As luck would have it Cal Edison decided that yesterday eve and this fri the thirteenth morning would be ideal to shut down Gold Crest's electricity from ten p,m. the twelfth to 2 am this morning thus throwing my computer off the internet. My son gave me a step by step instruction as how to reset my computer over my protests that there were too many wires, and oh I cannot do that.He said, well maybe you won't have to.it might not upset the cable. so i got up this morning, all cheery, turned on the computer and tried to get on the internet. right.I had been thrown off. so with palms sweating, my fingers trembling I pulled out the skinny black wire then replugged it on the monitor, then waited one minute, pulled out the skinny black wire on the router, then replugged it. then I did turn on the computer, and wonder of wonders,it worked, I was back on the internet and I did it myself.old technophobe me. So my question to you all, is there something you did not think you could do,but you surprised yourself and did it,and it turned out perfectly?

Oh Hatley, I can so relate to this. That feeling of pleasure when we accomplish something ...it's such an "I'm alive and I'm soooo good" feeling. So today, I desperately needed my printer. I've been scammed while looking at buying something on the net. My bank has been in touch and are not being helpful. I needed to write them a letter. Did that, then went to print it...no ink in printer. Finally managed to send it to a flash drive and went to my friends to print it. Thought of something else to say but knew I couldn't print it so I wrote it out. Wanted a copy so I tried to scan it...it scanned as a JPEG file, which is a picture. It would not scan as a document. I tried to attach it to an email to myself, which is what I used my printer for last time I used it.....nope. It's beaten me. I take one step forward then six steps back.

hi mstickle and mylotters, yes it f eel so good to be able to do some things on the computer. I learned how to put in only the cookies for sites I use on firefox and that felt good so when I followed my son's directions to reset my computer it really did work. the german lady talked in germlish so it came out you blah blah plug and replug blah blah. saywhat. so my son showed me exactly which ones to unplug and plug back in.

Oh Hatley, you make me laugh, you're too funny. Germlish... To trruk1, thanks hon but I hadn't changed any settings so I don't know why it would do what it did. I've scanned several docs into my doc folder, copied things as well as printing them, just by pushing apt buttons...why it sent it to my picture folder I don't know. If I try to fix it I know I will only stuff things up more than I already have. My number 1 daughter is coming to visit briefly to help me with a few things so she will have lots to do.

Ugh, Hatley. We are definitely in an era where we're over-wired, if you ask me! It can be so confusing. I always hang onto manuals, and over the years, I have learned much more about which wires go where lol. Karen

I always found it such a rush to drive somewhere by myself and arrive safely. I also like it when my son, like yours gives me instructions to do some electronic thing and I can actually accomplish it by myself.

hi gardengerty it seems our sons are much more explicit in their directions than that odd german lady who said blah blah the wire then replug and blah bladfh the other and re blah blah. that was what I heard. So I followed my sons instructions to the tee and it really did work. I did it myself. whoopee.

That's so GREAT! I'm not exactly unable to do much with the computer, but it does seem that 90% of the time, when something goes wrong, I haven't a clue how to fix it the first time. I'm glad your son showed you JUST in time to do it. doing something helps me remember how to do it again, so maybe you will now remember how to fix it next time!

that means I only know how to fix it 10% of the time if I haven't run into it before now, if I have run into it before, the percentile goes up considerably...

hi fellow mylotters if I can do something hands on I will more likely be able to do that again, but if my son starts in throwing electronic terms at me, I get really lost. so now if the internet does not load I do know how to remedy that.

When I first got my computer I had my son set it up because there were so many wires. I move it to another room and had to disconnect lots of the wires but when I hooked them back up it did work and I could still get on my internet. I was so proud of myself so I know what you are feeling.

Well done Hatley that is great All I would have to do is reboot the Router as I am wireless but yes I would have been able to sort it either way, as you know I am quite clever when it comes to the Computer lol, even if I say so myself, it might take a while to get it back to how I want it but I get there I am so glad that you managed to sort it though

hi gabs yes my son gave me clear directions unlike timewarner cable lady who had a gutteral german accent and all I got from her was unplug blah blha and replug then unplug blah blah, which was about as clear as mud. but my son showed me which wire to unplug on both the monitor and the router. If I can ever afford to update my 2000 windows to 7 it would make my computer run much faster as I am already on cable which is supposed to be faster than dsl.

Good job, Hat! Yeah, I hear you on being technically challenged. You're not alone. Congratulations on doing it successfully.

thanks joyceshookery yes my son told me exactly which one to unplug and plug back in, time warner woman did not, and there were three on monitor and on the router, and I was afraid I would unplug the wrong ones. so my son made it clear and it was really easy to do.

hi tamarafireheart I am not sure why Cal Edison decided to do that on friday the 13th but it pretty frustrating as anyone on cable had to reset their computers and I imagine their televisions also. It was a really good feeling because my son gave me clear directions, before the woman on time warner cable just told me to unplug and replug the monitor and the router, she did not tell me which wire I was suppose to unplug so I asked them to send a repairman it took him ten minutes flat, and he said the same thing, but my son told me exactly which wire to unplug and plug back in, the others did not bother. so now I know and if need be can do it again. lol

Hi Hatley, well done there, these wires are a nasty one. I just have one the plug which goes into the wall that I pull out and plug back in again when the modem goes off, frequently. Last weekend, not being in the mood to drag a man round and having watched them fix the toilet flush on countless occassions over the years I decided to try and fix it myself with my sons help. I couldn't believe that the flush mechanism actually started to work again. However since then the water has been running endlessly into the toilet and I'm not sticking the hand into the cistern to possibly do more damage. I'm off in a few moments and will simply disconnect the water.

hi thea oh my toilets, I can sometimes stop the running but like you said it involves sticking your hand into the water which feels and is awfully yucky. It seems like in almost every apartment we have rented there is always something wrong with the blasted toilets. You would think the managers would see to it that the toilets work before renting the apartments. grrrrrr

Well done Hatley! I nearly gave my father a heart attack when I told him I was planning to fit my own kitchen. I think he expected me to mess it up, because it was a pretty big undertaking. But I did it! Single handed! And it included knocking down a big, ugly built in larder in the corner of my kitchen, and plumbing in a new sink unit. So yeah, I tend to go for it with these kinds of things! Lol! Now, I've got two strapping big brothers, but if my dad needs a hand with the DIY, it's me who helps! Lol! And I'm only a wee woman!

hi louc74 yes we women can really do more than we think we can when push comes to shove, and some women are just into DIY. also my son had shown me which wires on both the monitor and router had to be unplugged and then plugged into again.
