just stand of stretch for a few moments before I would return back to what I'm doing. Anyhow, how long can you focus? or are you like me?

Depends what I am trying to focus on. If I am online, I am all over the place. If you could see my browser right now I have numerous tabs open. I go back and forth among different tasks. The only time I actually do focus for any long lengths of time is when I am watching a movie or reading. I can sit for hours with a good book, ignoring all around me. Some movies are a little hard to actually capture my full attention though. So if online, my focus lasts shortly. But if offline, depends what I am doing.

I know how you feel, I won't stay in one site alone, I'd have a minimum of 2 tabs in one setting.

It depends on what I am doing. Some things are easier to focus on than others and sometimes being preoccupied with something else makes it difficult to focus.

i too have a very short attention span on things like what i do online. i used to be able to more patient. but now it seems doing same things sometimes makes you tired or bored. you want something to do things a lot of different things to keep your interest.

I usually have no problem on focusing on what I am doing. As long as something holds my interest, it will keep my focus. If I become bored with something, then I will move on.

Hi laydee! I actually stop only until I finished my work. I am like that since before. I just cannot take to put off my things unless I am done with it. And to answer your question, if you have attention disorder... I don't think so. As long as you come back to finish your task, that is absolutely fine. If you are hungry, you better stop and eat for a while. It is hard to work with an empty stomach. That will affect your thinking and moves more slowly.

I suppose I could go for *about* an hour with boring things, if I really tried. Most likely, it would be less than that. It depends on what it is, really. School I can focus on for two or three hours, pretty much straight. Because the subjects are constantly changing. Writing, I can focus on for about the same amount of time, but only in rare cases. Usually it's about 30 minutes - 1 hour, but that's because I really enjoy writing. Reading I could do for quite some time, if the book interests me. Strangely, it's talking out loud that I can't seem to focus on.

Hello laydee. I can sit next to my office table as well as my laptop for a few hours when I am concentrated on my work. I think that it is good to some degree, but also some bad effect as we need to stand up to move around for the good of our health. I think that you are right to move around like stretching and doing something else for a break. Sometimes I remember to do this while sometimes not. Good day, friend.

I dont think you have an attention disorder ,I think I read it somewhere the normal attention for an adult is about forty five minutes .I have been known to focus for about the two hours without getting up because that is the nature of my job to sit and work at my computer and I have done it so many times without even realising .I must admit that doing this time I may not have gotten up but I usually listen to music so this may be considered a distraction.

It depends on what I'm focusing on. When I watch TV, I can focus on a long time, I can focus on a whole morning for a TV series, just sit here eat my snacks and watching, but if I do study staff, I can only focus on a moment, after a while I will go to the bathroom, or talking with others, or do a break. I think we can focus on what we are interested.

I can focus on what I am doing for a long period of time. After completing what I was doing then I will take a break us the bathroom and get something to drink and eat and then start up something new. I need to be busy all the time do not like to just sit around and do nothing.

I can focus on what i am doing up to the last minute that i finish it. I don't have attention problem... my problem is i am always looking for something to keep me busy something that i need to do... like i crochet while doing the laundry and while cooking. No idle time for--doing something while resting. Hyper. am i?

My attention span is short so, I can go for about an hour concentrating on one thing before I have to stop and take a break.

I guess I am like you after all :) I also can't seem to stick with what I am doing for a long span of time, maybe because I have always been like that since I was young. I tend to pause every now and then, and I find that convenient. I think there's really nothing wrong with that. It even makes me think more and do my task accurately. Even when I'm studying I prefer to take breaks. I learned in our subject Educational Psychology that it's called distributed practice. Haha. Take care! :)

Hi Laydee. I'm the kind of person who will not stand until I finished the job or work in hand. Since I'm on my elementary years, I had this kind of attitude wherein I will not let anyone or anything disturb my attention span. I've become used to this kind of attitude and I think I've gone a long way because of it.

Over the last couple of years, my focus has deteriorated. I am not sure what causes it, but i think it may have to do with too much multi-tasking......

If I do not have a lot of thigns going on around me, I can focus pretty well and stay focused until I am through with the task at hand. Now, if I have my kids, husband and/or the phone interrupting me, I cannot focus at all. I lose track of what I am doing, cannot concentrate at all, and end up leaving things unfinished or just putting them off until a later time. As to whether or not you have attention deficit disorder, I cannot say. You may just be one of those people who does better by taking frequent breaks and doing things in spurts. Have you ever tried figiting while you work to see if you can stay focused longer? Some people do better when they are figiting than they do when they attempt to sit still.

I can stop only until I have finished my work at hand. No matter what I am doing, if I want to pay all attention to this task or work, I can focus on it for more than hours even the whole day. Sometimes, in order to finish one task as soon as possible, I tend to spend all the time on it and do nothing else, even the meal time. You see, if people can focus on something, then they can work at a high efficiency. Perhaps you can take some measures to pay all attention to your work at hand, I think you can form a good habit later.

hello laydee If you'll ask me, as long as i love what im doing, i could focus on it for several hours. But if i'll do something im really not interested to do, maybe 30 mins to an hour only I think its normal to loose focus at certain tasks and taking a short break wouldn't harm. But check yourself if in ALL TASKS you feel the same, if not, you have to counter check yourself, is it because i really dont like it or just looking for an excuse so you'll wont do the task. Start practicing your focus on a task that you really like. It should be a good start. Good luck!
