Living off the system

Do you know anyone who lives off the system...There is nothing wrong with them, other then the fact they don't want to work and support there family? This makes me so mad. I have a family member that when he married my step daughter he had not worked for over 3 years. He claimed he couldn't...he had a 7% disability in his arm. I could have just fell over! She had 3 children from her first marriage and 1 child with him. She was working full time in a factory and handing all her pay to him. Then she lost her job and he acted like he was looking for work, but was really over at his friend using drugs. The father of her children died and now she receives Social Security for the children of the first marriage. And now they both live on that and Welfare. Neather one will work or even look for work. they sit on the computer all day and play on the different social sites. And he is trying to get Disability Started before the children all finish school. He only has a couple of years before that money ends. He says the Doctors help him to be a legal druggie. Now doesn't that sound real grown up. I guess what really makes me angree, is I have worked all my life to get ahead and I still can't even afford med. insurance to go to the Doctor or even to go to the dentist to get my teeth fixed. And here they are living off the system and able to see a doc. when they need to and have perfect teeth. Plenty of food in the cabnets and living just fine. All of the Tax Payer. Do they even understand, it's not the governments money they are cheating us out of....It's the Tax Payers. Something they don't have to pay. But there the first in line to get a Tax Refund check.. What do you think???

not personally but my hubby has lost his job and is on unemployment and i only work 3 mornings a week due to health issues and to this end, we qualify for free emergency dental. the place that we had to wait for this free dental work was in a food place where people that are on welfare can get free food. they can also get their perscriptions for a flat fee of $2 as well as free dental, plus free christmas presents, BUT because my hubby and i are struggling to make ends meet by NOT being on welfare (we own a house and a vehicle), the will not do anything to help us. i remarked to my hubby when we were in the waiting room, that most of these people are wealthier than we are!

I know a family who has 5 children. They are both young, barely 30. 2 of their boys have autism. Between those 2 children they recieve almost $2,000/month in disability. They have also lied to welfare and said they were "split up" and now she collects ALOT of food stamps, housing and utility assistance, and cash benefits along with a health amount of child support from her 1st husband. Her husband bought into a mechanics business "under the radar" and it now co-owner of a profitable garage. Which by the way, he is no mechanic, he just splits profits. No...they are not split up. They are living like royalty. All in all they pull in over $5,000 a month in cash and benefits. Neither of them work at all. Most hard working people I know don't make that much a month. Honestly, I can't wait for the day they get busted for fraud.

Wow, what a horrible story. All I can say is that at least on my judgement day, I will be comfortable facing God. For many it will be too late at that point.

unfortunately the story that you tell there's not really that uncommon but what they are doing is committing fraud. They can go to jail and be permanently cut off depending on which jurisdiction they are in.

There are a lot of ppl like that. I know a couple up North that has 3 kids and another on the way...they've gotten all kinds of stuff from the state and to a point still does but they have money to go play at the casino's and go to the mall and spend $700 on Christmas for the kids. I think if they had to work for their benefits they'd be a lot more thrifty with them. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**[/b]

When I had all my girls at home and was working full time I once asked for help with something...can't remember but it may have been fuel assistance. Whatever it really doesn't matter because I did not qualify because I earned too much even though at the time I was only making minimum wage and had all my children at home. They came right out and told me that I would be better off quitting my job and getting on welfare! I kid you not! They encourage people to be on the system.I was disgusted because I was raising all girls and I was trying to set an example for them....you have to work for a living and just because I found myself in the spot of being a single mom that does not mean that I get to sit home and collect. At a glance it may appear that they encourage people to work. They don't.

Hi there Tonnieko2,Not all people on Welfare are as you describe but more than enough are. I get angry when I see this too. I live in a housing complex that is for low income people. I am 53 with a 15 yr old and I work full time and have not missed a days work in years. I can't afford to. I don't qualify for any other help beyond the rental assistance and still my rent while lower than if I were not living here...still is 33% of my income. Not only that but my rent does go up with the cost of fuel etc even tho my income stays the same. Because of that, I'm very careful to keep my heat down. Heat is included in our rents but still we have to be conservative. The people that don't work crank their heat up and then open their windows! Their rent does not go up in the event of fuel hikes and yet they also get fuel assistance which they use towards their light bills because their heat is included in their rent. I do not qualify for fuel assistance because I earn too much. So yes, I do get mad when I see that sort of stuff. Still, remember that not all people on welfare are like that. Some of them really do need help and support.

Yes, this is very common in my area and they never seem to get busted, caught or anything. I have fibromyalgia, deteriorating disc in my back, I probably could try for disability but I am going to school for Medical Assisting, raising my son by myself and dealing with a jerk of a husband. My son gets SS for bad hearing, ADHD, behavioral issues, anger issues and learning disability. I have many of my family telling me that I am abusing the system also but I know I am not. My son has issues that I have to take him to appointments, meetings, and deal with the school, I am going to school should be done next December to get a better living for the both of us. I have been looking for a part-time job, that would be all I can handle because of labs and clinicals. It is not easy, I still have to find ways to pay the bills, get my son what he needs. And yes, people like these guys really make it harder for the ones that do need it. I feel what comes around will go around and their time will come. be patient.

I do understand, and I know that this system is flawed. Welfare was designed to help people get back up, so they can find a job of their own. It has helped a lot of people, but some people just get on it and never get off. They are living on welfare money, and as you've said this money comes from our taxes. In my opinion. the government should really look into this and see who is actually living on welfare, and see who actually needs it but will stop using it after a while. If people are not willing to do any work at all, why give them money? These people have to know that they need to do their own work. The rest of the world can have a job, so there's no reason why these people do not even try.

Unfortunately there are people like that that work the system. Hopefully that is the exception. Unfortunately the the rules that try to weed out these kind of people also weed out a lot of people that are legitimately in need.

I know a few and I think it's a very irresponsible way to live. They are living off of the hard earned money of tax payers. While others toil, they just sit around and wait for their monthly support from the government. I think the system has to change. People like to easily claim disability so they can get money without doing a thing. It's not fair to those who work their bum off to make ends meet.
