Yes they are but my favorite are the mutts. I just hope the child is taught how to propery care for a pup, I hate when parents allow their kids to abuse a pup

If parents teach their children the proper way to care for puppies then the puppy they decide on will become that childs best friend regardless of breed or mixes.

If you don't want a dog that sheds then never get a siberian husky. Twice a year they blow their coat and it is horrible. I have had a beagle before but he was so high strung I considered having him put on ritalin! I best dog I have experienced has been an astralian shepard.

Yes, GSDs are fantastic babysitters, when raised with children they will always protect them.

My all time favorite and best recommendation is the labrador retriever. They have great temperments with kids and are good protectors. Such kind animals and smart too. You can't go wrong with this breed. Most will retrieve and like to swim too. We only had one lab that wasn't particularly smart, but overall they're wonderful dogs. Even she was sweet, just not all that bright! If you don't mind a larger dog, you should check them out. ;)

It really depends what size of a dog you want. I have two Labradors. When buying a puppy Labrador, it is important to remember they are not going to stay a small puppy. In six short months, they will be quite a larger. Plan for it.

Anyone looking to get a dog should at least read up on them if they've never had one before.

Golden Retrievers are really good dogs for kids. My brother has one and has 2 kids under the age of 6 and the dog is really good with them. Even when they are bouncing on him and pulling his tail etc... He'll just get up and lick them and walk away

Irresponsible parents should not get a dog for their kids.

If you want a small dog that sheds little..I would go with a beagal. Most small dogs are yappers (the bark a lot) hyper and they bite. The best family dog is hands down a golden retriever..but they need lots of space!

I've only met one collie and she was already 12 years old so I really didn't get a chance to actually get to know her.

I don't know what you should get, I am simply going to let you know a dog not to get, Austalian Sheppards or Queenzland Healers (sp?) terrible dogs, they have a bad tendancy to bite and attack without notice, we have had a couple (my mom thinks they are pretyy, pretty ugly if you ask me) and they have bit up family and friends badly

Those are working dogs mostly for herding sheep, probably should have been professionally trained. Some breeds should not be available to the general public.

HELLO, I AM AN ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER, AND I AGREE THAT SHELTER DOGS DO NEED HOMES VERY BADLY, I GO TO SCHOOLS AND TALK TO THE CHILDREN ABOUT RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP, THE KIND OF DOG THAT I TAKE IS THE GOLDEN RETREIVER, IT IS THE ONLY DOG THAT I CAN TRUST AROUND A BUNCH OF KIDS. I GUESS IT IS WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IN A DOG, A GUARD DOG,? GO WITH THE GERMAN SHEPARD, A KIDS DOG,? GO WITH THE GOLDEN RETREIVER, MOST SHELTERS WILL LET YOU TAKE OUT THE DOG AND PLAY WITH IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT, BRING SOME KIDS, INTERACT WITH THE DOG, DO SOME RESEARCH, ASK QUESTIONS, GO ON THE INTERNET AND READ UP ON THE KIND OF DOG YOU ARE INTERESTED IN. GOOD LUCK...

All too often the kids are abusive towards dogs, that is not a good match for the GR.

Whatever the breed, don't buy: adopt. There are tons of dogs even puppies craving for a shelter. Do the right thing and go to a kennel. Retriever Labrador is a very friendly breed.

Golden Retrievers are awesome dogs, beautiful, very eager to please and great with kids, but since you want a small dog, my suggestion is a Bichon Frise. I use to have one and I highly reccomend them. They are extremely affectionate and extremely good with children. They are not yappers, but they are good watch dogs. They don't shed much and they are great for people that suffer with allergies. They don't need to be exercised much, but they do need to be groomed reguraly. The only downside about this breed, like most small breeds, is that they can be difficult to house train, crate training is reccommended for best results. They are as cute as can be and will definitely make a good family pet.

If you are looking for a small dog Chinese pugs are great, I have one and he is great with children. He loves to play and he was very easy to house train. If you are looking for a big dog, than labs are great with kids.
