Vandals

I live half a block from a commercial area, what would be called the main drag in a small town, although I live in a city. It's a nice little neighborhood and the local Business Improvement Association tries hard to keep it that way. One thing they do is put out planters all along the street, flowers in summer and Christmas trees and greenery in the winter. Looks nice. Unfortunately, there's a group of malcontents in the area who are determined to cover everything with graffiti or etch the windows of the stores. This past weekend, someone(s) pulled all the trees out of the planters, up one side of the street and down the other. Now, we do have some police cameras on the street, but the street crew came by and repotted everything, so when I asked Officer Diego about it, he was unaware of it. But he said he would check into it. What gets into these kids?

I know kids do all sorts of things like this. They always have & always will. What I find amazing is that they can do an awful lot of damage right out in public. It has to take some time. Now where are the cops when all this is being done....or other people. How is it that they can do all this damage and still not be seen. If they do it in the middle of the night....still there is traffic....cops. Also where are the parents?

Where are the parents, indeed.

A youth out at 3 a.m. is usually up to no good. Apparently curfews work for youth but it seems unpopular. Where are the parents indeed. Some parents are too busy trying to be friends with their children instead of parents. The children have plenty of friends and only one or two active parents usually. Admittedly some parents are just incompetent and other just too liberal applying no correction.

Somewhere along the way it became my fault. Apparently I do not entertain the local youth enough so the retaliate by vandalizing things I enjoy. I have not built enough skateboard parks and youth drop in centers, so they are forced to spray paint buildings and get pregnant to pass the time. I have a suggestion, if they want something to do why don't they spend the time raising money and building the skateboard park, arranging to staff a drop in center themselves and using all that energy for something positive. I am getting old and tired and have spent half my income already on taxes this year, and the rest I need to live on. I don't know why they are angry at me, I am just trying to look after myself and survive.

No, dear, it's not your fault, unless you've raised delinquents... As an aside, there is a large, well-used skateboard park right next to Police Station 30, here in Hamilton. (There are others, too.)

Our Town, stupidly, put a median down the middle of our main street. Everyone is complaining because now there is no way for emergency vehicles to get by because there is parking on both sides of the road and two lanes for traffice (one in each direction). One of the things they put on this median is a fountain with a water wheel. It is only operating in the summer months but as soon as that sucker got started the first year, someone put soap in the water. You can imagine what a mess that was.

Someone puts soap in the fountain in downtown Guelph at least once a year... I don't think anyone's done it in Hamilton, but I could be wrong.

I think alot of them get bored with themselves. alot like to get attention and try make that extra point to get higher known than the other. These are not matue people to do things like this and they usually grow out of it or get hurt in the long run. They need a leader , a higher up to have a program more for these people to be involved. They always want money for programs anymore and some of them just do not have the money to go to or join or play games. Everything cost, there should be something free for others to go to. an enjoyment place where maybe they all could earn for a reward to do something right. but for everyone not just for those who are lets say higher up with loads selfishness. if one sees what is right they might get what is right..hint rich or poor open or suggest a place to someone if you can for kids , adults, to share ideas and places to be enjoyed by all..jut maybe they will be more involved in knowing they all fit in. I know everywhere is crime and some more than others but I also know alot of kids that feel neglect and have nothing and want revenge on those that do, I guess called jealious in a way .

Thanks for your "golden" response. You raise some valid points.
