When you were small, did your parents or siblings tell bed time stories to you? Did you have interest in that? Did you tell stories to your kids or siblings? What sort of stories were they?

Hi Buchi, when I was a little girl, I like hearing stories from my parents. They liked telling those stories which were really interesting. Besides enjoying listening these attractive old popular Chinese legends we did learn lots of valuable moral lessons through them. My mom liked telling jesting stories. She felt so delighted when seeing us burst into laughter after listening to the famous Chinese stories with joke I borrowed that story book from the school library and read it myself during my senior elementary school. The stories teach us what we are supposed to do or don’t depending on different situations. They are still lots of valuable moral lessons to learn from the funny stories. As far as I know it is a book written in Chinese only. I recommend you to read it if you understand mandarin. I bet people around you will hear your laughter every now and then while you are reading Happy posting

Please don’t tease me my dear! However, thanks for the compliment! Your words make me blush . Mandarin is the official language of Chinese. Yeah, we write in Chinese and speak in Mandarin. After surfing for a while I still haven’t come across the said story book in English version yet. Hopefully it is available in somewhere around. I will keep on surfing during my leisure. I will send you the info related to the book for sure if I see any later on

I really mean what I mean. You write in detail all the information. If you can write the name of the book and writer, I will search in my city book stalls and also I will search in internet. Is there any difference between Chinese language and Mandarine language? Do not mistake me please. In an academic interest, I am asking this. I want to know things.

Hello Great Writer, the way you have written, I feel like reading the book right now. But lo I do not know chinese language. What is mandarin? Is it a language? See after durian and rambutan, now another word I am learning from you, mandarin. Well does it have English translation? If so can you send the name and writer of that book. I will try to get it here.

Those days elders were always telling stories about king, queen, village, tree, treasure etc. But now children are seeing cartoons and read comics, so they like fairytales only. Hope you have good collection of fairytales.

My parents never told me bedtime stories that I know of. I never read any to my daughter either. She just was not interested in them or reading. I wasn't either. I never liked to read. The only stories I ever heard was when my parents were growing up.

Hi Buchi, Yes I had chances to listen stories not from my parents but from my grandfather. He used to tell stories when he got a topic for discussion and he is explaining the same by telling a story from ‘Mahabharath’ or ‘Ramayan’. He explained his own experiences, about his childhood and how hard he worked to earn money etc. I do tell stories to my kids, not everyday but occasionally. I think we are missing the advantage of joint family system where grandparents were there to narrating interesting stories.

Very true. Joint family system was very good and advantageous. Somehow it is fading away. How nice to have grand parents, aunts and uncles, many cousins in the same house, everything is vanishing.

Even I like that song, Varahala ..... song. Sing the song, Oh papa lali, janmake lali, padanaa hayiga, probably in the movie Geethanjali. My son was singing that in the stage. I was singing padutha theeyaga, challaga from mooga manasulu, chandamama rave, jabilli rave. My son as a child, always wanted me to sing Godari gattundi. But only the first few lines I had to sing. It was like a repaired gramphone record. But stories I told a lot to my children. Sometimes real incident like going to chennai, from Auto to station announcement etc. were told to make them sleep.

Hey, when i was little, my siblings use to tell me fantasy stories to put me to bed. They also tell me stories about their past life, how they were when they were little, how they get into troubles and get away with it. Those kind of stuff, fun and exciting!

Hi, buchi No one told me fairy tale stories nor urban legends when I was a kid. I came to know about Snow White and Cinderella while watching TV. That was ok, though, I was a voracious reader during my teenage years and so I think I was able to catch up. Have a nice day!

Happy to note that you are a voracious reader. In my house all are voracious readers and we give mostly books as gifts for birthday or wedding anniversary to each other. Then you must have read all the leading stories like snow white etc. Now you can tell varieties of stories to other kids.

Yes. I will tell my children stories at bed time to make him sleep quickly. They enjoy it. Mostly it is about animals and some times regarding any action oriented stories. I don't remember if my parents or siblings told me any stories when i was small.

You and your nieces must be too courageous to hear a ghost story before sleeping. My daughter, if sees in TV or hears or reads any ghost story, does not sleep in her room. She will come to my room. To be frank enough, I am also afraid of ghost story.
